December 2011 Surgeries - want to wait together?
Comments

Tina- glad you are home and sending positive healing energy your way. Hope the results are all great!
-
Patty and others, I also set up a site through Caringbridge and have found it helpful. I'm a writer/editor by trade, so I guess it's in my nature.
I had an SNB yesterday and thankfully they checked the frozen section and the little buggers were clear. My tumor, though very small, about 1 cm, was very deep - close to my chest wall, so it was tough for them to get to do the wire localization...ouch!!
I get my pathology report on Thursday. I thought I was in the clear with the no nodes affected, but now I'm starting to get very nervous. Am I being a worrywart??
-
I wanted to report that I heard from AussieKate this morning and everything went great, but I'll let her give the particulars.
i'm reading so much good news here!
-
That was what my BS told me as well...SN only and no frozen section. I had my wire inserted before my stereotactic biopsy, so it is already in there, unless they are doing another one. I hope not! I told BS to take as much as he needed to get the clear margins...don't care if my breast has a dent in it.
This has been going on since Sept for me, so I am anxious to get it over with. I've been to more dr. app'ts in three months than I've been to in the last ten years!
-
Kaara, have you gals been keeping up with the study out of San Antonio conforence about 75% of DCIS patients being able to not do rads? I think , since I had lumpectomy before Thanksgiving my doctors may not want me to wait as long as it would take to get a test back. Ya'll might benefit from looking into it. I would want the doctor to explain the numbers to me though. The per centages are greek to me cause there are so many different ways of looking at them.Most people think it will probably be a valuable tool to see which person with DCIS has a good chance of never having a recurrance of DCIS or invasive cancer.I seems to be another step forward.Dr. Susan Love seems empressed with it and she doesn't accept just any study or trial. Good luck. Mon. Kaara with your lumpectomy. I hope this is definitive enough and gets it all and you will be ready to do what you will do. bGood luck to all.

Hi all.... I'm baaack.
Surgery went well. Pretty long and I have been pretty tired and sore since, but not unmanageable. Great news is that the SNB didn't show any invasion, but we will have to wait for the definate confimation of that from the laboratory tests. But fingers crossed and I'm feeling positive. I can't believe my new breasts, they are so small and perky, and I have sensation in the nipples for the first time in my life. My breasts were so large and pendulous that BS said that the nerve was probably stretched and so having feeling in my nipples was non existant. Imagine my surprise to actually 'feel' pleasant tingles
I wasn't expecting that at all.
I hope everyone who has had surgery is doing well and my thoughts are with those about to have theirs this week. TTFN, Kate
-
Woohoo Aussie Kate- cancer is out and sensation too? FABULOUS!!!
-
Kate: Great news! Glad you like your new breasts! My dr. asked me if I wanted to have mine augmented while I was in for the lumpectomy, because insurance would pay. My answer was...at 71 years old....NO WAY! I can understand why younger women would do it, but my old boobs will be just fine for me...I don't plan on entering any topless contests any time soon:)
-
Welcome home, AussieKate! So glad you've had such a rapid improvement!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brilliant thoughts yesterday:
1. Just because I am home from BC surgery, that doesn't mean I can skip my regular meds while taking the pain pills and antibiotics! Duh.
2. Just because someone brings a meal to my home doesn't mean I have to eat it! Duh.
I found myself doubling up on the Norco I brought home from the hospital. I had a lot of break-through pain, so I thought taking the maximum amount would be a good thing. Not necessarily so!
I had the dreaded narcotic constipation and by Friday, took my first Milk of Magnesia. Yesterday I took another one. Last night I was feeling really nauseated, and took a Phenergan. Today, let's just say that constipation is no longer a problem.
Before I had my BMX/recon, I'd made a list of the foods I wanted to have handy. Small, snacky things, like little containers of fruit cocktail, jello, tapioca, yogurt, crackers, etc.
That was before I realized what a huge church family we have, and that we would be inundated with tons of food - and not neccessarily healthy stuff. A lot of it has been rich, fatty, and not what we usually eat around here. Instead of my little healthy stuff, I've eaten whatever friends have delivered. Yesterday, we got all the leftovers from a Christmas party I couldn't attend! It was a sweet thought, but.....ugh.
So back to basics - get back on the probiotics I usually take every day, and the fewer additional prescriptions the better.....(still have 5 days to go on the antibiotics)
AND - more healthy eating. Fresh fruits and veggies, and sincere thanks to all who bring food. Rather than dictate to them what to bring, we just freeze it in smaller amounts to eat later, and send the rest over to my 90 year old father in law, who adores it.
So much good news! Spend your energy healing now until you hear the results. I know easier said than done.
I did want to state that on the CaringBridge journals you only send the link to those you want to read it. They get a signon and password and are e-mailed any time you post anything. They can also write messages back to you. I still have mine open. I've had a few other things going on that I still report on periodically. Almost done now.
Anyway, hugs to all. Glad to hear this weeks surgeries have been going well. You may be sore now, but the nasty thing is not in your body any more. I know the relief I felt after my surgeries after having known about the tumor for almost three months by the time it was taken out.
Nausea anyone? Had my Surgery on Thursday and have been having waves of nausea the last day or so - could it be from the nuclear meds or is this normal? I've had plenty of surgeries and this is the first time I'm having nausea and having a hard time bouncing back. I'm usually up and going a day or two after surgery but this time I'm just exhausted. Pain not to bad - mostly burning sensation, but so freakin' tired.
