Sentinel burn continues to "come to the surface," and my discomfort was increased this morning by a flare up of chronic back pain...I was so touched when a tech touched my hand for a moment, and another slipped one of those pink rubber bracelets saying "hope, courage, endurance" into my cubby.
Hope, courage and endurance ladies!
-
My article reads Chemo Buddies I'm Jean ( aka Gina) . Hope you enjoy, Ashley's strory made me cry she has a little girl. Im glad you all are here for me!!
-
Stay strong girls! I have 4 more left! I will be so glad, to feel "normal" again, this fatigue is awful!
-
Had my first boost today - only 7 more to go!
I had to go shopping for a new bra today - I am too sore in certain spots for the one I was wearing, not to mention that my lotions have stained it to the point where I will probably have to toss it. Settled on a sports bra that fastens up the front. I figure when this is all done I will toss it, too.
Hang in there everyone!
-
So, today according to my schedule that the rads department gave me on the first day, should have been my last reg. rad treatment and then boosts this Thu., Fri., Mon., Tue., Wed., then DONE! So I had made a comment about today being my last reg. treatment, to which the tech, said I don't think so, let me go check. According to the script my RO wrote for Rads., I won't be done till the 24th, not the 19th! They don't know why my schedule says what it does, but its wrong. I was mad beyond mad! I decided that on Friday when I see the RO we are going to chat! Once again, I am going to have to give him a piece of my mind and tell him that Friday the 21st WILL BE MY LAST DAY! He can start boosts a day early or whatever he wants. This whole experience has turned my brain to mush and then I continuously have to give the RO a piece of my mind, I don't have much left, lol. I actually got into my car and screamed as loud as I could...felt a lot better after that, I hope no one heard me. lol
-
Oh Stormy. I am so sorry. If that happened to me...arggggg. I have 6 boosts left and if they told me it would be more, you would see me on the nightly news for murder! Hang in there sweetie.
-
Give me that dog Neecee. Track him down on the web. PS, all my clothes are stained and worn. You can have them if you find me that dog.
-
STORMY, I cannot believe this is happening to you!! WTF?? You posted in here towards the beginning that the radiation people told you 25 treatments with 5 boosts, which is 30 times, so you personal proof of what you heard.
I'm getting 33 treatments, don't know how many are boosts, but I've heard 33 as the number for some women here. I may have heard my doc wrong, she told me, but I'm a little out of it. Anyhow, somehow or other they've got you down wrong from what you were told, and you've indeed wound up with 33. But looks like when you talk to the doc end of this week, I'm with you, maybe he can figure a way to double up something to at least set you free on a Friday. Oh, I would cry a river if they changed what I think is my last number. In fact, I'm a gonna ask my rads doc today, just to be sure.
Well, let us know what he says, Stormy. I think we should do an occupation of his office if he doesn't work this out for you! Always, GG
-
OK, it finally happened. It hurts. I have 2 boosts to go. The skin is not open but is bright red. I put an ice pack wrapped in a towel over it last night. It hurts to wear clothes. It hurts to wear pajamas. Would I be a wimp to ask for something for it?
-
I just came back. She gave me tylenol#3. The boosts are in the area that was already red. For those of you who remember "streaking" as in "We want the naked truth" from Nixon. I am personally protesting the "possible" war in Iran in light of recent events in my apt. (Sorry if this is TMI)
-
bedo: You are certainly not a wimp. I learned during rads that if you want help you have to scream and keep screaming until they give you what you need.
-
bedo, you are NOT a wimp! Not in the slightest! Rads is tough and personally the pain from my burns is awful. I had no trouble at all asking for pain meds. My breast is swollen, red, peeling and blistering and downright raw in places. You bet I need pain meds. Yes, clothing hurts. A lot. I have not worn a bra in well over a week and probably won't be able to for awhile. I am 8 days post rads and a loose t-shirt is all I can stand.
Stormy....I totally understand your outrage! I had the opposite problem. I was told 33 treatments at my first appointment with the RO. About my fourth week in on a routine appointment, he told me I was having 30 treatments total. Hmmmm. I asked the techs the next day, and they said they were sure he wrote the prescription for 33 treatments. The next day they said 30...but I am thinking he changed it. So I got lucky and got less than I expected. I cannot even begin to imagine what my breast would look like with those 3 other treatments. Yep time have a chat with your RO no doubt. Hang in there hon!
sab....hope,courage, and endurance. Perfect. I love it, thank you! We do manage to keep going don't we?
