MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS - BETA GLUCANS BOOST IMMUNITY AND FIGHT CANCER
Since many of the Alternative therapy protocols use medicinal mushrooms, I think they are worth discussing. Here are my notes and links to sites and studies.
Basically, beta glucans are a group of naturally occurring polysaccarides (complex sugars) that are part of the cell walls of bacteria, plants and fungi. Mushrooms like Chaga, Reishi and Maitake contain many polysaccharides, molecules that have been shown in lab studies to have beneficial effects in fighting cancer cells.
Beta glucans are biological defense modifiers that nutritionally boost and balance the immune system. Glucans have been studied for many years, especially in light of their ability to turn on macrophage immune cells and the T-Cells, Natural Killer-Cells and B-Cell.
Beta Glucan action nutritionally supports the body, mainly when the immune cell population is being reduced by cancer, or such treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.
Also, a National Cancer Institute (www.nci.nih.gov) study showed that injecting tumors with glucan derivatives led to a reduction in their size. This was associated with migration of immune cells to the tumor site and with tumor necrosis (cell death).

RESEARCH ABOUT CHAGA, REISHI AND MAITAKE THAT YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING.
Tsi-Agha (Chaga)
Tsi-Ahga is a Native American Sacramental Medicine derived from Conks that grow on certain cone-bearing trees. The 3-beta-D-glucans which make up part of the cellular structure of these Conks cause a pan-systemic modulation of T-Cells, Macrophages and Neutrophil White Blood Cells, when ingested. In fact, it has been established that the number and viability of these particular cells is increased by as much as 4000% within 20 hours after taking Tsi-Ahga, Macrophages and Neutrophils are the two cells upon which all other Immune Cells depend.

Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi)
Research demonstrated Ganoderma may have anticancer and immune system enhancing properties. Animal studies have noted Ganoderma have hepatoprotective activities. Research has shown that Ganoderma contains compounds that may act as ACE inhibitors inihibit blood plateletsand have antifibrotic activity. According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering, "in clinical studies, Ganoderma lucidum increased plasma antioxidant capacity and enhanced immune responses in advance-stage cancer patients.
Ganoderma lucidum suppresses growth of breast cancer cells through the inhibition of Akt/NF-kappaB signaling.

Grifola frondosa (Maitake)
Prof. Dr. Hiroaki Nanba (professor in the Department of Microbial Chemistry of Kobe Pharmaceutical University in Kobe, Japan, in answering the question - Which diseases can be alleviated with the help of Maitake says: "Maitake can not only prevent the development of cancer, but also be used in the treatment of cancer and other serious diseases, such as AIDS and hepatitis. Maitake stimulates the immune system and therefore it is also able to reduce several side-effects of chemotherapy. There exists an astonishing synergistic effect between chemo and Maitake. Its antiviral effects against the HIV (AIDS) have been confirmed by the US National Cancer Institute. In a clinical trial with 165 patients at the age of 25-65 years with different advanced cancer diseases either a tumor regression or significant symptomatic improvements could be achieved with Maitake d-fraction in 73% of patients with breast cancer, 67% of patients with lung cancer and 47% of patients with liver cancer. In those cases in which Maitake extract was used in combination with chemotherapy the effects improved by 12%-28%. In cases of breast, prostate, lung and liver cancer significant effectiveness was evident; whereas in terms of bones and gastric cancer as well as of leukemia the extracts were not that effective.
Maitake (D fraction) mushroom extract induces apoptosis in breast cancer cells by BAK-1 gene activation.

evebarry, you're welcome.
I was planning on posting my notes from the World Cancer Healling Summit . I'm just not sure if I'll have time to do it any time soon. I'll do what I can though because I know the information is really important.
ETA : I will just post the Cliff notes that I just received from the Renegade Health Show. They basically recap each one hour presentation. The first two presenters were Dr. Nicholas Gonzales and Charlotte Gerson. I'll post only one per day over the next 10 days.

