the movie "50/50"

Hi gals, did anyone see "50/50"? Just saw it the other night --coincidentally (or not), the 2 year anniversary of my cancer free living! I thought it was amazing. It shows the heartbreak and fear, but also the boredom and the banality cancer also can bring. No pinkwashing or sappiness here. It was a bit sketchy on the realities of medical treatment (for example, he seems to go to his primary for oncology care?), but otherwise, I loved it.

Of course, I look over at the end and there is my mister, the stoic Midwestern boy from Cleveland, crying his eyes out. THAT broke my heart. I never saw him cry during the whole ordeal. I think he has bottled up so much. (His mother was dying the whole time I was in chemotherapy, and died the week before I started Herceptin.)

Anyway, I am curious to hear your thoughts and opinions.

    I haven't seen it, but now it sounds interesting. I think, though, I will have to be in the right mood to watch it...feeling like I can tackle anything so it doesn't bring me down, too much.

    I really liked it. I'm not much of a movie person but this one intrigued me. There were some very funny moments, some very intense moments, and of course a few "inappropriate" moments, but all in all a great way to spend a couple of hours.

    There were a couple of times at the beginning I thought to myself, "omg, it's too soon!" but they seemed to get to the lighter side of things quick enough that I didn't lose it. The one thing that did catch my eye was how lucky he was that he got to keep his eyebrows and eye lashes. ha! Not sure how realistic that was, but it made for a more handsome cancer patient. I'll bet he's a cutie no matter though.

    Well, I couldn't make it past the first 5 minutes. Way too soon for me to sit through. I even deleted it from my DVR.

    FYI - I still can't get through the first 5 minutes of "Hotel Rawanda". I get too emotional and the wounds are still fresh.

    Hi J. Saw it two weeks ago and you described it exactly how I felt watching it. I wasn't sure at the beginning if I was going to like it, but loved it by the end. Wonderful performances.

    I liked it. The only thing that didn't ring true to me (other than the fact that he kept his eyebrows!) was that when he went to have chemo, he sat by the same two guys each time. That looked kinda nice.....but I had chemo in a big room and it wasn't really so friendly. I'd recommend it for adults if you are a little bit removed from treatment.....I'm just about a year out from all my active treatment.

    J: Just a quick comment about the reaction of your mister . . . sounds like you've got a good one. As sad as his reaction was there's a certain sweetness to it, too. He sure had been through a lot with two of his most special ladies.

    I didn't see this movie with my husband, but wonder if the reaction would have been similar. I always said through my treatment that it was probably much harder on those around me. My guy was so strong and supportive and sweet through it all. Never did I see him break down. Maybe I should rent the movie so he can let it out.

    I saw the trailer and think I might go see it.  Would someone please message me and let me know which side of the 50/50 the main character ends up on?  I think I'm ready for either but just not sure & I want to know going into it.

    @quiche - thank you. he is a good one - i'm lucky. he will admit, he just powered through that awful time --which is perfectly normal and ok, in my book-- and now feels it a bit more. i gently suggested therapy, which he refused.

    sespebadger (interesting name, btw! it's catchy) - i agree on the eyebrows! never even thought of that. i thought the chemo suite scenes were poignant, sweet, realistic.
