I'm with lago - they thinned a little, but lost them almost to total extinction at about 5 weeks PFC. I still have some lashes, but the brows are almost all gone. Thank heavens my wig has bangs. No one told me how important that would be!
-
missy_111, that's very disappointing news about extensions. I wonder if it's worth looking at a different technique or getting another opinion.
EmmaC, yes I follow Carrol2's and lago's photos closely. They are inspirational. -
I lost most of my lashes and brows during my last chemo, which was July 12. But now I have them back only hoping I don't lose them again.
-
Racy - It was disappointing to hear that. They are a reputable salon, that specialize in extensions. I am going to go for a 2nd opinion.
Carrol2 - please tell me what kind of vitamins you're taking over there. Your hair is fabulous!!
-
missy_111 thank you for the compliment. I used Brian Joseph shampoo on my head during chemo, it's a local company in KC but they sell it online too. Then I used nioxin i think it was level 2, 3 part shampoo conditioner and scalp treatment, 3 weeks after my last chemo. NOw i use my regular shampoo. I started to take 5,000 mcg of biotin, folic acid and b complex 3 weeks after my last chemo. Plus I take a multi and vitamin D plus calcium. I think my hiar pretty much always grew pretty fast. I had a tough time with color regrowth when I was hilighting it blonde. Everyone's hair grows at a different rate. But no matter how fast it grows it always seems soooo slow. I stared at myself in the mirror every day waiting for the sprouts to just pop out and cover my head. I recommend you all take pics of your head once a month, even if you never post them, just for yourself, and then you will be able to clearly see the progress and you will feel more at ease.
Ocotber 5th was one year since i started chemo. I had 4 tx of TC 3 weeks apart.

Hi all...
Carroll Oct 2 was my one year since diagnosis, still have one more Herceptin to go (onc thought we would just add one more to finish out Oct) anyways the nurses in the infusion room told me yesterday that my hair looked "sassy" Ha ha I guess thats a pretty good description of this wild mess. Will try to post some pics when I have time.
-
Missy111-My hair situation is a little different. I used cold caps and kept most of my hair but it thinned in several spots and I wanted to get extensions to fill in so I went for consult . The guy is afraid if we put them in too early-I am 3 months PFC- that I may suffer from tension alopecia. So I am waiting til after the first of the year. But he did tell me that ha has placed extensions in hair as short as 3 inches
-
My lashes and brows went 6 weeks after completing TCH. The brows are coming back faster than the lashes. I do have lots of baby lashes now but way too short to try putting mascara on
-
I tried putting mascara on my sparse, short lashes and I kept getting it all over my eyelid. Pretty funny really. Gave up on that quickly!
-
carberry
june 23 was my diagnosis never thought i would still be dealing with this now

Carrol2
I usually don't post on here but I've been following this thread since I've started Chemo. I'm finally 11 days post chemo. I just wanted to say that I know your hair is not what you had or how you want it now but it does look fantastic. I like both the style and the color on you.
-
mccrimmon324 thanks for the compliment. I am trying to embrace it but I jsut feel butch.
-
Carrol2 - I think you look great too.
mccrimmon - congrats on graduating from chemo! My NP said by week 3 and 4 post chemo I'll realize that I had forgotten what it felt like to feel good. There was never a truer statement. Week 2 - okay. Week three - Ahhhh. Week four - yippee.
my brows are almost entirely gone and have been for about a week. Today I noticed definite new growth in brows and lashes. Now if only my hair would get off its ass and grow! I don't see any length yet - just a stubble, but my husband and I both think it's getting to be a darker 5 o'clock shadow. We decided to take weekly pictures as someone suggested to see more than we can tell by looking at it every day.
have a good weekend!

Here is a tip I learned from a YouTube video about putting mascara on bottom lashes, since bottom lashes are tiny anyway. It's like a toothpick but rubber on the end and spiral and you use it to clean between your teeth anyway you can put some mascara on the tip end and if you have tiny lashes you can coat them without getting mascara everywhere. I tried it and it worked for my top and lower lashes.

