    Hello ladies,

I would like to join the December Rads group.  I will have my first treatment on December 14th.  Feeling a little nervous about the whole thing but hopefully it will go by fast and without issues.  I will be getting 30 treatments.

Anyone else is having treatments at MDAnderson?

Hi Kennylynne, My Onc told me that I cannot start Tamoxifen until I am done with Rads, explanation was not very clear, something to do with imflamation that rad cause...

I'm having 33 treatments, 12 more to go. Use the Aquaphor from day 1.  It should help minimalize the uncomfortable side-effects on your skin. The actual treatments are nothing, but the longer you go, the redder (and more irritated) your chest gets. It's not awful, and didn't bother me at all for the first 10 or so treatments. I am more tired, but I live in Cleveland, so there's less sunlight here this time of year.  And everyone reacts differently.  The technicians are great and don't make me feel self-conscious at all.  Good luck!

I was very confused during my simulation yesterday when the nurse told me NOT to use any lotions, oils, creams etc.  I see a lot of posts on Rads topics about other women using moisturizers but the nurse instructed me not to use anything until I get to the point when doctor will prescribe something if I develop some kind of skin problem.  My gut would tell me to moisturize like crazy after Rad treatments.  I need to ask the doctor, this does not make sense to me.

Welcome kbkea!  Like everything else, there seems to be different instructions coming from different centers.  I'm getting treatment at Dana Farber and I was given a list of moisturizers to use.  And I was told that since I am getting treatment in the evening, I could use my regular antiperspirant.  My gut says what your gut is telling you, that moisturizing will help prevent or delay problems later.  Talk to your doctor, that is the best approach.

Well I'm still playing the waiting game. I had expected to be starting rads next week but so far, no appointment schedule. I have an appt with my MO on Monday so I'll pop by the radiation area while I'm there to see what's going on!  I really want to get this show on the road!

I guess every facility is different.  My facility gave me samples of cream to use.  The said to start at the very beginning.  they weren't sure if it helps, but they have everyone use cream from the first day.  BUT.  Never put any cream on within 4 hours of having radiation.  For me, I took a shower in the morning (using dove, for sensitive skin), never used deodorant, had radiation around 10am, went home and waited about an hour and creamed a couple times between when I got home and went to bed.  I used Udderly smooth during the day (its not to greasy) and aquafor at night (it's thick and yucky - I would put it on and have an old undershirt that I could through in the wash the next morning).

I have very dry skin normally, so I don't know if that has anything to do with anything.  I am a red head, fair skin, blue eye, Irish family history.  I got pink, and near the end dark pink.  I never peeled or blistered.

I also never wore a bra.

Also,  I have to say, I had a lumpectomy.  Not sure what radiation is like if someone has a MX.

Everyone is different.  Hope this helps.

    Good Luck.

Well I'm gonna jump on in and join you ladies...finished up my chemo TCx4 on Nov 17th, had my SIM appt today for the rads and got tatooed, next Friday is my set up appt(?) and then Monday, the 19th is my first rad treatment. The only problem I have (so far) is that my radiation place is only open from 8-4...does that seem a bit ridiculous to anyone else? I'm just getting back to work after chemo and now I have to ask to leave early every day for 6 weeks so I can get there by 4! It just seems like the worst hours ever for anyone who works. I hate to bitch, I know I need this treatment, but jeez I'm sick of this.

Michelle, read about the Symposium and thought of you.  You have every right to be mad!!!!

I had my simulation today.  It was quick - no more than about 20 minutes.  After MUCH debate about whether I could forego tattoos, I broke down and now have three tiny spots.  Hoping they are so small that my BF (who hates 'em) can't see.  Found myself getting a bit emotional too, but not too bad.

Dry run is on 12/20 and tx starts the next day.  RO said today I will have 25 tx and 5 boosts, and the boosts will have a higher dosage because of close margins despite second excision.  66 Gys total.  I hope to be done by Feb 1st or so!!

p.s. Jerseylicious - my center has hours like 7:30-4:00.  I begged them for appts that minimize the impact to work, but I will also need to take time off.  Not how I wanted to use it!