DR. NICOLAS GONZALEZ
Dr. Gonzalez talked about pancreatic enzyme therapy for cancer. His work is based on the work and research of Dr. Robert Good, William Donald Kelly www.drkelley.com/ and Dr. John Beard.
Dr. Gonzalez explains that early placenta tissue acts like cancer tissue and only when the body starts producing pancreatic enzymes, does that tissue then turn mature and stable. He believes trophoblastic tissues can divide and spread throughout the body and these tissues (not old, mature organ tissues) are the start of the tumor growth process.
The introduction of pancreatic enzymes into the body (or produced by the body) help to stabilize the unstable trophoblastic tissues and inhibits tumor growth. John Beard even back in 1911 said that the placenta may be the best way to study cancer. This came to light recently - almost 90 years later - in a study published in 1999. (You can find that here)
This angle is being studied and from Dr. Gonzalez's clinical experience, the effectiveness of high pancreatic enzyme treatment is being confirmed.
In Dr. Gonzalez's opinion there are three processes that must happen in order for the body to heal. These are (1) adaptation of a diet that fits your metabolic needs, (2) supplementation with essential nutrients (including also pancreatic enzymes), and (3) detoxification. Doing just one, doesn't work.
With diet, Dr. Gonzalez takes a metabolic typing approach to his protocol. He does this by a hair test that is available at his clinic. While many cancer clinicians feel that the removal of animal foods is appropriate for all cancer patients, Dr. Gonzalez has seen patients where this approach could be less effective. So the decision on diet is based very specifically on a person's genetics - not a one-size-fits-all diet approach.
Included in the detoxification protocols are things like liver/gallbladder flushes, colon cleansing and coffee enemas. (An interesting fact - coffee enemas were in the orthodox medical literature up to the 1950s and 1960s.) As the event moved on, many of these types of protocols were confirmed over and over again. Almost every contributor to the program cited multiple processes and protocols - all included diet, detoxification and supplementation.
Dr. Gonzalez believes that if you need surgery, get surgery. If surgery gives the patient a good chance of survival, he recommends it. If other treatments do as well, then he makes sure the patient gets the best care with all aspects of integrative, Western and natural approaches. To him, it makes little sense to try to naturally shrink a large and easily accessible tumor when surgery can remove it quickly. Its removal could help speed the healing process as well as help the patient emotionally and reduce stress.
Dr. Gonzalez confirmed that the stress response breaks down tissues and causes disease. If you're stressed, you must be careful. A stressed body becomes inflamed and an inflamed body becomes diseased.

princess123: Thanks for the recap...so much information it is hard to digest in one sitting.
-
Kaara, I know if I don't take notes, the information goes in one ear and out the next quickly. The brain can only handle so much info at a time. I tried explaining that to my aunt, but she doesn't get it. She has a counter of random supplements that she doesn't use because she can't remember why she chose to take them. (lol).
I agree with what Dr. G. said about a one size fits all approach to diet. I can see that it doesn't really make sense. There are many foods that are healthy that I can't eat i.e. coconuts, avocado, oranges, tomatoes that are beneficial for others.
As I mentioned before I just started eating small amounts of meat again. I'm sticking with wild meat only that are recommended for my blood type, which is B. I noticed that my body has difficulty digesting any commercial meats. Chicken, porc and beef are my enemies.
Generally, meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. The human digestive track is really not designed to handle lots of it. So, undigested meat remaining in the intestines just leads to more toxic buildup.
I read that cancer cell walls have a hard protein covering. By abstaining from, or just eating less, meat it allows more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and enables the body's natural killer cells to kill the cancer cells. So, I started taking digestive enzymes when I eat meat. I don't feel I need to take more than that. But, apparently according to Dr. G, for those who have aggressive cancers high dosages of enzymes are recommended.

