Does anyone know how to cure athletes foot without takin the over the counter creams???i have it in between my pinky toe and the next to last toe only..its really making me nervous and i know how catching it is.any suggestions?????thanks
-
Grannydukes, poor you. That's an easy one though. Soak your feet in warm water and baking soda ( about 1/4 cup) for 15-20 min once per day. And, soak the infected toes in apple cider vinegar twice per day for around the same time. In 2-4 days it should clear up. Also, put baking soda in your socks before putting them on.
Hugs,
Sharon

Thank you Princess---I am not in my own house and i dont want to infect my friend but im gonna try it as soon as i go home which should be in a few days.in the meantime ill work with these products as best as i could.thanks again.hugggs K

Grannydukes, I have gotten this before at my gym. It's pretty awful. What helped me was soaking my feet daily (sometimes 2X a day) in Dr. Johnson's Foot Soap. This soap is not available in all pharmacies, but I find the generic CVS brand at our local CVS shop. Krogers (in Texas) carries the Dr. Johnson's brand. I have seen it on Amazon as well. It contains Oat Bran, Potassium Iodide, and ... mhmmm other stuff (but all natural). It not only gets rid of athlete's foot, but it helps with any toenail fungus you might have. I suspect that is because of the potassium iodide.
Hope this helps.... it's pretty awful having athlete's foot!

Princess123- Glad to hear that the magnesium is working for you. It drops me into a deep, profound sleep. I sleep 8-9 hours straight, and wake up refreshed. This was not the case a few years ago....

I've definitely benefitted from being gluten free. However, if I had the choice, I would definitely not do so. There are too many foods that I enjoy that I've had to give up!! I would give my left pinky for a croissant, but I know what it does to me, so I avoid. I have a friend who did GF because she thought it would help her lose weight. I have found that it hasn't caused any weight loss, but that it has helped me make healthier food choices, mainly because I don't have breads and wheat products to "fill me up."
However, in hindsight, if I had known that my achy joints, fatigue, mind fog, and daily diarrhea (5 years of it, thank you) could be helped by going GF, I would have done it ages ago! I was so malnourished that I had neuropathy in both feet, could not remember one day to the next, felt extremely exhausted with the most simple tasks. I feel thankful that I had a wake up call to pay more attention to myself, because I found out about the gluten allergy within 6 months of my Dx with BC. Had the BC never occurred, I would not have sought out the medical support..... so every cloud has a silver lining, eh?
-
Marrianna, I had similar symptoms. (Maybe we were separated at birth.) I remember those days of being mentally and physically drained. Gluten was sucking the life out me. When I decided to become a raw vegan, the enzymes brought me back to life. I gave up so much-- dairy, meat, fish eggs, legumes, processed foods. I credit green juices for my health . I look and feel younger than I did 10 years ago, so it was worth it. I just want to keep going in the right direction.
I'm only now starting to introduce some wild meats into my diet and cooked gluten free foods. I can't wait to flip through the recipe book Sherri mentioned and see what I can make. But, I 'm only cooking for two. If I had to make meals every day for a family of five, maybe I wouldn't so enthusiastic.
My local grocery store has a wide variety of gluten free products (i.e. breads, waffles, flours, rice pastas, wheat free oatmeal, cookies, pizza dough flour, pancake mix etc) and organic everything. Maybe you should shop online, if you don't have maybe access to enough variety.
Remember too that you work out a lot. Therefore, you are always going to be hungry. So, it's important to always have healthy really delicious snacks handy. Otherwise, thoughts of having chocolate croissants will highjack your mind when you get even a little hungry.
Thank God, at least you woke up and are taking charge of your health. Whenever I feel like not completing a set when working out, I think of your triathlons and find the strength to push through the pain. There are so many people who never wake up (or get inspired) no matter how bad their health gets. They'd rather be complacent. I always say "prayer without action is no prayer at all. It's powerless".
I know for a fact that had I not had my health problems, I would not be in good shape now. They forced me to take control and not leave my health in the hands of people who didn't have my best interest in mind. My former doctor never once asked me about my diet or took me seriously when I pointed out that certain foods were making me ill. I had to figure out what gluten sensitivity is on my own and trust that I'd get well.
I'm about to take on a major project that will affect the lives of many people and require me to have good judgement, stamina and faith. I believe everything that I went through was God's way of preparing me mentally, physically and spiritually to take on this new challenge and excel. So, I understand what you mean when you say "every cloud has a silver lining". It's true. I have that message in my tagline.
Hugs

