So...whats for dinner?

Welcome, Lexi4! So glad you came out from behind the curtains!!!
Kay - good luck with the PS, hope you get to start rads this week! Yes, if you get started now, you'll be done before Thanksgiving...woohoo!!!!
Carrie - adding corn to chili sounds like a good idea. That little bit of sweet would add a nice balance. Gonna have to try that!
Sunday night = popcorn for dinner! Just as soon as the Pats finish off the Raiders! And the Chiefs won today, now that is a miracle!
Michelle

Hey - did anyone else notice - this thread has reached 100 pages. Wow, Laurie - look what you started.
Michelle - the chilli recipe looks great. Actually the picture of the chilli looks even better. Carrie, I'm not a big fan of beans in chilli either. I like the idea of adding some corn instead. If I stay on this thread long enough, you gals may get me back in the kitchen cooking again.
-
Hauntie - I did notice I was posting on page 99!
So when I got married (the first time) in 1968, I did know how to cook the food my parents liked. But this was my bible. It's a 3 ring binder-style and my kids messed with it badly when they were little. So I paid about $8 for a replacement from eBay. I still use it for a few faves, like pan fried chicken and the chili recipe.
-
Yes, let's keep it going!
So here is the recipe for keeping 4 kids happy back in the late 50's when there wasn't much money...
My mom made popcorn in one of these on the gas stove. She made each of us one pan full...yes, that's right...we each got our own "batch!"
And to drink, an American classic:
I think it was 5 cents a package back in those days!
And then we all settled down to watch TV:
I make mine in one of these:
And I can eat the whole thing most of the time, although I do share a bit with DH...just a bit, though!
-
Just made a grilled cheese sandwich for supper using my new bacon press, purchased at Pickety Place. I'd been looking for one forever, to use for grilled sandwiches. Works great. Thanks ladies for waiting patiently while I stood in that looooong check out line. Didn't I just say that if I hung around on this thread long enough I'd start cooking again. See, it's happening already
-
Debbie6122 - did you make the braciole and gravy today?
-
Hey Joyce, I made it until 9:00. I think I can go to bed now. I just have to finish up the last few moves on the Words with Friends game I'm playing with my cousin. Of course, my eyes are no longer at have mast and my head is no longer nodding towards my chest. Right after the game is finished, I'm going to get off the computer, lower the lights and try to get back to that sleepy place.
-
It's 9:23...I am counting down the minutes to 9:30...lol!
Sweet dreams, ladies!
-
sweet dreams to everyone. I think even I, the night owl, is heading to bed early tonight. Such a busy weekend!

I had the best day yesterday.
Years ago in the first part of the 80s i was a chefette. I wanted to be a restaurateur and my 'mentor' of sorts said i needed to learn to cook. I went and begged for a job at a local privately owned, well respected, creative, lebanese and continental restaurant. I cut tons of onions my first day and then moved up to work with David. At the time he was only 17 and was essentially running this very complicated traditional (think Julia Child and Jacque Pepin) kitchen. Within days, I was up and running with him.. we got tons of work done in our ten hours. The chef ( Don Pepe) who used to cook for Ari and Jackie Onassis said he was going to quit.. Well we said no problem - went to the owner and the next day Don Pepe was really gone. He later went to prison for dealing coke).
http://www.kcoriginals.com/chefs.asp?chefid=31
We had a blast - we had 7 specials, a soup, quiche, fish entree - etc.. 4 desserts, 4 master sauces, 25 menu items at least for lunch and 30 for dinner.. the kitchen was small and we had the run of it. I was 22 at the time and David was 17, - we were never romantically involved but as close as a married couple almost. We worked 10 hours a day, often 6 days a week non stop.. year after year. I quit do to a violent issue with another cook rather suddenly after 6 years and only saw David occasionally after that. I stayed in restaurants.. cooking at other places, managing and waitressing.. but never matched the fun or knowledge of that place (Nabil's).
After almost 30 years I dropped by David's own restaurant.. it is in a town (weston, missouri) (for luvrving) and had the best time catching up. I'll take my family there soon for brunch. He is gray now and just a bit paunchy around the waist. He said.. I can't believe you are not cooking.. you were one of the best cooks i ever met.. made me feel good. I miss him and the team we were.
He said.. I am no Nabil, I'll never be rich, .. but I never screwed anybody... and Nabil was notorious in that respect.
I might make something with this special sauce (steak diane sauce) we made with brown sauce, green peppercorns, sour cream, burgundy.. it was so good... maybe tonite.
I also found the best clothing shop I've ever seen. It was owned by a Chinese woman.. she and her sister designed all the clothes and had them made in India and China. Her shop is the only place they are sold. I bought a jacket off the sales rack. Many are made with cotton, quilted in stripes with bright vegetable, hand made dyes from India.. omg.. they were gorgeous. Once i am up and driving in a week or 2, I am going to drive up there and take photos. She doesn't have a website and clothing is not mass produced. I am so writing Vogue.. They are uniquely stylish, practical, gorgeous and artistic.