CHARLOTTE GERSON (KEVIN GIANNI'S CLIFF NOTES)
Charlotte Gerson's talk, I want to be very clear about this important point: Avoiding all processed materials is one of the most effective ways to heal''. If there is one thing that all experts during this program would agree upon it would be that statement.
The Gerson Therapy is based on this simple principle. If you get the garbage out and stop putting it in, the body begins to heal itself. This is one of the reasons why many of the new diets that come out into the mainstream work (as long as someone actually complies!) The reason why is because almost none of these plans include processed foods. When you eliminate these from your diet, you can and will heal. (See: Vegan, Mediterranean, Raw Food Diet, Paleo, etc.)
"People think they're smarter than Dr. Gerson, I'm afraid they're not." I wanted to pick out this quote from Charlotte because it says something much deeper about how people tend to go about their healing. There's nothing wrong with finding an approach that works for you (for any condition), but what I think Charlotte is saying here is that there comes a time when you have to trust the people who you've enlisted for your care to do what they know works best - and not let the Internet, family members or anyone else sway you to do things that may or may not help your situation.I've seen very intelligent people continue to be sick because they've decided to go against the advice of a health practitioner because they thought they knew better than a person who's dedicated their lives to working with people with that condition in a one-on-one setting. Yes, I'm all for health freedom, but I'm also for finding smart people to help and listening to what they say!
All diseases have the same underlying issues - toxicity and deficiency.
Charlotte explains that disease starts with toxicity and deficiency. If you don't get enough nutrition, you will become deficient and the body's systems will start to break down. This is one way you get sick. The second way to get sick is to be exposed to toxic compounds that interfere with the body's systems. Any disease protocol, then should include detoxification, eating healthy, nutritious, non-contaminated foods, and supplementation with nutrients that may not be sufficient from our foods.
See the treatments that the Gerson Institute is using in their clinics that they say are helping people prevent and heal naturally from cancer and other degenerative diseases.www.gerson.org/

As a result of listening to this seminar, I ordered the Raw Food book, got my juicer back from my son who isn't using it right now, and am in the process of ordering a Vitamix blender. Our old one is shot, so the timing is good.
If we can detox our bodies and then begin putting only good whole food in, we begin to create an atmosphere where cancer can't grow.
I tried to get in to review notes last night, but couldn't unless I had purchased the complete program. I was particularly interested in reviewing that IPT theory again. It made complete sense to me that if you are going to incorporate any kind of chemo into your treatment, it would make sense to do the low dose variety that isn't toxic. Too bad the conventional community still frowns on this.
princess123...thanks again for sharing your notes.
-
Kaara, the Vitamix is the way to go. I'm looking at purchasing one too. Unlike the juicer/blender Montel Williams endorses, the reviews for the Vitamix on Amazon are excellent. It's expensive though.
I just received the latest notes. I didn't have to pay. Maybe check your email again.
How do you plan on detoxing?

Now Charles backs coffee cure for cancer
Angry doctors warn of dangers as Prince of Wales lends support to controversial alternative treatment. Health Editor Jo Revill reports
Prince Charles has never made a secret of his love affair with alternative medicine. Now he has infuriated the medical profession by backing a controversial cancer treatment which involves taking daily coffee enemas and drinking litres of fruit juice instead of using drugs. Charles gave an enthusiastic endorsement last week to the Gerson Therapy, which eschews chemotherapy in favour of 13 fruit juices a day, coffee enemas and weekly injections of vitamins.

BUDWIG PROTOCOL: Apparently, there's a group on yahoo FlaxSeedOil2. The moderator has videos, showing the recipes http://www.budwig-videos.com
The Budwig FOCC diet requires you to eat 3 tbsp. of flaxseed oil daily with 6 tbsp. of low fat cottage cheese. Mix the flaxseed oil with the cottage cheese in a blender. If the resulting mixture seems to thick to drink, add 3 tbsp. of low fat milk. Once you have thoroughly mixed the ingredients, add 2 tbsp. of freshly ground flaxseeds to the mixture. Additionally, you can add cinnamon, fresh lemon juice and a variety of nuts.
Budwig states that there is science behind the combination of these foods. Precancer and cancer cells contain low amounts of oil, and the presence of oil promotes oxygen respiration in the cells instead of fermentation. This creates a toxic environment for cancer. However, your body typically has a difficult time absorbing flaxseed and other beneficial oils. According to Budwig, by combining cottage cheese with flaxseed, the flaxseed becomes water soluble, enabling your bloodstream to transport the fatty oils.

