Natters - I've already had 2 of my markings come off. They put a big X with a sharpie then placed a sticker over them. They were the ones between my cleavage. I think my bra and the sweat makes them come off. They told me not to worry about it because they have the tattoo underneath it. BTW, what area of SW Pa do you live? I'm from there as well.
I've completed #3 of 30. I'm worried about what kind of bra I'm going to wear later on. I cannot order one because I'm an odd size. I tried a few on without underwires and nothing was comfortable and I'm not even sore yet. The nurse told me that I'd more than likely be very red and raw under my breast because that's where my incision is (in the crease) so of course the boosts will be concentrated in that area as well. The band on the bras hit directly on the incision. Going braless is out. I have to wear one to work. Any suggestions?

I didn't get any tattoos yet, just pen marks, some covered with stickers, I live in the city of Pittsburgh and my rads are at Shadyside. I have to wear a bra everyday, too! My nurse suggested that I try wearing a thin cotton t-shirt between my skin and bra - sounds weird to wear a shirt under your bra, but I will do it if/when I start to get sore! She said I could also try folding a soft piece of cloth in the crease after rads, to prevent the underside of my breast from laying on the skin of my chest. I am thinking of going shopping for some softer, larger, more cottony bras soon, too. They may not support me as well or look great under clothes, but may work better than my tight bras if my skin gets irritated.

Let me know if you find something comfortable. I really don't want to spend alot on them because I'm an underwire gal.

Hello all. Glad this thread is here (and that Kay suggested I chime in!) I just had rad #2 today so I'm on my way. Really loved the encouragement and comment about "the days are long but the weeks are short". THAT will keep me going. I'm finding it tough to get up to speed with everything but Klick, I love your comment about "pinafore"! I think you mentioned something about using calendula if necessary. My ro has me using calendula proactively and I'm praying I'll avoid getting a really bad burn...

Hey gals,
Don't you know those "DESIGNER GOWNS" cost a lot of $$$$.. We are supposed to like them...LOL

Sarytyr,
Wondering how your rad. treatments went. My surgeon has encouraged me to go that route. I have my first appt. with the MO and RO next tuesday.

Hi
I'm so glad I found this discussion group. I think there are a lot of us in the same phase of our radiation treatments. I had my second one today and was surprised when I got home and found a message that the radiation machine had "gone down" and they have to reschedule while they wait for a part. My son said, "Well mom, maybe they accidentally gave all your treatments at once. Now you'll be able to read in bed without turning on the light." Thanks a lot.I was also surprised when the technician told me to start immediately to use the creams etc. I thought the redness and burning didn't start for a while. I should have read more on your posts. It sounds really important to start the skin products even before zaps. Well better late than never.
My right breast feels kind of odd…not pain, but tingly. I wonder if I'm just imagining it…
Dawmson—good advice to test products before you slather them onVicks—Your hematoma description was sure vivid…my breast started swelling last week and I think the Doctor's assistant heard the panic in my voice this afternoon, because she got me in to see him tomorrow morning. I imagine it's a seroma or other fluid buildup. Yuck!
Natters—I also feel repelled by the tattoos and marks. It's like a brand on cattle, that they are "owned" by someone. It's silly and I'm sure it will pass. Someday, when I'm through with this, I'll get them removed.
I just looked at my tattoos again and feel cranky.

Hi
I'm so glad I found this discussion group. I think there are a lot of us in the same phase of our radiation treatments. I had my second one today and was surprised when I got home and found a message that the machine had "gone down" and they have to reschedule while they wait for a part. My son said, "Well mom, maybe they accidentally gave all your treatments at once. Now you'll be able to read in bed without turning on the light." Thanks a lot.
I was also surprised when the technician told me to start immediately to use the creams etc. I thought the redness and burning didn't start for a while. I should have read more on your posts. It sounds really important to start the skin products even before zaps. Well better late than never.
My right breast feels kind of odd…not pain, but tingly. I wonder if I'm just imagining it…Dawmson—good advice to test products before you slather them on.
Vicks—Your hematoma description was sure vivid…my breast started swelling last week and I think the Doctor's assistant heard the panic in my voice this afternoon, because she got me in to see him tomorrow morning. I imagine it's a seroma or other fluid buildup. Yuck.
Natters—I feel repelled by the tattoos and marks, too. It's like a brand on cattle, that they are "owned" by someone. I know it's silly and I'm sure it will pass. I'm trying really hard not to be silly about everything, but someday, when I'm through with this, I'll get them removed.
I just looked at my tattoos again and feel cranky.
Something has got to hold it together.
I'm saying my prayers to Elmer, the Greek god of glue."

Klick - I know exactly what you mean by the tingly feeling. I had that from day one. It's not painful.... just a little tingly. It goes away after a couple of hours. I thought maybe I was crazy!