BOOSTING IMMUNITY (FERMENTED FOODS)
Here are my notes on fermented foods.
When you include fermented foods in your diet, remember that there's a difference between "the living" and "the dead". The microbes in most fermented foods are pretty much destroyed by pasteurization or processing.
Fermentation increases the medicinal value and nutrition of foods. It's the "alive" cultured foods, particularly those high in lactic acid, that boost your immune system. They do so by helping you maintain a healthy population of micro-flora in your gut, which is important because there are so many external pollutants, allopathic medicines (especially antibiotics), and low nutrient foods that destroy life support gut bacteria.
The flora in living cultured foods form a "living shield" that covers the small intestine's inner lining and helps inhibit pathogenic organisms including unhealthy overgrowth of candida. Some ferments create antioxidants (glutathione and superoxide dismustase) that scavenge free radicals which are, of course, a cancer precursor. Here are examples of fermented foods.
Fermented soy
- miso (a soybean paste used in soups)
- natto (fermented soybeans)
- raw unpasteurized soy sauce
- tempeh (a soybean cake)
*Note: Tofu is not included because it is an unfermented soy product. ETA: Those who ER+ should only eat fermented soy occasionally.
Fermented vegetables
- kimchi (made from a variety of vegetables-daikon radish, cabbage)
- sauerkraut (fermented cabbage)
Fermented milk products
- acidophilus organic milk
- cultured butter organic milk
- koumiss (carbonated fermented milk, made from horse milk.)
- plain organic kefir
- probiotic plain organic yogurt
- young coconut kefir (dairy-free)
- coconut almond yogurt (dairy-free)
*Note: People who are lactose intolerant can often tolerate fermented dairy products, such as yogurt, kefir, etc., because they are predigested and, thus, more easily metabolized. Probiotic supplements are also available. But, they are expensive.

Best quote ever! Love it, very inspiring!

Marianne- Mother Theresa, yes?
Princess, isn't there some disagreement about soy for er+ women?
-
SAB, according to my ND and a couple of books that I checked (just to be sure) occasional natural soy foods are fine. It's the processed soy typically found in things like protein bars and shakes and soy burgers that we should always stay away from.

grannydukes, it's a fungus. I've never tried it, but try anti-fungal herbs....mild ones. What about iodine?

Kefir Inhibits Progression of Breast Cancer
A surprising effect of drinking kefir is the possibility that it slows breast cancer cell growth. A study published in the 2007 issue of the "Journal of Medicinal Food" found that kefir is beneficial in suppressing the growth of breast cancer cells in animals. In this study, kefir proved more beneficial than yogurt and pasteurized cow's milk. Studies have not been performed on humans yet, but scientists feel that this discovery is promising in the future treatment and prevention of breast cancer.

SAB- Don't know about the origins of the quote, but Princess123 used it today and it really resonated with me! It was a very timely quote.... made me reflect about more than just BC!
-
I don't know who originally came up with those exact words. I was watching John Hagee' s(sp) son Matthew preach and he said it. It's in reference to James 2:26 -For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
-
Thanks Marianne and Princess. I'm not a Christian and definitely mixed up my quotables. Here's another one to make up for my mistake (this one is from the great lady)
I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much.Mother Teresa

Just saw this I find it very interesting. I know not all believe in Dr. Mercola :
-
Welcome, vickilif, thanks for posting the article. I activated the link so folks can easily access it. I read Dr. Mercola's articles often. Those who embrace metabolic medicine generally agree with both his and Dr. Epstein's thoughts about ways to prevent breast cancer. So, don't hesitate to share articles written by either that you feel are worth discussing.

