Pets are good therapy

i had to go to a hooded one with my old cat. really worked for me, although i scared the s...t out of him, because he startled me when i glanced at the box one day and saw these huge eyes looking at me out of the little window when i thought he was downstairs. i screamed-he pooped.

So far, so good ... no accidents in the bathroom. Yea! Thanks everyone for your advice.

still laughing ladies.. i screamed, he pooped.. THIS IS the best medicine for what ails me!!!...........3jays

Hi All: Now here's a thread for me.
Marybe: I used to have Silkys for many years but am now down to Her Yorkinesses, Lacey HST & Hailey. Lacey is now pushing 13 and Hailey is 7. The girls have been such a comfort to me on this journey.http://members.cox.net/starak/yorkiness.html
The bottom right dog in the last photo is a champion Silky, Smitten. She was my last Silky and she passed at almost 15 in 2009.

Starak, I could see all the pics EXCEPT for the last one with the silky. Please try to post again as I would love to see her. My Sydney lived to be 17 1/2.....he was not registered, but he was a good silky....I took him to a breeder and she told me he was an excellent specimin. He came from Mo to start with and I think it was a puppy mill. This one I have now, Harley, he is registered, but only because the woman I bought him from and had paid something like $600 for him was going to breed him I think......but then she sold him on Craigslist for $300 and I bought him. She said it was because he was always running away, which I will not dispute, because he does like to do that, BUT also, I do not think he is a really good silky. He has very scrawny legs and sort of a little arch in his back and he's lost the blue gray coat in the body and is pretty much the buff and redish color all over.....however, he is a very playful, loving little guy. Syndey would bite anyone and everyone....except for me. He was my best dog ever, my little buddy. I bought him as soon as my reconstruction was over and he went through everything with me. I will have to try to download a pic of him.
-
Marybe: I just pulled up the page. All the photos came up fine and this is a different computer. The last photo is of 3 dogs in front of the Christmas tree. Hailey is sitting in the back. Lacey is lying down in front on the left and the Silky, Smitten is lying down on the right. Try a Refresh and see if that helps. I used to show Silkys and very rarely breed. Smitten was not of my breeding. The last of my breeding passed at 16 in 2006. Lacey HST comes from a show breeder but is not show quality. Hailey, who is gorgeous, was part of a group of dogs I helped rescue from a puppy mill. She clearly comes from excellent bloodlines. Makes you wonder how she ended up in that situation. She was a Fostering 101 failure as it took less than a day to decide she wasn't ever leaving. She was the only foster Lacey ever accepted and now they are sisters of the heart. In any case, now her only job is to be the baby and have a wonderful life. Hailey is so grateful for every comfort and kindness. Lacey was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and DEMANDS and EXPECTS that life goes her way.

Star ... those dogs are so cute - no wonder they're royalty! Boy do those photos fit into this thread.
Barbe ... please post a picture of you dog - I would love to see him!
Haven't heard from the doctor yet, but did have a stress test today ... at least the technician didn't see anything that needed immediate attention.
-
kathleen- hope you get really good news soon!
my dd just got a bulldog puppy. she has always wanted one. she got married this summer, and looks like the girl is getting spoiled with all she ever wanted. good for her!!! she is about to get laid off from her job, so the puppy should keep her busy for a bit.
-
I was able to see the pic....definitely a Silky...their facial structure is different from the yorkie....all your dogs are beauties. Kathy...hoping for a good report.

I am so happy I saw this thread! Since my BIL double mastectomy, I have been unable to foster another pup, and I am so BUMMED! I am not confident in my ability to break up a doggie disagreement with dogs over 70 pounds with my current discomfort level (I am a BIG dog gal, my boys top over 70 pounds each). I am a rescue gal, reduced to crossposting dogs ONLY.
Pets ARE therapy. I might hurt like crazy, but I will extend my arms to pet my dogs...even if I feel like I cannot brush my dang teeth. Rescued dogs love you more than you love yourself sometimes.
Please spay/neuter your pets. Please rescue a dog before you buy one (my pure-blooded American Bulldog was scheduled to die when he was pulled from a kill shelter), you can find many for FREE. Please have patience with your new baby dog/cat. Please consider fostering for a rescue.
I am sorry if this has been said before, I am a bit new. If you want a specific breed for a specific location, please ask me. I will FIND that dog/cat for you, if I can. It is amazing how many pets get dumped for no reason. There is no end to the love of a rescue dog....I think we could all use a little unconditional love and sloppy kisses!
-
Anybody want a Yorkie?? Just kidding of course, not to mention the shotgun at the front door
When Ms. Lacey HST decides she has to go out NOW, she is not kidding. Sooo many mornings her clock goes off at 4:45 AM. Can she please wait until 5:15 AM? NO NO NO, gotta go now. This morning, it was 3:30 AM. Does she have any remorse? not a bit!! Did I mention this home runs on Yorkie Daylight Time, soon to be Yorkie Standard Time??
BTW, HST stands for Honorary Silky Terror. Lacey was my first Yorkie and was reared by Silky Terriers. I think she was forever changed by that experience.
Must say that after my BMX, the girls never left my side and cut their demands to almost nothing. They knew....