Prince Charles has cancer?
Scientists have found evidence of cancer in skeletons thousands of years old, way before processed foods were invented. What would have caused their cancers, I wonder?
-
Enjoyfool, hi. apparently Prince Charles supports finding ways of preventing breast cancer. I did not know that.
Prince Charles backs alternative therapies for cancer care
The Prince of Wales highlighted the importance of using complementary therapies in tandem with conventional medicine today as he learned about a pioneering study into the causes of cancer.Charles praised the work of scientists from the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer as he toured the organisation's research centre in Chelsea, west London.
The charity's Breakthrough Generations study is believed to be the largest and most thorough investigation of its kind, begun in 2004 and due to involve 100,000 women.
From its inception, the project is due to last 40 years and will look at the genes, hormones and lifestyles of the women in the hope of finding ways of preventing breast cancer.
The first results are expected in a few years' time and already 65,000 volunteers have been recruited for the scheme.
Charles, who is patron of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, told staff and other guests at the end of his visit that 44,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
He added: "In a grim way, that does underline the significance and great urgency of the need to understand more fully the causes of breast cancer, its development and the potential for new treatments."
The prince empathised with the many women who are told the devastating news that they have the illness.
He said it "must be distressing to have an actual diagnosis of cancer quite apart from undergoing the treatment itself"....

princess123: There are recipes in the Raw Food book that I purchased for a 7 day fast that seems easy to do. I downloaded the book and am reading about it now. I know that Vitamix is expensive but if we are going to change the way we eat, we must have it. I love the idea of the blended soups, and being able to do everything right in one container. I will still use the juicer..it's one of the nice ones..Champion. Carrots you still have to juice...can't do them in the blender, and I love carrot juice.
I've been on this alkaline diet for about two weeks now...eating a lot of salads and veggies, a little fish and chicken or turkey, but no meat, and of course nothing white. I lost about 5 pounds and feel better overall.
-
Kaara. I hear you the Vitamix is a good investment. I think you can also make yogurt with it. You've only been raw for two weeks and already you're feeling good. It only gets better my dear.
There's a woman, Mimi Kirk, who was voted sexiest raw vegan over 50. She's 71. She takes no medications and she does look good. She has written a recipe book. You can find her story on Youtube.
Well....you are what you eat. If you eat oily flaky pastry, you will soon look oily, flaky and pasty. If you eat fresh, raw, fruit and vegetables (live foods!) , you will look and feel, fresh and alive!
Vital elements are destroyed when our food is heated. We need whole, live vitamins, enzymes and nutrients to maintain a healthy body. Without these elements, our bodies can't work as they should.

DR. CONTRERAS ( KEVIN GIANNI'S NOTES)
Simple carbohydrates, fats and proteins feed cancer.
Dr. Contreras explains, that simple carbohydrates, excess fat and excess protein can feed cancer. Dr. Otto Warburg showed in the 1930's that malignant cells liked to get energy from fat and protein, so a diet of complex carbohydrates from plants show a positive effect in cancer patients. He also states that for many years, most doctors thought that diet played no role in the treatment or cause of cancer..
Dr. Contreras does talk about metabolic typing when it comes to diet. A high plant based diet can help prevent disease - including cancer.
Is the best diet for a cancer patient a vegan one?
In Dr. Contreras' experience, a vegan diet is best for patients. This diet, as I mentioned above, is 100% plant based and - in his practice - limits fat and protein.
To clarify, he also says that for the rest of the population, this is not necessary, but we need to reduce significantly the consumption of high quality protein and the consumption of simple carbohydrates.
Most or all of the doctors would agree that eating as many plants as possible is good protocol when you have cancer.
Confirmation of the enzyme therapy...
On Night 1, Dr. Gonzalez talked extensively about using enzymes for cancer treatment. Charlotte Gerson spoke about it as well. Guess what happened on Night 2 as well?
This..."So one of the things that we must manage, especially in cancer patients, is inflammation so we use a number of elements not only enzymes. But enzymes play a major, major role in the reduction and control of inflammation and that's why we use enzyme therapy. That's one of the reasons. Of course also enzymes that are digestive enzymes are very important for patients for them to be able to utilize foods better. Then they will be better metabolized for the absorption of the nutrients that the food is aimed to do. A lot of times we will consume foods that have rich content of nutrients but if they're not digested correctly then those nutrients will not end up where they need to end up. So yes, for those two reasons we use quite a bit of enzymes on our patients."
Show me the numbers.
My favorite part of this call was Dr. Contreras showing us his success numbers. There was no skirting the issue here, he even has them on his website - which I'm going to direct you to now - so you can look at them yourself: http://www.oasisofhope.com/patient-survival-statistics.php
You may want to bookmark that page and share it the next time someone comes to you questioning how effective natural and integrative therapies are.
I love this quote..."The difference between a venom and a cure is not the substance, it's the dose."You can overdo just about anything. Every plant food has alkaloids. If you eat too much of anything it could be irritating to the body - yes, even spinach or kale or squash.
Here are his thoughts on breast cancer.