What Can You Do to Actually PREVENT Breast Cancer
While it is certainly helpful to identify cancers as soon as possible, even better would be to engage in lifestyle changes that would dramatically reduce or virtually eliminate your risk of developing breast cancer to begin with. This includes:
- Optimize your vitamin D levels. Vitamin D influences virtually every cell in your body and is one of nature's most potent cancer fighters. Vitamin D is actually able to enter cancer cells and trigger apoptosis (cell death). When JoEllen Welsh, a researcher with the State University of New York at Albany, injected a potent form of vitamin D into human breast cancer cells, half of them shriveled up and died within days. It was as effective as the toxic breast cancer drug Tamoxifen, without any of the detrimental side effects and at a tiny fraction of the cost.
If you have cancer, your vitamin D level should be between 70 and 100 ng/ml. Vitamin D works synergistically with every cancer treatment I'm aware of, with no adverse effects. - Normalize your insulin levels. A primary way to accomplish that is to avoid sugar, especially fructose, as well as grains (including organic ones). Aside from causing insulin resistance, all forms of sugar also promote cancer. Fructose, however, is clearly one of the most harmful and should be avoided as much as possible.
Also make sure to exercise regularly, especially with Peak 8, as exercise is one of the best ways to optimize your insulin levels. - Get plenty of natural vitamin A. There is evidence that vitamin A also plays a roll in helping prevent breast cancer. It's best to obtain it from vitamin A-rich foods, rather than a supplement. Your best sources are organic egg yolks, raw butter, raw whole milk, and beef or chicken liver.
Beware of using oral supplements as there's some evidence that vitamin A can negate the benefits of vitamin D. Since appropriate vitamin D levels are crucial for your health in general, not to mention cancer prevention, this means that it's essential to have the proper ratio of vitamin D to vitamin A in your body.
Ideally, you'll want to provide all the vitamin A and vitamin D substrate your body needs in such a way that your body can regulate both systems naturally. This is best done by eating colorful vegetables (for vitamin A) and by exposing your skin to safe amounts sunshine every day (for vitamin D). - Avoid exposure to xenoestrogens, such as phthalates and BPA. These chemicals mimic natural estrogen, which is a breast cancer promoter.
- Avoid charring your meats. Charcoal or flame broiled meat is linked with increased breast cancer risk. Acrylamide-a carcinogen created when starchy foods are baked, roasted or fried-has been found to increase breast cancer risk as well.
- Avoid unfermented soy products. Unfermented soy is high in plant estrogens, or phytoestrogens, also known as isoflavones. In some studies, soy appears to work in concert with human estrogen to increase breast cell proliferation, which increases the chances for mutations and cancerous cells.
- Maintain a healthy body weight. This will come naturally once you cut out sugar, fructose and grains, and start to exercise. It's important to lose excess body weight because fat produces estrogen.
- Drink a quart of organic green vegetable juice daily. Please review my juicing instructions for more detailed information
- Get plenty of high quality animal-based omega-3 fats, such as krill oil. Omega-3 deficiency is a common underlying factor for cancer.
- Take curcumin. This is the active ingredient in turmeric and in high concentrations can be very useful in the treatment of breast cancer. It shows immense therapeutic potential in preventing breast cancer metastasis. It's important to know that curcumin is generally not absorbed that well, so I've provided several absorption tips here.

OK, this is interesting, princess123. I just googled "fermented soy" and tofu was on the lists, even though it wasn't on Dr. Mercola's list. Dr. Block and Jane Plant also recommend soy milk. I am going to start cooking with tempeh - just bought some the other day.
Also, I found that Dr. Mercola really bounced back and forth on fructose - he didn't make that much of a distinction between high-fructose corn syrup and the regular fructose found in fruit. I try to limit my fruit to 2-3 per day and one of those servings is always blueberries. His recommendation of less than 15 grams of fructose per day in fruit is fairly easy if you just keep your consumption to 2-3 servings, I think. I posted something on the Stage IV alt thread about soy goods - it goes into the difference between soy estrogen and human estrogen.
These are very good tips, though. Thank you for the information.
-
If I want to reduce my estrogen naturally what would I do? Foods, herbs, What?
-
Hi, all ~ I missed the start up of this thread because I was out of town and off the computer for awhile, but I'm happy to see it now.
Grannydukes, I just wanted to add that I bought a locally-made, natural salve a few months ago in AZ that works great for the type of problem you're having. Let me know if you don't find a good remedy locally, and I'll try to get ahold of some of what I'm talking about (forget the name, but it's great for lots of troublesome fungal infections) for you.
vick, I'm a firm believer in I3C for reducing estrogen. I use it in lieu of an A/I (along with a diet very low in animal protein and dairy products diet), and my estrogen is extremely low. Deanna

Hi sweetbean,
"Most of the tofu available in supermarkets has been coagulated into its thickened, moist, cake-like form, but it has not been fermented. Pickled tofu is an exception, and it's been fermented and aged like an aged cheese. Like other fermented soy products, it makes a great addition to soups." whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=newtip&dbid=36
ETA:The isoflavones in soy milk are good for preventing cancer. However, the commercial brands usually have plenty of sugar. I think if you are going to drink soy milk, fermented soy milk is the way to go. But, I wouldn't go drinking gallons of it every day. Everything in moderation.
High-fructose corn syrup is chemically similar to table sugar (sucrose). It's found in sodas. So we don't want that. I'm like you. I have at least 3 fruits in the morning for breakfast.

Welcome back Deanna. (I like your tagline.)
vickilf, Deanna gave you some good advice. I use Calcium D Glucarate. There's also DIM. When you get a chance to try and read the previous pages. They're packed with info.