Apple - sounds like it was a very fun day! What is the name of the restaurant in Weston? We've been there for dinner a few times. The Vineyards and Avalon Cafe are two that come to mind.
Back in the early 80's, there was a restaurant in Lowell, MA called the Prince Grotto (think Prince Spaghetti). My dad took all of us there for a nice dinner after he won a big baseball world series pool. He and I had steak diane, which was prepared tableside. His birthday was in November and I invited him and his wife, and I made steak diane. The recipe I recall involved flambe - cognac, I believe. I haven't thought about steak diane in a long time!
The clothing shop sounds fascinating. I loved all the little towns that had unique shops with interesting products, especially clothes that you can't find in Mall Generica.
So glad you are getting your wheels back soon! Nothing like being grounded for months to appreciate something as simple as running to the grocery store at your own whim.

the Avalon...
he puts locally made bourbon in his recipe now. and the clothing shop is called Pacific Breeze if you happen to breeze thru... and happen to call. I am going up (it's about 30 minutes away) to take photos. Seriously, I have never seen such clothes that I loved instantly. They were pricey (out of my budget) but certainly not out of line with a mall experience.. the skirts were like 108.00. I am spoiled by a lifetime of garage sale-ing and thrift store shopping. i got a jacket for about 50 dollars which is seriously the 2nd most I've ever payed for a clothing item.
-
I hear you about clothes, although I do mall-shop. My most favorite words are 30% off the Clearance Price! I was desperate for new pants and found a $44 pair of Worthington dressy brown jeans at JC Penney for $8.97. I also found cropped khakis for $7.97. I don't do so well in thrift shops because it's so hard to find "petite" sizes. Most of the missy sizes are too long for me.

Hauntie- I just had to tell you how much i love the braciole recipe you gave me, I didnt know how long this all was going to take so i assembled it earlier this morning, and refridgerated it until it was time to cook it. I had two pieces of flank steak in the package, made mine exactly as yours is written, since DH hates raisins i made his with a stuffing of bread crumbs, celery, onions, garlic, parsley, parm and provolone cheeses- They both are almost done but i cut of a bite of your recipe and i love it with the raisins, so good!! I will def make this again. Im also serving it with mashed potatoes with some of the gravy from the braciole= saute spinach,
If any one likes spinach this is a really good recipe- I buy organic baby spinach in a large package already washed, but still wash it again.
Saute 4 cloves of chopped garlic, i large chopped shallot, saute until fragrent (dont brown the garlic) In EVOO- add i cup of white wine, cook over med-high heat untill the wine evaporates to about 1/4 cup- turn heat down and put all the spinach in pot put a lid on it, cook for 2 minutes, uncover, put on high heat and cook for another couple of minutes stiring take off heat, add a few tablespoons of butter, and tip with lots of parmesan cheese, kosher salt and pepper. I add a few tbs of lemon juice too, This really is excellent.
-
Debbie - the spinach sounds yummy. We were talking about sauteed spinach yesterday. I make mine with bacon! Take two strips of bacon and cut them into little pieces, then saute until crisp along with some shallots or onion and garlic. When the bacon is crispy, add in the spinach and stir it around for a couple of minutes then cover and cook to desired doneness. Add salt and pepper to taste. You can add a tiny bit of water if it doesn't have enough moisture to wilt.
-
Apple I love that story! please share all your knowledge with us! I love to find the unusual shops also. My dream job would be to play with clothes all day.. well i missed that calling, but my DD is living it in NY city and we have the best conversations aobut clothing and fabrics...would bore most people to death. She loves to search the side streets of Manhatten for the little boutiques. When I was teenager I would get out the sewing machine and alter all my clothes to make them different, LOL drove my mom nuts.
Debbie i love spinach done like that, and I sometimes throw in some pasta for any easy meal.
Tonight is beef stew and bisquits. Have had in the crockpot all day.