I am leaving for #24 out of 34. On Wed, I talked the RO into letting me continue. My skin is real red but no peeling or blisters and it does not hurt. She wanted me to take a 4 day weekend and I just want to keep going to get it over! She will see me Mon before treatment and let me know if I can continue. I am going braless over the weekend. Anything to help. Have only 3 more full breast and 7 boosts to do.
MostlySew--Woo-hoo! You are almost there. I am getting excited for you.

Cotton bras a great. I used cotton sport bras. May not look the best but feels better.

rn4babies, I might check out the Target in East Liberty this weekend if I get a minute, and I'll let you know what I find. They told me to take my bra off when I get home from rads, if at all possible, but I definitely need one if I'm anywhere out in public. My nurse actually said some of her older patients will refuse to give up their underwire at first, and she tells them to at least wear a soft, thin shirt between the bra and their skin.
Silia, they didn't tell me to use anything before treatment but I've been trying to remember to slather on some Lubriderm to soften up that skin a little, because that's what my gf bought for us. On Monday, I plan to start using Miaderm - I read about it on here and ordered it on amazon. Someone named katehudson with very few SEs recommended Udderly Smooth. Sounds like there are lots of different options but I don't think it can hurt to use it even before you have side effects. Why wait until the skin is dry and irritated, right?
Go, Pam! Hope it went OK today and I am glad that your RO is letting you continue. You sound so ready to be done! I hope I do as well with you, and avoid the blistering and peeling. I have olive skin that tans easily - but I also blister and chafe pretty easily, so I am worried about it.
I'm jealous of you people that are almost done but glad I waited and got a couple months of pretending to be normal and enjoying my new canoe and the last few weeks of warm sunshine. Which reminds me - I am going to Miami for work in a couple weeks, but I think I am supposed to get my radiated skin out of the sun? It will be interesting to try and figure that one out...
-
MostlySew -- YAY, you're almost there!
Natters - When I started getting some irritation in the crease underneath my breast when running or riding, I started to wear a cotton undershirt next to my skin and a sports bra on top. Looks a bit weird, but it makes a difference. And yeah, I've been told to keep my radiated skin away from the sunshine (which isn't a problem these days in Ontario, Canada)
Klick -- yes I started using the caldenda gel right from the get-go and a lot of other ladies have used cream even before starting. But don't worry, as I think others have been told not to start using creams unless/until their skin was getting red. Go figure -- we are all getting various instructions it seems. Also re the riding -- yep, apparently it isn't quite like getting back on a bike, according to friends who rode in their youth and restarted as adults.
Pam53 -- hope you were able to keep on going -- you're so close to finished!
rn4babies and klick. I had twinges from time to time after my first few rads and after the last few. So either you're not crazy or I am too!

Number 19 today--halfway point for me!
Bad news today: "my machine" is going down for scheduled maintenance on a weekday. Good news: they are letting us all have a "make up day" on a Sunday, so we don't have to add a day on the end. Don't know why, but adding days just sounds so sad to me!!!
For those struggling with tatoos---I did too! In fact, a different set of people do the "set up" at my office, and they said no problem to not having tatoos. They said I'd have to put up with marks, and be willing to come in if they fade. I said no problem. The ones that DO the radiation and the simulation had a different song. They STRONGLY recommended the tatoos. I cried. They were so sweet about it, but I saw the wisdom of the tatoos. In my case especially, they are radiating all around my heart, and I DO need precision. Those pen marks were coming off, I was reacting to the stickers they put on (red rashy skin) and the stickers would move if I sweat at all. The day i did get the tatoos I was still a mess. . . . time helped me.
On the bra question. . . . I can't wear one, at all. They said not to, and when I did, it was yucky to take off. Apparently I have swelling in the radiated area, and that bra really dug in. My solution was to go back to wearing the camisole they gave me after my mx. It isn't very supportive, but much better than nothing!
Here's to the weekend and a couple of days to let the skin rest!!

I had #4 today and I'm already having skin issues! When I awoke this AM, I though I felt a little "burning". Again, I thought maybe it was all in my head. Well, after my tx today, my incision is firey red (its about 7 cm in the crease under my breast) and my skin on my chest has small areas on it that almost looks like broken blisters. It's quite uncomfortable, too. I've been using Aquaphor and tried to find Udderly Smooth but our Walmart didn't carry it (if it's in the skin care aisle). Is it unusual to have skin problems already? I do sweat alot under my breasts. My RO didn't think I'd have any problems because I'm olive skinned and don't burn very easily. Any suggestions?

