    Hello ladies!

    This is my first visit to this site.  I had a partial Mastectomy on Oct 14, along with removal of lymph nodes.  Over the weekend, my breast swelled super big, went to surgeon on Monday, Tues morning he did surgery and scraped out 1000cc (about 1 qt) of blood.  Whole breast and much of area was large hematoma.  Anyway, today he removed the stitches and Tues. I have an appointment with the oncologist and raidiologist/oncologist.  Not sure what to expect, other that the surgeon says I am a good candidate for the treatment where they go directly into the breast for the radiation.

    I have really appreciated being able to read your experiences  guess the old addage of 'Misery loves company' must be it..

    Hello to all - on my way to get grandchildren ready for school - fortunately, they only live a block away from me. My moriings are busy, but my wonderful grandchildren brighten each day and give me the motivation I need to keep going.     Wecome to the site to those new ladies.  You learn so much from each other.  After going through a lumpectomy and radiation on the left breast and finishing on August 26th, we have found a small site on the right breast.  Had a lumpectomy on that two days ago and am doing fine. Nothing in the lymph nodes.  Really no pain, but I did not have any the first time around.  Will probably start my radiation about the first of December.  Merry Christmas - Right?  It went very well the first time around and know it will be fine this time also.  This lump was only 3 mm and they could not believe they could find it with the ultrasound.  Good to catch it early.  About the creams - I used during the day  Aquaphor by Eucerin and I would exercise.  I think perspiring with that ointment kept my breast really healthy.  I had so very little burning.  At night I would use Eucerin Origianal lotion.  I am sure I will stick with the same this time also.  I know all of our skin is different and some are affect more.  Good luck to all of you that are just starting the radiation.  Hope all goes well for you. By the time I finish the second time around, I will be an expert. HA

    kk59jk-So sorry you're back!

    I'm so frustrated and ready to be finished with all this! I just called the rad center to see if they've finished my planning/schedule, etc., and have a start date, and the tech got kind of snippy with me and said it will take up to 10 business days (this is only business day 4). Well...okay...but the doc said I could start 10-14 days after final chemo, and this is day 12, so....obviously not. Then I asked if I could or should commit to attending a training session for work on Friday, 11/4, and she said I could "if that was more important to me." Well, it's not...but I'd like to let my boss know one way or the other...and it doesn't sound like I'll have an answer by then anyway...but I don't want to put if off at all! Argh. So frustrated! My son's teachers are on strike, I don't dare make an appointment for anything at all. I feel like life is completely out of my control at this point. I think I'll just cry for a bit, have a cup of tea, then go back to work. They told me rads was going to be easier than chemo, but even the scheduling is proving to be much more difficult!

    Hi klick, kiwi mum, vicks1960 and other newcomers -- welcome!  I just finished radiation on Friday and while I didn't have as many treatments (23) as many of you are having, I wanted you to know that other than tenderness and a bit of irritation lately in the crease under my boob when I wear a sports bra to run or ride horses, I have had no issues with rads.  I continue to use a calendula gel twice a day.

    5kidsmom -- ditto on the happy birthday and i recall someone called katehudson swore by udderly smooth cream and ended up having virtually no SEs from rads at all. 

    robyn6463 -- I can understand  your frustration regarding scheduling.  And that to me was the hardest bit about radiation.  I would commit to a work thing that was arranged to accommodate my rads appointment and then my appointment time would change.  It got better for me when I just accepted that I could not reliably schedule anything for the 5 weeks that this was going on.  Having that mindset just seemed to help.

    robyn6463—that's bad about your snippy scheduler. They don't realize that what is to them a usual routine, is to patients a very big deal, for all the reasons you mention. I always want to see a "suggestion" box on the wall at times like that.

    kk59j—sorry about the new cancer site. You sound pretty plucky. I appreciated the part about the creams, exercise and perspiring...

    llm005—I have some calendula is case I have problems. I have only just completed my first zap, but I expect that down the road I'll need something. I was interested to hear about you riding horses. My grandkids got a horse last Christmas...she's a dear and I was thinking I might try riding again. I suppose it's foolish at my age, but I used to ride and I loved it.

    klick --  Thanks for the picture!  I didn't have the opportunity (or desire) to ride as a kid.  I started 5-6 years ago and I'll be 50 next year.  My weekly lessons have helped preserve what little sanity I have left through this journey.  When I'm on a horse I'm concentrating so darned hard I can't think about anything but the moment at hand. It's a total holiday from cancer.  I don't think it is foolish to try it again -- I ride with women aged 30-69. That said, it might be best to have a few lessons to start, rather than just do it by yourself.