Hugs and love to all..........

After reading and asking I have confirmed that boosts are only done at the near end of treatment. I went in yesterday where the radiation oncologist made sharpie marks all over my breast so that they could map and take a picture for when I have boosts.
Two words of caution: (1) Make sure you are keeping track of regular radiation therapy. Sounds like a simple thing however I show that I only had 24 treatments they say 26. I had to remind them that for 2 times the machine was broken so I was told they would add them on to the end. I am gonig today with my calendar since they dont seem to believe me.
(2) If you have boost make sure you ask the doctor where/what location on the breast they are doing the boost. My tumor that was taken out was at 4 oclock. Yet as I am watching my RO he seemed to be putting an X at the 9 oclock position. I asked him and he said "tumor was at 9 oclock" I told him that please check my records as it is at 4 oclock. He did, I was right. However it leaves me slightly stressed that had I not reminded him I might have had boost in wrong location. I really like this doctor and trying to give him the benefit of the doubt that he would have confirmed after marking me with sharpie.
-
I am marking a milestone today - regular rads are done and 5 boosts start tomorrow. The tech told me I could take the tape off today and I did immediately! Surprisingly, the Sharpie marks came off with the tape!
I'm surprised by the number of us having to correct our docs. Somehow, mine missed an entire week for me although he was on vacation and I saw another doc during that time. Just shows that we are smart to pay attention and even smarter to speak up!
-
Just bought a tube of calendula cream I hope it works I am in so much pain and discomfort.
-
Have any of you discussed melatonin emulsion with your doctors?
http://www.breastcancer.org/treatment/radiation/new_research/20101004.jsp
Hoping your burns feel better soon!!!
-
CONGRATS to all of you that are finished, and I hope you all heal and feel healthy once again!
-
I haven't heard of melatonin emulsion but that study sure looks promising! I'm going to ask my doc about it tomorrow.
Just finished #2 of 33 so I'm looking for anything I can do that will help.
-
Just got home from ER. I was having terrible chest pain this afternoon and when I called my RO, he said I needed to go to the ER. Had the full cardiac work-up and ended up leaving with a prescription for percocet for inflammation pain. Everything was going so well until the boost started 3 days ago. I also have weeping open sores. Two boost left-can't wait to be done!
-
Leighsa-I am so worry that happened to you! You're almost there! Hugs.
#30 today, 5 boosts to go. It's a pretty rough road, but at least I'm starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for all your information and inspiration ladies. -
BEDO, since you're almost done, get you some lotion that has aloe for after your very last rad boost, it is a cooling ingredient. I also recall one lady laid a cold rag on her boob and just laid there. It helps to pull the heat off. Now, I spend a lot of time at home, I have some VERY old loose T-shirts, and that's ALL I wear, even when I go somewhere, it's on underneath everything. I even wear mine inside-out so no seams rub. If you got a husband, if he's like most, he'll have SOMEthing stashed away that is ridiculously old but very soft, so wear it. I also take less showers, only use Dove soap. That's all the advice I got, altho your TylCod #3 should help when it really gets to singing. The other day I put on a sweatshirt, and my soft T-shirt was shy the top by a few inches, and even that little part hurt, so I know what you mean. We all do, and it's good you're almost done, even tho it will continue to "burn" for a few days after.
ALL, after today, I have exacty two weeks to go, and this was confirmed by my rad doc's nurse when I saw the doc yesterday. They were practically forcing down my throat something to "protect" the redness I have developed, first they said some sort of cloth that will sit under the arm, and finally they just handed me some "silver" type cream to put on at nighttime. One thing's for sure, I've been so without complaint, that if something goes awry, they'll automatically give me Percocet or Vicodin! I took the latter during chemo, I was a wreck then.