Got a call from the hospital this afternoon and my first rad tx is on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. Glad to get this next chapter underway! I should be done by end of January!

Hi Everyone - Wanted to join the group since I have been feeling alone going through this. I just finished 10 of 30 rads - the last week will be concentrated boosts. Yesterday I woke-up feeling totally depleated and feeling very down. Seemed too early in treatment to be fatigued and I worried that if this is going to get worse it will be awful. But today they told me most likely the fatigue was not the rads and I did feel better today. The good news is treatment is very close to home and work (I actually can walk over from work - about a 5 min. walk).

As someone here said earlier, although treatments themselves are short, it is a very lonely feeling being in that room alone being zapped. I have really been feeling that too. What makes it worse for me is they pipe-in Christmas carols which just feel so removed from how I am feeling these days.

Had my planning session today, 2 tiny tattoos, and I start on the 20th. Michelle, what list of moisturizers did they give you? They told me I could use anything as soon as I am done, but heard that greasy moisturizers are not good to use. It would seem to me that slathering it on at bedtime would help a lot. I also read that pure aloe is best. I think I may use the aloe immediately following treatment and then something thick at bedtime.

Welcome to all who have joined today!

    Hi all, and welcome, Carol!

It amazes me how different the information is depending on where we are getting treatment.  My RO is fine with me moisturizing immediately after treatment. TXs are at 8:15am.  So right after, I get to apply my regular anti-perspirant/deodorant and my Say Yes to Carrots moisturizer (Walgreens brand).  They said it was okay because I would have the deodorant on all day, and then shower before tx so it should all be gone by then.

I have 3 tatts. One on each rib cage, and one right on the sternum midline. Small dots, I can't even find them anymore.

Lola, I'm in Cleveland too.  Docs are all at Cleve Clinic but I get my rads at Parma Hospital cuz a Clinic doc is the RO there...if it were summer I could walk over from work!

Sorry, got distracted for a sec, two gorgeous deer in backyard!

I do notice that after 9 tx's I was tired yesterday.  Took a little 20 minute snooze when I got home from work.  Different from the overwhelming chemo fatigue that I couldn't sleep away...just a normal "I'm sleepy" kind of tired, which is a welcome relief.  I don't want to ever experience that chemo fatigue again, it kicked my butt!

Enjoy the weekend break and apply that moisturizer!  HUGS

Rose - my list of moisturizers included Moisturel cream (which I am using - it's not too greasy), Aquaphor, Cetaphil, Lubriderm, Eucerin or 100% aloe vera lotions.  My instructions say to use them only after treatment.  But because I have treatment in the early evening, I was told I could use mine in the morning and I could use my regular antiperspirant as long as it's applied 6 hours before treatment.  I'm applying just twice a day because so far I'm not having any skin issues.  My instructions say that the lotions won't prevent skin issues but will keep me more comfortable.  I do tan easily and have a bit of "leftover" color from our trip to Florida in October.  Hopefully that will make a difference for me.

I think I have 4 tattoos, and they are so small that the techs taped over them and drew a big x on the tape so they can find them.

Welcome, Carol.  I am envious of your "commute" for treatment!

8 down, 22 to go!  So far, so good!

MichellO, only 2 tattoos. My husband asked me why so few? I responded with "I wasn't going to ask!" I, too, had a mini breakdown, and was told by the tech that I was allowed to have a "pity party" once a week. Really? Here, let me shove my shoe up your A$$!

Thank you for the list Michelle!

I made it over from AC&T - glad to see some familiar faces.  I finished my first 9 trips.

A question - what do all of you think of when you are in there?  My mind just races.

Hi Pebee - welcome!  When I am lying there, I pretend the machine is the sun glowing down on me.  My way of coping, I suppose.  And it seems appropriate knowing I'll end up with some kind of "sunburn" by the end of all this.

Hi Guys and thanks so much for the warm welcome - feels good to have friends on my journey. I think about my dogs while getting treatments (although recently the loud Xmas music that they pipe-in drowns out any rational or irrational thoughts I might have)!!  I also have thoughts that this is all good because it is lowering my risk of recurrance. When I started they told me to breath normally which ofcourse made me focus on breathing and it was anything but normal - so I try not to focus on breathing!!

