What is considered early stage?
I was just wondering if anyone knew what stages are considered "early stage"?
I would guess most Stage I and Stage II's are early stages. But are there any Stage III cancers that would fall under that category? Just looking for whatever positive spin I can get.
Thanks, Cyndi

I think of early stage as 0 or I (maybe some stage II). I'm not trying to burst your bubble, because I myself am stage III.
I remember the day I was diagnosed. My breast surgeon did an ultrsound that showed my tumor and 2 enlarged lymph nodes. He sent me down the hall (in the breast center) to get a biopsy with a piece of paper in my hand that said " locally advanced breast cancer". My heart just sank.

According to www.womenshealth.gov 0-IIIA is considered early stage.

Thanks for the link Specialk. That is encouraging!

Well, maybe I am early stage, after all. That makes me feel a it better.
-
I've heard both early stage and locally advanced -

Dear Stage III sisters,
Dxed in 2009 I was said I'm Stage IIA, according too NCCN BreastQuidelines 2011, I'm Stage IIIA because of high nodes number .

One of my onc's used the term "early stage bc" in our initial conversation, and I actually stopped her so I could clarify what she had said. Looking back now I'm not sure if she misspoke as I don't think my stats would jive with that. Locally advanced is what I have come to accept. Not great, but not mets, so I'll take it thank you!

If you have angio-lymphatic invasion present at IIIa it's not early stage. That changes the game for IIIa folks.
I think positive attitude, outlook and spiritual connection makes early vs. advanced meaningless; at least it does for me. I hope it does for all of you too.

Wouldn't all Stage III cancers have lymphatic invasion since, by definition, Stage III A-C have lymph node involvement?

Great question as I would wonder this also. I know I had lymphatic invasion big time.
-
Angiolymphatic invasion is not the same thing as having lymph node involvement. I was bilateral, and had lymph node involvement on both sides, but had angiolymphatic invasion only on the side that was staged IIIB (other side was staged at IIA). It means the cancer has invaded the blood vessels or the lymph vessels (not the lymph nodes).
-
But wouldn't it have to have invaded the lymph vessels to get to the lymph nodes?
I am so confused!

Or some oncs use "early stage" to refer to anything that is NOT Stage IV ... I like to think of mine that way.
-
I think yes, it would invade the lymph vessels to get to the lymph nodes.
-
I looked at my path report last night and it said "lymphatic/vascular: probable lymphatic invasion present". Sounds pretty wishy-washy to me.
I am guessing that meant that they did not see it but assumed it was there because of the positive nodes?

I agree it is confusing. Angiolymphatic invasion means that there are cancer cells in the blood vessels or lymph vessels that are located in the breast tissue (including skin of breasts--that is part of inflammatory breast cancer). Node involvement means that there are cancer cells in the lymph nodes outside the breast. Although it would make sense that there would be cancer in the breast lymph vessels when there is cancer in the lymph nodes outside the breast, this isn't always the case, at least to the extent that it would show up on a pathology report.

I like to believe that we are not a stage, we are women that got a disease. The disease was removed by surgery, chemo, rads, and anything else that was thrown at us. The rest my friends is out of our control, early or not. Try not to loose sleep over these fine lines of early verses late,
just trust your docs, and live, just live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God bless you all,

I have Stage III breast cancer and my nodes are all clear. I don't have IBC but I had ILC on the skin of my left breast. That is why I'm Stage III. Mine looked like 2 tiny bug bites. This ILC is really tricky stuff!!