    Robyn6463 - that is so frustrating. I'm with you on wanting to know what's going to happen when. I mean, we're disrupting our lives for 6 weeks to do this, so some compassion would be helpful, right? I found that my radiation therapists are very accommodating to schedule changes - maybe yours will be, too. Last week I had a sick kid and I called them up to see if I could come in earlier so my husband could stay home with my daughter, and they got me in.

    I'm on #11 of 33 today and am just starting to notice my skin turn faint pink. My biggest challenge has been that my chest and arms always feel prickly, not just in the rads breast, but all over. I asked my RO about it last week and he thought it was from the change in soaps (I had switched to Ivory) but I switched back to my normal stuff and I still feel prickly. It feels even worse if my clothes are tighter to my skin, or if I'm wearing a sweater. Anyone else having the pricklies?

    Hi everyone!  Welcome newbies!  Wish I was still just pink, I am red and itchy.  RO said to use 1% hydrocortozone cream for the itchy areas.  Was 16 of 28 today, so still a ways to go.  Yikes!   It sounds like everyone is doing great.  Robyn, sorry about the scheduling frustration.  I hope you hear your schedule tomorrow.  klick, I definitely think you should take up riding again.  BC has taught me to do what makes you happy and feel good.  And never think you're too old for anything.  Have a great night everyone.

    Dawmson— i feel itchy just thinking about your prickles. Yes, I'm at Swedish, too, 8:45 AM. I've been three times…one for tattoos, one for staging (practice?). Today was my first "real" one. I'm still coming to grips with going EVERY DAY …yerrrgghh. Thank heaven for the free parking, although I'm going to try busing. Driving from West Seattle is a problem because of the Alaskan Way viaduct revisions.

    llm005—I'm encouraged by your riding experience. I will start with some lessons…I need to get my seat back. I'm 69 so need to be sensible.

    Just need to vent that my normal 1 and 1/2 hour drive took almost 2 hours today because of MORE construction! Feels like half of my route is under construction. Grrr! Guess it is better than driving in snow. On the positive side, 10 of 33 down!

    abatelik - sorry about your trip - I have a one-hour dirve - sometimes- WHEN the darn construction is not going-on. I live in the Adirondacks, so I know what you mean about no snow - so glad to be hearing rain on my cabin roof this evening as we were supposed to get snow....the night is young, though - we could be blanketed by it in the a.m. I hope tomorrow's trip is better for you.

    I have my first treatment this morning, and am anxious to get started.  I am blessed to have my treatment location less than two miles from my home.  I was able to set up a standing appt for 8:30 am throughout my 33 sessions.  End date is projected as Dec 13th.   Merry Christmas to me.  LOL.

    Hope everyone else has a great Thursday.  Supposed to be 75 here today, but raining by 6 pm and only a high of 53 tomorrow with rain.  Winter is definitely sticking it's toe in the water!

    I had my CT scan on Monday and they marked me up and all the marks they wrote on me that were not covered up with tape are already almost completely faded away Frown They were supposed to last until next Monday, when I start rads, but some of them came off with my very first shower. I swear I am not scrubbing on them or using a washcloth, but I think just the soap, my sweat, my lotion and maybe my toweling off is just taking them right off. I'm afraid that I'm going to get yelled at next Monday when I go in for my first appointment Surprised

    Natters~  anyone expecting those markers to remain viable for an entire week is a bit unrealistic (IMHO).  I had alot of markings following my CT, however, there were only three main ones they were concerned about me keeping (and being extra careful with).  Perhaps give them a call and share your dilemma, and ask what they recommend?

    Natters, I also had my CT scan on Monday. I go back next Wed. The rad tech asked me not to scrub on the tatooes, but told me not to worry about all the marker coming off as it would just rub off as clothing touches it. Quite abit has washed off in the shower- I must admit that I did not take a shower til Tues eve - I actually slept in the shirt I wore to the appt on Mon. I just could not bear to look at all the red marker on my chest - it seems so trivial compared to all the pain and scars I have endured already, but there was just something demeaning about being scribbled-on. I know it is ridiculous to think of it as demeaning - the rad onc and tech were very considerate and explained why they were drawing. I am almost over it now....almost. 