Princess, thanks! I usually have 1 cup of organic, unsweetened soy milk in my morning smoothie, ,along with protein mix, blueberries, broccoli sprouts, and 1 scoop of Amazing Grass ORAC mix. However, I was planning on adding more tempeh to my diet and decreasing the amount of soy milk - maybe alternating soy milk and ground flax seed. Both are supposed to work well with Tamoxifen and are effective against Her2+.
My diet has almost no sugar, other than that found in fruit. I rarely drink coffee (it's the only thing I really miss!) No alcohol, no meat, no dairy. I eat Ezekial bread & wraps if I am going to have bread, but I try not to do it every day. Quinoa is awesome. Right now, I am trying to find a way to make spaghetti squash not suck. (Why is it always so wet? Is there a way to make is crisper, more al dente?)
-
Sweetbean, your diet sounds great. Spaghetti squash sounds so good. Where do live? I'm coming over. I love quinoa too. I make a wicked quinoa pilaf:)
Quinoa is GOOD for the immune system!
For those you who don't know what quinoa is. It's actually the seed from a plant that is closely related to leafy green vegetables such as spinach and beets. It has recently become very popular. Quinoa is pretty rich in lysine. Lysine is one of the essential amino acids of the nine, and it plays an important role in the absorption of calcium. Quinoa is a good source of magnesium. It's also thought to be useful for boosting the immune system. Quinoa is considered to be an excellent alternative to other grain foods that contribute to the growth of candida. It's thought to be a "good bacteria" for the gut, the intestines and the colon. It's great for people who are allergic to wheat, as it is gluten free.
ETA:You can prepare salads, pilafs, puddings and porridges with quinoa. To remove any bitter taste, wash the grain with water. Once the saponins are removed, it is ready to cook.

princess123: Good thread...you must have been doing all the same research as I've been doing over the last two months. I had an inconclusive US and radiologist in North Carollina suggested an MRI, so I have an appointment with my breast specialist back in Florida tomorrow. In the meantime, I've read everything I can find about bc and how to prevent or stop its growth utilizing natural therapies.
I saw my friend die of lung cancer last year, pumped full of chemo and radiation that didn't extend her life one day, and made her a living corpse with no quality of life whatsoever. I made a promise to myself that I would do everything possible to avoid that fate, and to try and educate others about considering all of their options instead of just doing whatever their conventional doctors suggest. Now we find out that my boyfriend's sister has lung cancer (the same as our friend) and she has elected not to take chemo or radiation. Sadly, she isn't taking any steps to improve her nutrition or to detox her body although we've given her a lot of information.
Whatever my outcome is, I feel that I have educated myself about both conventional and natural therapies, and I am doing everything possible to get my body in optimal condition so that I will be able to stand a chance of fighting off any negative diagnosis if it turns out that way. I'm not a vegertarian, but I have always eaten healthy and do not have a weight problem. I too had a thyroid problem that went undiagnosed for years. I was also taking premarin for about 20 years after a total hysterectomy. My doctor told me it would protect my heart and bones.
Last year I went to a bioidentical hormone specialist who put me on a bioidentical estrogen and progestrone. I had absolutely no progestrone in my body and since it has been replaced I am sleeping better and do not have the anxiety attacks that I once had. I have since read that every woman needs to balance her estrogen with some natural progestrone which can actually protect you from bc. I am hoping that all those years of synthetic estrogen only therapy didn't cause a problem for me. He also adjusted my thyroid medication because it still wasn't quite right. My vitamin D level were very low, so I am now taking 5,000 daily and my immune function has improved dramatically. I feel amazingly good...went to a reunion last week, and everyone said I looked younger than when they saw me ten years ago.
We are trying to eat as much raw food as we can...salads, veggies and fruit. We have cut all white flour out of our diet, as well as sugar. In addition, we eat some fish and free range chicken. My son has always been a fan of the alkaline diet, so he just rolled his eyes to the heavens when I told him we were going to pursue it...finally! My boyfriend has MS and this nutrition plan is good for his disease as well.
This is all still a learning experience for me, but I truly do believe that you can prevent cancer from growing in your body by following a diet that will starve it to death!
Wishing everyone well!
-
Hi Kaara, I am so sorry about your friend. It's hard to watch someone you love not want to fight. Cancer can't live in an oxygen rich and alkaline environment. That tells us that there is alot we can do to make our bodies an inhabiltable place for it to live in.
Well, you sound like you are doing amazing. I love to hear when people are committed to adopting a healthy lifestyle. It's inspiring, especially for the newbees. The alkaline diet you are following and detoxing will surely help your boyfriend too. As you may( or may not) know, a German doctor, Dr. John Evers, helped to cure 100's of MS patients by putting them on a raw food diet. So, there is hope for your guy too.
I'm glad you like the thread and feel free to share information, give advice and ask questions. Everyone here is so nice and willing to help.
BIG HUGS
Sharon
-
Thanks Sharon: I am going to google that Dr. Evers and read about his work. My guy would do just about anything to improve his condition. He's doing well, but the disease is slowly progressing.
-
Kaara check your PM mail. I sent you the info. He needs to get on the right supplements too.