Elsa ... well said!
I love bulldogs!

He is just too precious for words!
-
My boys (GSD/Golden Retriever mutt, and American Bulldog) were so shaken up by my surgery... I am never alone now. And I mean, NEVER, lol.
Yorkie Standard Time? I'm sorry, but that is too cute for words!
knccraw423, that is just about the cutest thing I have ever seen! I want to squish him/her! (In a cuddly way, of course.) My Sammy was 10 months old (profile pic) when he came home with me...I sort of wish I had seen him as a little puppy. He is the most adorable 85 pound thing now, I can only imagine his cuteness then!
Sammy was dumped because he had outgrown his puppy cuteness, and the "owners" realized that he was going to be massive. Spread the word to everyone y'all know: Large Breed puppies are ADORABLE, but they eventually become gawky large breed adolescents, and even bigger large breed adults. Consider the size your new puppy will eventally be before you give in to the cuteness, please?
On a funny note, my boys are engaged in a "mom likes me best" battle. Last night, Jackie came over to me for cuddles, and Sam put one big paw out, and shoved him over. I know I should have been sterner, but I laughed. A lot.
Love your furkids, and let them give you tons of kisses! You can mop off later, lol!
-
barb--at least she let you know. i'm up once or twice during the night so take the buckmeister out too. otherwise, he thinks about it & about the time i get back to sleep he rings the bell.
i get to see my new grandpuppy in the morning. the bulldog puppy posted looks a bit like her, but she has one brown front leg. dd said the boys just love her, until she sneaks in their rooms and steals their toys or shoes. heh heh

grdnslve, my Emma wakes me up when she thinks it is breakfast time, today it was 4:30!, sometimes there is food in the dish and I think she just misses me. Love the story Elsa "of mom loves me best", they certainly can make you laugh even when you mean to be stern with them. I hurt my knee this week and have been on muscle relaxants, they make me sleepy so naps have been in order, Emma and Sophie take up the same positions as they did when I was in the last week of radiation, Emma above my head and Sophie behind my knees, they can be such a comfort.
-
our poodle is a real chow hound & she lets me know it is time to get up. doesn't matter if dh is up. mom is the one who is suppose to feed her. but sometimes dh feeds her. doesn't stop her from coming into the bedroom- ug, ug, ug, until i get out of bed. we've learned to ask to make sure the other one hasn't already fed the lieing little b---h.
the buckmeister continues to be very protective of me. took him with me today to see a friend. had to tell her to ignore him at first. after a few minutes he settles down & wants to be friends. just suspicious of anyone coming near me & wants to make sure they are friends apparently. she was cracking up about my 'baby'. well, i guess he is!!!
-
You guys are too funny! My cat tries to get me up by knocking everything off the nightstand - doesn't work but he keeps trying.
-
Dear kimccraw423, I know I have only myself to blame for re-enforcing Emma's early morning breakfast, but she starts with a headbutt then starts upping the anty, touching my face, touching it harder, then finally getting her claws out not so much as to mark but just to be sure she has my attention. Non pet owners, who I don't trust anyway, say lock her out of the bedroom, but then where would she and Sophie sleep, must have my furbabies with me, terribly spoiled furbabies, Karen
-
its so funny, they're ALL the same, and so aren't WE... my little chiuhauas can never tell on the weekend. my DH mur, gets up at 5am on the weekdays, but sat and sunday; the kids start fussing rouend that time.. cannot understand why it isn't time for oatmeal yet.. it takes a,little time, but they settle back down after a bit,,, yes, right beside ME, in our king size bed...hahaha 3jays

Determined little rascals aren't they?
-
Hi all, just a little survey, so I know I'm not the only one, how many of us have computer time that isn't interrupted by helpful furbabies?

I too am a firm believer that pets are the best therapy. Since my 1st dx of bc in 2000 til now, still dealing with TE;s after bmx in Oct of 2010, my pets have been there for me. I currently have four cats, Fergus a 20 lb, 12 y/o tabby, Ava, a five y/o, five lb tabby, Simba a two y/o. tabby and my latest kitty, Miss Pocono, ? age, tuxedo cat. All are rescue kitties, can you say "crazy cat lady". I also have a 2 y/o German Shepherd Dog named Phoebe and just recently returned Piper, a GSD that came to me in July as a foster dog to her furever home. Some days they are the only thing that get me out of bed. You can't ignore a hungry cat, let alone four hungry cats. All my pets know when I am having a bad day and are just there for me, They certainly make me smile with their constant antics. My 85 lb dog never pulled on the leash, jumped on me or even bumped me after my mastecomy. She is certainly a high energy, strong dog but she just knew that things were different after surgery. It is amazing how connected they are to our feelings. They wouldn't leave my room