Anybody else notice their redness is in the shape of a rectangle, mine has distinct outlines now and I can see where the camera focused the rads! I went out to eat last night with family, I did not realize how rude I had become, I guess "standing up" to cancer has muffled my anger. Oh, and somebody here said they screamed when they got back to their car, and the exact same day, when I got home and went down the hall, for no reason at all, I also screamed! As easy as rad seems compared to chemo, it still takes its toll, apparently. Everyone, all I can say is, we gotta quit doing this noonday suntan group effort to make ourselves attractive in a swimsuit! Hahaha. Always, Gail
-
Leighsa.....the EXACT same thing happened to me! I had terrible, unrelenting chest pain and was also told to go to the ER. After a battery of cardiac tests (normal) they sent me for a CT scan to rule out a blood clot. That was fine, except the CT scan found nodules on my thyroid. Sigh. I was told the chest pain was likely some sort of lung irritation from rads. When I saw my RO next, he denied it of course. So frustrating. It happened again 10 days later and I just stayed home and took pain meds. I knew what it was at least. Later I saw a different RO and he said it was inflammation of the lining of the lung. Pleurisy. He did say it was from rads at least. Sheesh!
Now I have had a needle biopsy for the thyroid, mixed results but cancer was listed as a possiblity. Now i see a surgeon Monday. I think he will schedule surgery to completely remove the nodules for a proper biopsy.
Oh the burn....UGH. Leisha just be careful and if it gets bigger ask your RO for some sort of help. I use Lidocaine for the pain and it helps. I mix it with Aquaphor. My burn is pretty large but slowly shrinking. I have pain meds too for this phase. I hope you get through this as painlessly as possible!
Everyone please take care, healing hugs to all of you!
-
Stormy - How distressing! I am having 33 treatments, and would be psychotic if I had any added!
Bedo - rofl. You are obsessed with the dog! I agree with dogeyed - get some aloe. It has been my best friend through all this.
cpdsry - it is very disturbing that your doc doesn't know where correct location of the tumor!
I have five boosts left, and then I'm done. One more week. Woo hoo! I can't wait to have my schedule and my life back.
-
Leighsa, Janis So sorry about your troubles. I hope it will all go away after radiation and Janis good luck with your work up, I'm wishing you the best.
Dogeyed Thanks for all your advice, I will definitely get the aloe. And you gave me an idea! Once this is all done and the redness settles down maybe I'll treat myself to an all over spray tan so I match!
NeeceeYes I am obsessed, You're in the home stretch! Isn't this great?
-
Thank you for the replys. The percocet knocked me out and I woke with the same pain. RO offered lidocaine for the open area, but I don't have any discomfort from it. Most of the breast and the entire nipple are still numb from the surgery in July. The chest pain I have is deeper and radiates through my back.
Janis, good luck with your procedure.
We are all so close to being done-one more boost on Monday for me!
Have a great weekend!
(((hugs))) -
Leighsa,
I'm so sorry you're having the lung/rib pain. I also got the same thing as Janice, and it's terrible. I'd had it as a teenager as a relapse from pneumonia. Long story short, I had two attacks of it, 11 days apart, and both the RO and my primary care doc recommended ibuprofen. 3 pills 3 times a day. My reg dr. Insisted I do at least 4 full days. I did that the second time around and it did totally knock out the inflammation. It hasn't returned. The sound you hear is me knocking on wood. Good luck to you, that inflammation is quite debilitating when it's in full force.
Side note, for burn pain I'm now using Calendula cream. Works better than Aquaphor, Miaderm or Aloe Vera for me. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Be sure it's the homeopathic version like the
Boron which is a first aid for burns treatment.
Finished 22 of 33 today. The end is almost in sight, thankfully. -
Finally took Kate's advice when I happened to see Udderly Smooth cream today in the trial size. It smells very nice and absorbs well. Have added it to my lotion and cream arsenal. Thank you KateHudson!
-
Hi Sab,
Glad you like Udderly Smooth body cream. It worked great for me. I never had blistering or peeling.
-
katehudson--Well better late than never!
-
Geez, I finally am rid of cancer, and side effects, and my back went out. Ouch! I am in pain, and I don't do pain meds. I've had this pain for a couple of weeks thinking it would go away, but it hasn't. I had back surgery, for slipped discs, many years ago, and this pain feels the same, except thank goodness it is not affecting my leg. I quit smoking a year ago, and put on 20 pounds, and this is not helping the situation. I keep trying to diet, but it hasn't worked, because I like my wine, and wine causes me to eat more. I am not obese. I went from 110 to 130 and have a small frame. I haven't called a doctor, because I keep thinking it will go away. The pain is not constant it comes and goes. I am going to see my medical oncologist Thursday, and see what he recommends. Leighsa and Janis I am sorry about your aggravation, feel better soon.