Anyone (other than Debbie) watching The Chew? It's on at 1 p.m. eastern time on ABC, and it's live. Here's a link to a recipe for a 5 minute dish with roasted cauliflower, angel hair pasta, garlic, capers and parmesan. It looked very good and it made me think of you vegetarians/non-cookers who might do something if it was really, really quick:
http://beta.abc.go.com/shows/the-chew/recipes/Michael-Symon-Angel-Hair-Cauliflower-Parmesan
It looked really good, and if I made it I would add some cooked chicken or shrimp to bump up the protein.
Carrie - my daughter started out her college "career" in fashion merchandising so she was really interested in clothing and fabrics. But alas, the other side of her brain took over and she will be graduating in December with her degree in Accounting.

I love neat clothes and have always bought them and fixed them up to fit me. my machine is temporarily broken.. just need to spend some time with it.. If you visit kc loveRVING - you have to see this place.
The lady said.. My sister and I design them then we have them made in India and China
Hauntie - that recipe is going on my winter list. it looks like it is to die for.
-
Hauntie- Just finished our dinner, and boy was it good yum yum is all i can say!!!!
Michelle- I have done my spinach that way too, i also make a spinach salad with a hot bacon dressing, i havint made it in awhile but now it will be on my mind to make this week, im kind of on a spinach kick right now, must be iron?? I was watching the chew and news broke in about amanda knox so i didnt get to finish the end, thanks for the link i will watched what i missed.
Carrie-Beef stew and bisquits sound good too, you can sure tell winter is around the cornor we are back to stews and soups and casseroles.
Im seriously thinking about driving to the DQ for a hot fudge sunday!!
-
Oohh, Debbie! I am sitting here thinking about ice cream. Luckily, there is some no-sugar-added coffee ice cream in the freezer. I really want an ice cream cone, but I'll make do with a dish. DH is working really late, not even on his way home yet and he's an hour away. So I ate leftover sausage pasta and veggies from a couple of days ago.
-
Apple - maybe next summer, around the time of the Komen walk, which is usually in early August.
-
Apple- I loved your cooking story that you shared! So nice that you were able to reconnect with him. Also, it sounds like you had a great find with the clothing. I am pretty cheap too when it comes to clothing but once a year I like to buy one article that I love regardless of price tag. If I'm lucky I follow through. I am like you and Michelle and love to find that super sale/deal. It makes wearing it all the better! I had never cooked until I was 20, and one of the chefs at the restaurant I worked at called out and the owner suggested I take off my waitress apron and put on the chef apron for the night. I told him he was nuts, I couldn't cook! I had so much fin and LOVED it. I switched to half waitress half cooking after that. In later years my husband and I actually had a seasonal place in Alton NH that we ran for two seasons. Hard, fun rewarding work. We worked 6 days a week and left our home at 5 am to return at 11 and do it again. We said at the beginning after the venture we would know if we should get married or spilt up. Thank goodness it went the way it did!
Today I had roofers here all day and still managed to get both boys down for a nap despite the noise. (two points for me!) Though it shows how tired they were from the weekend. My poor husband is loading a dump truck up with the shingles right now at almost 10 at night to save us 300 dollars. He is not a happy boy. Some thing are better in theory. Well, live and learn. I made fried pork chops and country gravy for dinner- nothing too exciting.
On a side note- did anyone watch the Big C? I am sad tonight that the season is over! Last week ended with such a bang!
Hope everyone had a great day, Michelle I hope you are resting!!
-