-
Home form Surgey doing well. Doc told me that he is pretty sure the lymph nodes are negative. waiting on the final official report. I will know more this friday. Im very sore but doing really good. My DH and My wonderful mother in-law have been amazing. Good luck to the upcoming surgeries. It was not as bad as I thought it was going to me.
hey hey hey! day 4 post op. the first night was rough. i pushed that button all night long. 2nd night got bad, had to have a morphine shot. my night nurse 'didn't want to wake me' for my scheduled pain pills so she let me sleep...i woke up crying & screaming...another shot. then, some jackwagon took my blood pressure in my arm - big sign on my door says not to, & i was out of it so i didnt know either, but my arm has not felt right since. it hurts & sometimes my fingers will tingle & go numb. they sent me home with percocet, antibiotics, stool softener, & dilaudid for breakaway pain. i took 1 of those, knocked me out for an hour & when i woke up i was shaking uncontrollably & hallucinating. DO NOT WANT!!!!! that was scary. will NOT take that again. i was a little upset when they took the bandages off to look. -had to cut me across the top instead of under. no biggie though. i had no idea what to expect, but all in all, i am pretty surprised @ how things went. not as bad as i thought. i hope everyone else is doing ok & good luck to those who are still waiting - Toni
Hi Cookie Monster-would like to be added to your group since I could use the support. Had a BMX with immediate implants and a single node biopsy on Dec 1st, 2011.....only my right breast had DCIS but I had the left breast removed with a nipple sparing procedure after much consideration. Gave up my nipple on the right breast since my surgeon thought it was questionable. God bless you and all the women on this site who are experiencing some of these very difficult choices and treatments.
Hi Toni- I am on day 11 and, also, surprised that I have not had more pain. I had a BMX, with immediate implants, and had nipple sparing on the left side, and the nipple removed on my right breast. I was cut under the breast on the left and my incision on the right is across the nipple area with each incisions 3 or 4 inches. I have peeked a little but can not bear to look, at this point. I will do all the reconstruction, possible, and am encouraged that some of the reconstructions look good. Sorry for your hospital experience. I was lucky that my husband stayed with me in the hospital, overnight, after reading some posts on this website, and he managed some of those issues. My biggest issues have been emotional, asked for Valium as my plan B for bad days, and difficulty sleeping and with drain leakage. Wishing you, and all others, a swift recovery.
KAYCE234: I had my wide local excision last Friday and have also been feeling low grade nausea ever since, as well as having a headache (on the same side of my head as the surgery) every day since as well.
I've got no idea why as I too have had previous surgeries for other things without this nausea following...
Jenn -
Jildlove Larke - I, too, 'lost' my right nipple and it is difficult to look, but daily I do to put cream on a discolored spot. Also going for nipple recon. at a later date.
I also had to remind nurses to take bp in my left arm only. Able to sleep with little pain a this point. Appointment tomorrow with BS to get final results.
Kayce234 - sorry you're having problems with nausea. I always do with anesthesia and with codeine or morphine. Last surgery though, they gave me a scopalamine patch. Looked like a little round bandaid and it goes behind your ear. Worked fantastic and the effects last for a couple of days. You might call your doc and ask for RX if your nausea continues. Hope you feel better soon.
-
I had my first bout of nausea a few nights ago, and attributed it to a combination of meds (narco and antibiotics), Milk of Magnesia that took a long time to work, then worked overtime, too much rich fatty food delivered by caring friends, and not enough healthy stuff like fresh fruit and yogurt.
I did finally take a Phenergan, and afterwards, kind of wished I hadn't. In the hospital I got Zofran, which gave me no side effects at all. The Phenergan, though, gave me muscle twitches and spasms, apparently a common side effect.
I'm eating better and doing better with nausea. Now if I could just get this pain under control!
Good luck Dru! I had my lumpectomy and SNB on Friday, 12/9. No problems at all. It was a long day, but not too bad. Right now the worst is waiting for Thursday's pathology report. You'll do great! Just focus on the fact that the nasty thing is being removed!
Good luck tomorrow Kelly!
Thinking good thoughts for Kelly (spunkyboobster) as she goes into surgery tomorrow - Dec. 13th
Prayers for a successful procedure and a smooth recovery!!!!
-
Official welcome to you Druanne although you were already here anyway! (and welcome to be)
Also welcome to Larke - this wonderful group of ladies are here to support you as you heal up and move forward with treatment and life.
We (DH, DS, and I) spent the day at Disneyland & California Adventure - it was rainy and cold, which kept the crowds away, so it was wonderful. Our waits were quite short and we all had a good time.
I'll post the weekly surgery list in a few, I'm sorry I forgot to do it last night. My best to all of this week's ladies, I'm in that group too.
I gotta give this one recognition...I was ordering shoes and slippers from Zappos online last week (i never wear slippers, but figured I needed them for the hospital). I mentioned this to the nice guy on the other end of the telephone; the shoes came last week and today the local flower shop delivered a bouquet of beautiful flowers!! From Zappos!! Made my day.
Hello everyone - have been MIA on the site for awhile. I have my reconstruction on December 22. Nervous and excited all at the same time - seems to be my frame of mind everytime I get to one more milestone in this dreaded disease. It's so great to see some of the posts on this site. Really helps to put my mind at ease. I hate these expanders - I am constantly aware of them. I am a side sleeper and I often wake up with discomfort after a cold night of sleep (in between hotflashes that is). I have not explored too many of the options, was happy to hear I did not have enough tummy for two c cups - nicest thing anyone has ever said to me, but would have really enjoyed the tummy tuck bonus. I am hoping with this behind me, that I can somehow move on. It's hard to move on and participate in conversations as the last 13 months I have been living and breathing and more imporatantly beating cancer. Not much to else to talk about - hoping getting back to work, skiing and social activiies changes that. I want to not be all about cancer anymore!