    I will be thinking of you - we can do this!

    Sher, I know exactly how you feel. I burst into tears in the changing room when I took off the gown and saw how all marked up I was, although at least they used black marker, not red. I am used to seeing myself in the mirror now but at first it was a shock, and I was even upset about it later that night and the next day. It makes me feel like a big, fat baby to cry over something so silly so it's reassuring to me that others have a similar reaction. I'm glad to hear they expect some of it to come off. Hopefully, they taped over all the important stuff. I noticed that they taped what looks like a white piece of string or something all along my lump scar - did anybody else have that?

    Sher, I understand how you feel.  I do not mind the surgical scars or the scars from the port insertion, but I plan to have my radiation tatoos removed even though they are only black dots.  For some reason, I cannot bear to look at them.

    Natters - For my CT they taped stuff over my scars...not sure what the purpose was!

    Elizabeth/Sherleta - I hate the tattoos too, but I'm relieved that they are as small as they are. I'll think about doing something to get rid of them later...maybe. Maybe not. 

    Snow mixed with rain in southern Vermont this afternoon. It's cold and damp. Ick. Not looking forward to winter. I already can't wait until spring!

    Watchfuleye, I actually called them yesterday because I could not believe that some of the marks started to fade after just one shower. The nurse I talked to said that I could try to get someone to draw over them carefully with a Sharpie but that was unlikely to stay. She just told me to pat myself dry with my towel after my shower but honestly, I think it's sweat and putting on lotion as much as bathing that's removing them. They will just might have to redo some on Monday, I guess. 

    Robyn, I will say that the only good thing about doing rads now is that most of us won't be suffering the itch and burning in any sweltering heat, right? Also, I don't mind wearing short sleeves to cover up my hairy armpit while I work out quite as much as I would in the summer heat and sun. I still haven't stopped shaving it, but I think I will tomorrow or Saturday so any little cuts are healed up for MondayUndecided

    It's cold and damp here in SW PA today, too. Ugh. But hopefully sunny (albeit cooler) this weekend. I feel like it's my last weekend of 2011 to be "normal" so I plan to get out on the water and make the most of it on my new canoe.

    I am thinking of having a decorative tattoo done over/around my lump scar, if possible. Maybe a flowering vine or koi, something that follows the curve of the scar. I'm not sure where I will be tattooed yet for rads, but maybe I can have the artist work them into the design somehow? Otherwise, I may look into having them removed, too - although I already have some little beauty marks that resemble them on my chest already, so maybe they will just look like those...

    Shirleta ..I am triple negative too....finished my 18th rad today...out of 30

    Vicks1960....know about hematomas...had one after my lumpectomy within hours of coming home...was in hospital 5 days as they had to do 2 more surgeries to stop the bleeding....yuck...so sorry you went through that too...not a nice thing....looked like a one sided Dolly Parton..

    Kay 1963...thanks for the bottle of denial...I am sprinkling it on and I love your ER quote...I am so glad to see it...am writing it in my date book.

    Watchfuleye....love the name...rads are doable....you will get through them...yes it is hard waiting to get started but then it gets to be a drag making the daily trip but it is a life giving treatment and we make the ride together. I often think of all of us doing our rides to rads. There are a nice group of women in my waiting room who I chat with..the oen before me and the one after me and the one who comes early. We call ourselves our own support group and it is really nice.

    Cold here in Boston.....

    Robin6463  ..uncalled for what you dealt with with the scheduler. You do have the right to make a comment about it to medical staff.

    Just wanted to pass on a tip to those of you just starting out. If you have sensitive skin, make sure you test any new lotions or ointments or soaps that you use BEFORE you start radiation.

    I discovered that Tom's of Maine deodorant made my underarm skin really dry so I stopped using it before my rads even started. And I think I just discovered that I'm sensitive to Ivory soap (go figure!). I had been having trouble with my skin feeling prickly and realized that it felt that way only on my arm and chest where I'd been using the Ivory. 

    It's bad enough to worry about rads causing problems and ironic when it's the other stuff instead! :)

    Dawmson,

    Good tip on checking for allergys first....I've turned up two new allergies in all this. I also can't use Ivory soap, but can use the Dove my Dr recommended. You might try that.

    29 of 33 finished. As my husband says, my underarm looks like it's done and needs to be taken out of the oven! I also found out today that sweating on the peeling underarm part is painful, but my long walk felt great!