Dr. Francisco Contreras Part 1 Alternative Cancer Treatments Part 1
He says, the medical society of the world has gone astray from the original calling. He feels we have to go back to a time where there is care and respect for the patient...The problem is not medicine. The problem is the approach. Oncologists who have cancer do not use chemo.. (This is interesting!)

DR. LEIGH ERIN CONNEALY (KEVIN GIANNI'S NOTES)
What's you with your head?
Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy explains that many doctors - past and present - do in fact believe that any effective cancer healing protocol must address the mindset of the patient.
Annmarie (my wife) and I have been around the country and have spoken to many different practitioners about this and some have candidly shared that they know which patients will make it and which ones won't just by talking to them and by reading their attitude toward the situation.
I guess what's interesting (scary) is that what you're thinking now, could lead to disease later on in life. Crazy... I'd suggest starting to change your thoughts if you felt any truth in that statement!
Cancer cells don't like to be oxidized!
Cancer cells don't like oxygen. It destroys them. In order to bring oxygen to the body, the best ways are deep breathing and exercise. I can't tell you how many people ask me about using this gadget or that for their health when they haven't exercised in 10 years. You just can't deny the effects of exercise, nor can you afford to not move your body.
To comment on breathing, I bet you're breathing shallowly as you read this. If you are, take a deep belly breath now and visualize the oxygen going into your lungs and then flowing through your bloodstream to cleanse it.
Our biggest disagreement to date...
The Gerson Therapy uses plenty of carrot juice, Dr. Contreras recommends none, Dr. Connealy says only a little. The reason why these doctors limit it is because of its high sugar content.
Who's right?I'm not a clinician, so I have no idea, but based on what we've heard to date, I don't think a little carrot juice is harmful to the body - and it definitely does not cause cancer. -
A rebounder is the best exercise for the immune system
Monday, January 31, 2011 by: Melissa Makris
(NaturalNews) Not many people have heard of a rebounder, but bouncing on this simple contraption has an amazing number of health benefits. One such benefit is how it strengthens the immune system by quickly and efficiently flushing out the lymphatic system.
Blood and lymph are the two types of fluid that flow through the circulatory system. This consists of the cardiovascular system (heart, blood, and blood vessels) and the lymphatic system (lymph, lymph nodes, and lymph vessels).
It is common knowledge that the cardiovascular system relies on the heart to pump blood, but the lymphatic system has no such pump. It relies solely on the body's physical movement to move lymph fluid around.
When the lymphatic fluid moves along freely, cells are able to get the oxygen and other nutrients they need. The lymphatic system is also responsible for removing metabolic waste, toxins, abnormal cells, bacteria, and viruses from the body. When a person is relatively inactive, the lymph fluid becomes congested, stagnant, and toxic. A sluggish lymphatic system causes a suppressed immune system and paves the way for many common diseases.
It is important to note that any kind of exercise will keep the lymphatic system flushed, but the rebounder is the most efficient way to move lymph fluid around. This is because bouncing, a vertical motion exercise, smoothly opens and closes the one-way valves that make up the lymphatic system. Most other exercises, like walking or jogging, are dominated by horizontal movements that are not as effective at moving lymph.
Jumping on a rebounder, even gently, increases lymph flow by as much as 15-30 times. This means that bouncing just a few minutes several times a day will fully flush your lymphatic system and invigorate your immune system. Rebounding is also a low impact exercise, meaning just about anyone can benefit. Stabilizer bars are available for those unsure of their balance.
Despite the lack of attention rebounders receive, bouncing on a high quality unit is one of the healthiest exercises around. The benefits go well beyond a stronger immune system, but it is undeniably one of the most important ways we can benefit from this fun and easy activity. -