Hi
We had our first whole day of rain today. Real rain that filled the gutters, dripped off the buildings, and made the umbrellas bloom. It's fun to walk on the beach on days like this.
Today I saw my doc because my right breast has swelled quite a bit. He says it's normal and will slowly go away. Now I get to watch it turn red and unhappy from the zaps.
The radiation machine that broke yesterday isn't repaired yet, so I don't go in until Monday. Like you, FivekidsMom, I don't want the day put on at the end. I just want to finish!Have a great weekend everyone.

yesterday I completed 7 of my 33. I haven't looked out to the future to an end date because it puts less pressure on me. I just get myself to my appt, I'm still having serious joint pain from the taxol... I feel better by noon. I just found out I'm BRCA 1+ so now I have that to contend with. This is not like me- I have stayed in a positive fighting mode until now. Maybe I'm just spent, this has been a long haul. I hope my skin holds up- so far so good.

Hi rn4babies,
I'm so sorry you're having skin issues already. Apparently skin tone, color, tanning ability makes no difference as to how each body reacts to radiation. I started getting red on the top of my breast after the 1st treatment. Diagnosed as "radiation induced inflammation". At that time, the only thing that worked for me to get the heat/redness to calm down was aloe Vera gel (99.9%). Aquaphor and mMiaderm didn't help at all. When the actual burning started, then the aloe didn't help the pain but Calendula cream worked wonders.
Long story short.....check with your RO nurse and see if she has anything to recommend. They frequently have different samples you can try. Best to keep on top of it. I was given steroid cream about half way thru which helped, but the boosts are just too much for my skin now, so they've put me on a much stronger dose. They also tried Sulfadeen but that burned as much as the burn! Oh, I did find Utterly Smooth cream at a Rite Aid just the other day. On sale too.
Bra issues, a lot of gals can find exercise bras, all cotton, which are very cheap, just get a really loose one and wear loose clothing or textured sweaters. I never found one big enough for these DD boobs, and at this point have given up bras entirely. When I was wearing them, I found that a strip of an old, soft cotton t-shirt cut to about 4" x 9" and tucked under my boob under the bra helped considerably with chaffing and rubbing.
Pam 53 and llm005, thanks for the encouragement. This burn area is getting difficult to deal with, but I'm down to counting the days on one hand.....Whohoo! Just 3 to go....
Pam53, you're just about done too.....the home stretch...... -
Beagles girl,
I'm so sorry you've now got more to deal with. BC is all so difficult, each of the stages. Come here often and this fine group of women can help you get thru this. I think lots of us have found the radiation is a very emotionally draining thing which I believe none of us really expected. Keep trucking along, day by day, and this truly will get finished. Hugs to you. -
In late Spring I went through 7 weeks of radiation after lumpectomy in March. I found the radiation TX to be a piece of cake - a little itchy and red towards the end but nothing that the cream they gave did not take care of. It will be over before you know - BTW I did not get any of the tiredness that so many girls seem to.
-
Grrrrrrr! It really upsets me that med profs pick and choose what to tell us! I had a left-side lumpectomy - Noone on my Rad team ever mentioned any increased risks concerning heart and lungs due to left side. Thanks for sharing. I ofen learn more from this and other threads than I do from any med profs.

kay1963, thanks for the detailed description. the mold scares me...but soon i will find out my position. my tumor was at 11 o'clock but deep in the back, away from the skin, and not too close to the wall. hope they will tell me to sit up. (not much chance)
kk - wow it sounds like you are ready to kick this 2nd round of BC. How was it diagnosed? I have asked about having my other breast looked at diagnostically but was told not to worry about it. Well, I can't help it. I always wondered what I'd do if I had a recurrence. Good luck with this, and I hope it seems to go by quickly.
robyn - I feel like my time is not important....and in between appointments I feel like I do not even have a doctor. Am in between MO (who has not spoken to me since my initial appointment. I turned down chemo as it was presented as optional. I am waiting over 3 weeks for my rads consult. Am 2 months past surgery and it will be awhile before the rads begin. The MO did start my Arimidex while I am waiting; but still, she had her NP call it in and I never spoke with her again. Wait Wait Wait....and worry....and sometimes forget that I have BC then remember I'm not done yet. Good luck to you....
Watchful - great to start the rads at last. I hope it is going OK for you.Hugs & prayers to all - you are so helpful and caring.
-
Joan they didn't look at your other side at all? I had a mammogram at first (looked at both sides) then an MRI after dx. I understood one reason was to look for disease on the other side.
I will say that my MO's office has been outstanding! When I had concerns (okay I was freaking out) about my MX, it was the MO's office that "talked me down from the ledge" and even offered antianxiety meds, instead of just telling me to call the surgeon. I can't say enough about their care OF and FOR me.
Sher, as I understand it, there is slightly more risk to radiating the left side, but most RO's are careful about it and I was told "it's all in the angles". From what I read, it's very hard to tell what TODAY'S technology is capeable of. The studies showing heart/lung damage are based on women who were radiated 20 yrs ago, NOW having damage. We all know technology has come a long way. . . . . on the other hand, we have no way of knowing what the effects might be 20 yrs from now. My tumor was left sided, AND the cancer had spread to the intramammary nodes. I'm getting rads to either side of my heart as it were. I chose to read, read, read, and actually cancelled my planning CT/appointment twice, and get a 2nd consultation to address my fears. I told my RO I couldn't proceed unless I completely understood and was on board with the tx plan. Oh, and I brought my hubby to the 2nd consulation
Don't be afraid to ask questions, or even look for another RO if you need to!