I apply cream immediately after treatments (I go in the morning), when I get home from work and before bed. I started several days before my first treatment. I was given the same list of products as Michelle. I then read about Jean's cream and Emu oil and got online and really like to combine both of those. The oil is light and the combo is absorbed easially and doesn't leave a mess like Aquaphor. So far my skin is not showing much after treatment 10.

SO - I have very friendly/relaxed techs, docs, and nurses. I was told not to put anything on my skin prior to my treatment, but they gave me Aquaphor and told me I could use it any time. It's base is petroleum jelly. I was told that Aloe was okay, and a cold cloth was okay to soothe (no ice). When I'm lying there I just close my eyes and try to relax so I don't move - my treatments are only about 5 minutes. The skin irritation is described as being like a sunburn, but it's almost like the burn is coming from within and surfacing.  I also take Tylenol at night to help me fall asleep - that's really the worst time because I'm not doing anything else, or thinking about anything else.

This really hasn't been that bad in the whole scheme of things, really.

I think of and pray for others I know who are on this or a similar journey.  Tx room has a nice lighted mural of trees and sunshine on the ceiling to look at, but I agree the piped in Christmas music is disgusting.

My room just has a little CD player. They play it quietly, and not even holiday music every day. Like I said, really lucky. I would seriously ask them to turn it down if I didn't like it. The worst they could say is no.

    Sandy,

PLEASE don't put on creams before rads.  That is one thing that every place says.  I'm very concerned about what might happen to you if you put cream on 2 hours before rads.

Sandy, I am sort of with Eileen.  Don't want to tell anyone what to do, but have not seen anyone say they were told to put cream on BEFORE rads.  Slather all you want right after, maybe, but please don't use it before.  I figure it would be a guaranteed skin irritation. The rad techs told me that any moisture in the area at all greatly raises the risk of burn.

Anyone else have any tenderness this weekend?  I've had 9 tx's and yesterday breast was a little tender, inside....

I did mention on Friday that the Xmas music was a bit loud and they turned it way down. I assume most people are OK with it and it really is not a huge issue but just one of those things that a small change might help during a difficult time. I find that I really appreciate those things that let me know people are sensitive to my needs - even the small stuff. I'm sure when I look back on all of this the loud Xmas music will be added to my list of so absurd it is funny!!

I was told not to put any creams on at least 4 hrs. prior to rads - or deoderant.

I think I have 4 tattoos - one on each side of my body, one below and between my breasts and not sure where the other is - but they are so tiny I can't really see them. Sometimes they draw small lines so the dots are more visable to assist the alignment. When I heard I was getting tattoos I requested a Wheaten Terrier tattoo but was turned down!!  lol  That one was also added to my so absurd it is funny list!!

I just did a search on moisturizing before a rads treatment.  Sandy should be fine so long as she is applying it two hours before treament.  There's not a lot out there but I did find this:

    http://www.upmc.com/HealthAtoZ/patienteducation/C/Pages/skin-care-during-radiation-therapy.aspx

The problem is that as we all learn, every radiation oncologist has different ideas about what to do, when to do it and what to use.  I'm guessing that Sandy's RO knows what works best in his practice.   My instructions say not to apply before treatment, but I'm guessing they mean "right before" treatment.  Who knows what the real window of opportunity might be, but I can't imagine her RO would say it's OK to apply at 2 hours before treatment if that would cause problems.

No tenderness for me, yet.  I've finished 8 of 30

Shelly - I am 1 treatment ahead of you and 2 ahead of Michelle (I just finished 10 of 30). Like you, my breast feels tender from inside and it feels sort of "full". I also noticed that my breast is sensitive to hot shower water hitting it directly so the skin is a bit sensitive but no visable skin changes - yet.

I am enjoying the weekend where I can get up and shower (I am using Dove unsented for sensitive skin), put on creams and relax without putting on a bra right away. I have heard that using cream starting on day 1 (or even before treatment starts) and prior to any skin changes might not prevent skin redness or sensitivity but might help skin stay soft and have a better return to normal.