Weight Lifting Can Benefit Cancer Survivors
December 2010
Contrary to decades of doctors' advice, a new study has found that a weight lifting may not put women at risk for developing lymphedema after breast cancer surgery.
In fact, the study found that lifting weights under supervision may lower women's chances of developing lymphedema, according to results that will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.....www.livescience.com/10334-weight-lifting-benefit-breast-cancer-sur...
-
I just walked for an hour on the treadmill, but you have inspired me to pull out my rebounder!
-
I'm finally ordering a rebounder today. I hope others get inspired too.
-
My goodness....I used to have a rebounder years ago and used it daily. I stopped because I developed a small hernia and the doctor told me that was what caused it. Now I go to the gym and do a half hour on the eliptical which I have heard is the equivalent of the rebounder. Also do some circuit training on the weight machines. In NC we have a home gym which has an eliptical and one of those total gyms that you see on tv. My boyfriend loves it, but I injured my shoulder on it, so I'm careful what I do now. Really, anything that gets the body moving and resisting is good!
-
I'm going to repost something I just posted about alcohol, because I think the ladies on this thread will find it relevant....
________________________________________________________________________________
The problem with cancer treatments is that they never completely eliminate ALL of the cancer cells. And the ones that are left over are often resistant to treatment. So at that point, it is about making the terrain (your body) as hostile to cancer as possible. So cutting sugar, meat, dairy, all the things that feed cancer, is very helpful. Beer and liquor are very bad, cancer-wise. Red wine is the best choice because it has antioxidants, but drink it with food, so it doesn't cause a blood sugar spike. And probably limit yourself to one drink a night.
Alcohol makes your natural killer cells sluggish, impairs macrophage activity and reduces T cell counts. It also increases your levels of oxidative stress, which impairs your body's inflammatory response. Result: more inflammation, which has been linked to cancer.Alcohol also slows down your metabolism, which makes you gain weight. Also not good for breast cancer.
Our cancer started with ONE cell that went haywire. So making the terrain as inhospitable to those cells is important. I know that it sucks. I miss my old life, too. And while I don't think that we "caused" our cancer, I have also read enough to know that diet/lifestyle does make a difference. I also know that there are plenty of health nut/vegans that get cancer. However, I don't think that they are in the majority. I considered myself a health nut before I got diagnosed, but I was still able to make a lot of changes which means my lifestyle wasn't as healthy as I thought it was.
hdangelbaby, I'm sorry that your friend said that. She is probably scared out of her mind for both of you. People say the strangest things to reassure themselves that they won't get cancer. But, if I were you, I'd cut out the alcohol except for special occasions. Totally up to you, though.
-
ITA. Alcohol can also deplete your magnesium levels. Red wine is the best choice. But, I read that even just a 1/2 glass of wine per day increases the risk for breast cancer in women with estrogen positive tumors. I still have a glass of wine only when I go out for dinner or on special occasions. But, I always feel a little tired the next day.
-
sweetbean: Good post...thanks so much. I've never been much of a drinker, but did like a glass of wine now and then. I've given it up completely since this recent challenge, along with some other dietary changes, and I find that I don't miss it at all. It amazes me that when I refuse a glass of wine, friends look at me strangely and even ask...do you have problem with alcohol? I just tell them that I have made some changes to my diet and no alcohol is one of them.
I have a friend who survived her bout with colon cancer...did the chemo and everything. She even told me that her doctor said that sugar was feeding her cancer, but she still drinks a lot. She says she would rather have that than dessert. What can you say?
princess123: I had some wine at a wedding, along with a piece of wedding cake, and boy did I know the next day...my body was not happy!
