Hi ladies: I talked to my cancer center nutritionist today about my vitamin D drops in a sesame oil base... she said those where fine to take. She hasn't found any issue with sesame its the soybean oil ones to stay away from..

    Hi Titan! *waves*

I see CoQ10 coming up a lot - does anyone have any info on why that is good for us BC patients?

Gma - thanks for passing that info along.  Smile

Per a nutritition presentation I attended a while ago - Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance very important for the heart and potent anti-oxidant to stimulate the immune system.  Decreased levels have been found in breast  cancer patients compared to control subjects. It has some protective effect for patients taking chemo/took chemo.

Suze35 - My acupuncturist had recommended it and MO supported me taking it in hopes of protecting my heart since I had Adriamycin as part of my chemo treatment.  There are some who believe that it should not be taken during chemo, but my MO was OK with it, but others are not.  I have been taking 100mg a day.

If Her2+ fish oil is extremely important as well as olive oil which works synergistically with Herceptin,

I have recently added Cod Liver Oil to my regime. I only take it 1x weekly, just to ensure my Vitamin A levels are intact. I suffer from night blindness, so this seems to help me. I don't want to overdo Vitamin A, as it can interfere with Vitamin D absorption and it is fat soluable so I don't want to get Vit A levels up too high. It's done wonders for my skin as well.

    Decent multivitamin

    Acidophilus

Going to ask about melatonin next week.

    Great idea for a thread!

Just curious, why are some of you avoiding copper and iron?  Seems like I read something about these a while back but can't remember what it was.  My multi has both (not much though).  Thanks!

Great idea for a thread!  As treatment changes, so should supplements.

For the time on the antihormonals with bone mets only, I was taking:

2000 units of Vitamin D - levels are monitored

    Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc

Fish Oil - preferrably Krill Oil

    Cranberry cap

    Acidophilus

I cook with Tumeric, Cumin, and Ginger but also have capsules as during the summer, we grill a lot and don't stir fry as much.

Since I will be going to chemo - Abraxane and Avastin - I will likely be looking for supplements that will compliment the new treatment and/or control whatever new se's I may experience but continue with the Vit D and Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc and Cranberry.  Of course, I list everything on the med list so if there is an issue, it can be addressed.

For the copper and iron, it is monitored like the Vit D for me and if I should need it, I will be advised to add it.

I was able to teach my oncologist something today -- he's not my regular (he's stuck in Nantucket on vacation) but was very nice as well.  He has had canker sores his whole life, as have I.  I told him to start taking Lysine every day and to heavy load the dose when he feels one coming on. I swear by it and have used it successfully for over 30 years.  It's an amino acid and very benign.

    I am on

    4000 IU vitamin D drops

    multi vitamin

iron (I was anemic post chemo)

vitamine C (to help the iron absorb)

    B complex

    Probiotic

    Biotin

Cogimax (it has silica in it for hair and nails)

    Modified Citrus Pectin

    Florecence Tea

I was wondering about omega 3's....can anyone offer solid information about the benefits and how much to take?

I am trying to avoid flax because I am ER/PR+ and that has estrogenic effects from what I read....anyone else on this?

mdg, there is another thread about flaxseed oil and flaxseed.  I was taking that for dry eye, for two years before BC.  Dr. told me to stop because it is inconclusive as to how it affects us ER+ BC patients. There is some positive evidence, studies done on mice.