Hi to all! I'm new to this thread ... I just had a bmx (with TEs) on Monday, and I'm now worrying about losing my hair after just losing both my breasts ... I've been trying to read through the posts, but I'm getting a bit confused as to the best route to take ... I've also been trying to research this topic, and here's a list I've composed ... I would love to hear thoughts and/or comments ... it's truly overwhelming to me ...
1) To promote hair growth:
B vitamins, Folic Acid, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, VItamin E, Biotin
2) Supplements that restore hair and leave it healthy:
Calcium, Chromium, Potassium, Selenium, Silica, Zinc, Sulfur
3) Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner
4) Hair Treatment for hair (at home):
Combine 1 teaspoon of rosemary oil, lavender oil and basil oil with 1 tablespoon of burdock oil and aloe vera gel. This is suppose to condition your hair, make it healthier and combat hair loss.
5) Massage your scalp regularly to stimulate hair follicles.
6) Cold Caps
7) Monoxidil (Rogaine)

Went to see a comedy performance last night. I had so much fun laughing - at the comedian and at myself. My transport to and from the show was on the back of my sweetheart's motorbike.
I put make-up on and my false eyelashes and tucked my wig in my jacket so I could get my motorcylcle helmet on. Outside the theatre I put my wig on my head. My eyelashes stayed on most of the night but I felt one come unstuck near the end of the show. My sweetheart stuck it back on for me. I lost one lash somewhere on the trip home on the motorbike.
Hey, learning to laugh at myself but I felt so good. And I didn't worry one bit about anything.
-
thanks Trinity for the summary. I agree it's hard to find all of the info and this was nice to see.
lifelover - sounds like a great night. you are living your avatar!

trinity927, how you will deal with hair loss, such as whether you shave or not, how much and how soon it will fall out and how quickly it grows back are issues that each person will handle and experience in their own way.
If you are joining the thread with others starting chemo around the same time as you, that will enable you to share your experiences and knowledge with others facing the same issues. It's also worthwhile to browse through earlier chemo threads, say of the group a month ahead of you, so you can be more prepared for what will happen.
In summary, hair usually starts falling out about 2 weeks after the first treatment. Some ladies choose to cut their hair short or shave it in advance to avoid the mess and trauma of the hair fall but it's a personal choice (I didn't). You can start using Nioxin now and it may slow the rate of hair loss but it will happen.
There is also a thread on cold caps which you can read to learn about the pros and cons and ask questions. You would need to decide if you are going to use the caps before you start chemo.
Also, feel free to post on this thread at any time. The ladies here are always willing to share their knowledge and frustrations as well as a joke or two.
Good luck with your chemo and managing the hair impacts. It's not pleasant but we will get through it. -
Trinity927, just to add to my previous post, the points you listed may help with growing hair after chemo but they don't help it grow during chemo or stop most of it falling out. Though, depending on which chemo you are having you may experience some regrowth towards the end of chemo.
The cold caps are the only option that gives you a chance of keeping most of your hair. -
About cold caps... check with your oncologist first... Mine was opposed to using them, and not because they are expensive or ineffective (which is controvertial), but because cancer can recur in the scalp, and he said it was not worth the risk... I agreed, and so no cold caps for me.
-
bdavis I read about that too. Not sure if that is true but I wasn't into taking that risk either. It also sounded way too uncomfortable, $$ and a real PITA.
-
plus to do it and not have it work, which happens often from what I hear...
-
Had a pretty crappy week following an unexspected complication with my surgery on Mon, but happy to report that hair is really growing like crazy and the eyelashes and eyebrows are coming back very fast. Got to look at the bright side in life when you can find them.
-
thinking of you survivor 11.
My brows and lashes are coming back very fast, but my hair is still unmotivated. At least I have sprouts now all over my head. Gives me hope that the hair loss isn't permanent and it will pick up speed soon.
-
Just came back from seeing my college son and I think my hair is finally longer than his! LOL
-
Trinity - the visual images just gave me a good laugh. I am so glad you got out and enjoyed yourself!
-
I went topless for the first time while I was out of town this weekend. I went with my grandma to get her cell phone repaired and the cell phone technician said, "I really love your super short hair. I would never have the guts to cut my hair that short, but it looks great!"
I confessed that I wouldn't have the guts to cut my hair this short either.
Then she proceeded to tell me about her friend who died of BC 2 weeks ago...*gulp*I joined the Livestrong program at our local YMCA and it starts today. I will be going topless to that. It's harder for me to make that jump locally when I may see people that I know.
-
Pejkug3 - congratulations on going topless! I'm still waiting for my hair to grow at all, just finished chemo 2 weeks ago. Time is dragging. Just wanted to say I don't understand people who feel the need to tell you about the people they know that died of cancer as soon as you tell them you've had it. I'm not sure I was like that before but unfortunately I've learned my lesson.
-
My last day of chemo was July 19 and my hair has grown enough that I don't have to wear a wig but I do because my hair grew white. The good news is all my eyebrows and eyelashes have fully grown back.
-
I too don't know why people have to tell us about their dead friends... ummm.. not really what I want to hear... people need to think before they speak.