Apple, I loved your story too! And your clothing find. I used to work at a yarn manufacturer. We bought raw cotton and polyester and wool and then would spin something together. It was much more expensive than yarn you would usually buy to knit. It was put into fabrics or some was made into sweaters or such by designers. My boss, the owner, always shocked me because he could just look at fabric and know what it was made out of and if it was high quality or not. I also love to find a sale and fell like I am getting a good deal. I hate to pay full price. I guess I am cheap too.
Laurie, I was a big fan of the Big C. I was so upset, we got a much better deal on cable, but ended up losing showtime and I haven't seen the Big C since the summer. It was my favorite show. I have to go over to my sister's house and catch up on it.
-
Debbie6122 - I'm so glad you liked the braciole. It's something my mother made whenever she made gravy - which was quite frequently.I never understood why my friends always wanted to eat at my house on pasta night. I thought everyone had homemade gravy with braciole and all the other meats. I didn't know how lucky I was.
I just got home about 1/2 hour ago. I left at 7:15 this morning. I saw a ton of kids today, then stayed another 2 hours after school doing paperwork, ran some errands, went to my usual Monday night gir's night - I'm exhausted. This is the longest day since my PMX 6 weeks ago. I think I should head to bed.
-
Laurie - we had our roof redone right about this time last year. I asked the roofer how much weight was in the shingles and he said about 10,000 lbs! Our roof was big with lots of elevations, turrets, etc., but still. Shingles are heavy, much heavier than I thought! Your poor DH is going to be exhausted!!!
Anyone watch The Singoff? Love this show! Amazing vocal talent by all the groups!
I rested today, but starting tomorrow I am getting my butt in gear! Actually, I will go visit my mom unless it's raining. I'm sure she's ready for an excursion.
-
We're cleaning out the fridge and freezer, getting ready to go back to Florida for the winter, so it's always interesting. Tonight I made some turkey meatballs and sauce with spagetti squash. We actually like it better than pasta, very low carb. Also made a big salad with tomatoes from the garden that are making their final appearance. No bread...no dessert...but we're getting our weight back down from the cruise food!
-
Laurie- Im sorry your DH has the shingles. I hear they can be painful. Hope he gets better soon, And what is the big C? Never heard of it?
Michelle- My Hot fudge sundae was so yummy did you have your ice cream tonight? So many shows on at the same time i was switching between, the singoof, dancing with the stars, and house. Another show i love is Pan Am i love it.
-
Kaara - I love spaghetti squash...DH is not a fan. I cooked it when he was doing Atkins and he tolerated it. Every now and then, it shows up on a restaurant menu and I am always happy to see it as a pasta substitute. Another good substitute is shredded zucchini.
Debbie - you are too funny!!! The Big C is a Showtime series about a gal with Stage IV melanoma. And I did have SF coffee ice cream sprinkled with walnuts. Missing the hot fudge and whipped cream - going to have to pick some up for those late night snack attacks.
We watched The Singoff last night - love that show, one of the best for really good vocals. And House was recording. I need to try watching Pan Am again, I tried once and didn't get into it but I keep hearing good things about it so I need to record it and watch it during the day when DH is not around to make comments. I have never watched anything but snippets of Dancing With the Stars, but DH and I both love So You Think You Can Dance. There are so many reality shows these days, you gotta pick and choose!
I guess I won't go to my mom's today. What I thought were Taxol SEs are really cold symptoms. I coughed half the night away. Got up this morning and found the "good" RX cough syrup with codeine. Maybe it will make me sleepy here in a little while. I could use a nap already.