That would exlain my double post. Ava decided to help me with my post and stepped on the keyboard before I was finished. I must be crazy but I would like to add another dog since Phoebe is missing her friend Piper. My friends are telling me to wait until I am finished with my surgeries, but at this rate I am sick of putting life on hold. I am going to check out a litter of GSD pups that are available in my area. At least I am now thinking of getting a puppy instead of the 130 lb rescue dog I went to see on Tuesday. He is beautiful but has been abused and is very big, strong and has no training. At this stage of my reconstruction, I don't have the strength or capability to care for a large untrained dog. My Phoebe really loves other animals and is very nuturing so she will be a good influence on a pup. Are there any German Shepherd lovers out there that can advise me on picking out a puppy, male or female, etc. Anyone with multiple large dogs? I enjoyed having the two dogs, people thought I was crazy, but it kept me busy and my mind off this very long reconstruction process and all the problems that go along with it.

uninterrupted computer time? what might that be?
we use to have a cat who would knock the clock off the headboard to get us up. that might be why you don't see that style of headboard anymore..........
-
Remember when your kids were little and would pull all sorts of nonsense when you were on the phone, yes, that explains the double post, thank you Ava. And all my double, missed and spelled incorrectly words, thank you Sophie, she is so fond of computer time.

Krtlvr, DOG bless you for fostering!
I have two very large "babies" right now, and have been putting off fostering a new pup (I only do large breed adult dogs) because the "getting to know you" period might be a little more than I can handle after a TE fill.
It might be too late, but for my money...do NOT get a puppy. Puppies are little, and cute, but time intensive and largely uncontrollable. They WILL eat your belongings, they WILL require you to clean up messes. A large breed adult dog known to be calm and chilled would be perfect. I crosspost dogs from all over the U.S., I would be happy to find a candidate for you.
Please feel free to friend me on Facebook (Elsa Klinert Porter) for this purpose. I work with several rescues.
In answer to your question, though... Dogs are generally territorial and aggressive to the same gender. GENERALLY. (An Alpha Female and an Alpha Male will butt heads, too.) Too many of any sex might cause issues. As a woman with one of my rescues aptly said... "Elsa, HELP! There are too many bitches in this pen!"
Bless you for wanting to foster sweetie!
-
Elsa: i used to foster, as well as breed my own dobies. i absolutelu adored the breed, and got the "troubled" one when they needed. Its' been over 10 years now, that my ortho told me "no large dogs" bc of my ms.. i really miss them.. but i do have 2 wonderful chiuahuas ; both from abused backgrounds, one blind, from malnutrition, in apuppy mill.. got them both at 6 weeks, and they are a real joy for me. with patience, and a lot of love, they're perfect for me now...
only problem i have, is my little man. all 5 lbs of him does not like anyone near me, or my room... we recently had a familiar guest from Australia, and he would herd her from the "loo" back to her room, he didn;'t want her anyone near MY room.. he tries hard to block my DH; in the morning from getting too close, but, he backs down, with just a look.. the funniest one he does, he's learned to "smile" when he's doing something wrong.. Mur and I will hold hands in the bed, he gets between uus, and butts Murs hand off, or try licking my hand, to get it off Murs.. its true... he doesn't think of me as his "mommy" he thinks im HIS period...hahahaa 3jays
-
3jays--sounds like i'm not the only one with a little man with big ideas. the buckmeister will stand on my dh back when he is trying to sleep--i think he is trying to put him in his place.
it's official...i'm in a rut. got up this morning, made coffee, and when my cup was ready i turned to go to the pc, and there was the buckmeister--waiting by the chair for me to sit down so he could help me compute. his job is official lapwarmer.
marianne--go for the puppy if you want - lots of puppies out there needing good homes. everyone that gets a responsible, good family, is keeping countless unwanted future puppies from being born. and training a puppy is so much easier than trying to 'untrain' an abused dog with behavior issues. those with the energy & time for that are true angels. it seems to me that the puppies out there are the ones at risk, due to their cuteness inspiring 'spur of the moment' decisions made by people who haven't really thought about the needs of the 'future' dog vs their lifestyle & ability. but whatever you decide, we all know there is a match out there for you.
my dh walks everyday and takes 'puppy cookies' for some of the dogs on his route. one of the dogs is on a long chain. in at least 5 years we have never seen that dog off that chain, or even anyone playing/paying attention to him. and yes we did notify animal control/humane society. nothing changed. during the winter that poor dog is still out there in the snow, hiding under the doghouse, i suppose because it's warmer. anyway, seeing dh come by on his walk is obviously the high point of that dogs day. a pat on the head, scratch on the chin & a cookie gets him through another day.