You know some times you just know your own bodies, When they found the first cancer on the left, they thought they saw something on the right side also. After a more intense mammo, they said it was clear. I never felt good about that and felt a lump in the right breast before I went back for my mammo 4 months later. They could not find anything on the mammo but did a ultrasound and also did not find anything in that area. But I believe the Lord pushed that wand a little higher and there was a very small spot that they did a biopsy on. Yes it was cancer but only 3 mm. They feel that you have to treat this just as you would a larger lump. I feel very confident in the results, and like all the rest of you know I am going to beat this with God's help. Good luck to all of you taking radiation. I didn't think of the days I had left - I just took one day at a time. I know it is harder for those of you that still work and have families, but that is another reason to fight harder. This website is like a sisterhood and we feel for one another and have a special relationship. Love to all.r

Been having a tough emotional weekend. Picked up a book at the library called "After Breast Cancer: a guide to life after treatment". So far it is an excellent read, and confirming lots of emotions/feelings/fears I've been having. Good to know I'm not going crazy, but not so sure all of it is encouraging. The book says that for many women, the time right after treatment is emotionally/psychologically harder than the time during diagnosis and treatment. ugh. Breast Cancer: the gift that keeps on giving!!
Thinking I need to go carve pumpkins with my little guys. Just them and me at home this afternoon. I don't like halloween, but this year, I feel like I want to make memories!
-
My onc told me the same thing 5kidsMom. Was asking me all kinds of questions about how my relationship with my husband was and other stuff. I don't know if I like that better than the when was your last period and are you constipated or do you have diarrhea or not. I don't think I like either!
The rad techs told me I was pretty "pink" on Friday. I think I'm beat red. Not sore or pealing or blistering though. Hope it stays that way. They told me to use Aquaphor instead of the Eucerin lotion, so I switched. It is like vaseline. It is so sticky! If it works, it is so worth it though.
Happy Halloween everyone!

I used aquaphor and I thought it was wonderful. It is sticky, but if it works - works for me!!!

Anyone have tips on tiredness? I started to get tired last week after #9 and figured this weekend I'd recover but it feels like it's gotten worse. I slept 9 hours fri and sat nite and woke up feeling tired. This afternoon I had a grande coffee that perked me up for a couple hours but now it's 6pm and I feel like i could probably be in bed by 8. Of course I can't; there's dinner to make and pumpkins to carve tonight with the kids.
I'm worried that since I've done 13 and still have 20 to go that it will get really hard if I'm this tired already. My husband leaves Friday for a 5-day work trip overseas. Wasnt excited to hear about that but he has to do it. i was hoping we could go out this weekend to celebrate my halfway point. Maybe I'll see if some friends can go instead.
In the meantime, anyone else yawning? -
Hi ladies! I'm so sorry I've been MIA for a few days, but have been super busy at work. I also had #15 of 26 plus 5 boosts on Friday, and I too, am starting to feel a little fatigue settling in. I'm also noticing a little stiffness in my right shoulder joint when I stretch.
The Miaderm is still working well. I have an extra tube, unopened and still sealed, and I don't think I'll need it (4 oz.) If anyone is interested in purchasing, drop me a PM and we can work something out.
Kk, sorry to hear of your 2nd DX. That is such a bummer, but it sounds like you are doing all the right things, and so is your healthcare team.
Beagles, hang in there, sweetie. You're just exhausted...think of all you've been through. Give yourself a little break and do something special just for yourself. Get plenty of rest and take care of yourself.
My husband and I went out with some friends last night for Halloween, all in costume, of course! We all went as characters from Rocky Horror Picture Show...I went as Columbia:
Had a lot of compliments on my costume, especially my make up and hair. I learned some of the make up tricks in Look Good Feel Better, and the hair was one of my treatment wigs! All courtesy of BC, I guess! My husband went as Dr. Frank-n-furter...yes, he was dressed like this:
We had a great time though...but I'm really pooped out today!
You all are doing a wonderful job of caring for each other during these trying days. Keep up the great work, ladies! You ALL are AMAZING...AND plucky and intrepid!!
:::hugs::: Martha
