I switched on CNN last evening and Piers Morgan and guests were debating about whether the government had over-hyped the dangers of Irene.  Honestly, I found it so, so disgusting and expected that if those who had lost power, whose houses had flooded, who were stranded in the middle of flood waters, or who had lost loved ones, had had their power on so that they could watch the show, would have destroyed their TV set with all the flying objects aimed at it.

There is a nasty, uncaring mindset spreading, and it's frightening, even to those of us north of the border.

And we should disband FEMA.  Folks are, or should be, tough enough to take care of themselves when their houses are literally under water and/or mud and there's no clean drinking water or food for miles around.  *rolling eyes slowly, counter-clockwise*

And my least favorite personin the world, Eric Cantor, said sure the house would approve emergency funding for disaster support as long as they were corresponding cuts in the budget. From where!!!!!!!!!

Slightly less stressed, able to come up for air...

Welcome artsee and keep coming back.

I am almost back to normal weight - it has taken months and lots of work. Not quite back to my jeans, but will be soon. Very fit because I exercise strenuously.

I rarely follow politics these days because we all know what is going on. Obama is trying to govern and the republicans are just playing torpedo with everything he does or tries to do. What's 40 people dying when, if you shrink government more, it could be thousands, as in Katrina, right (note sarcasm)? I'm sure getting rid of those commies at the National Hurricane Center would be nice too....or, wait - red states get the hurricanes and blue states help them out. Hm. Maybe not such a good idea.

Susie, glad you enjoyed Glamis Castle.

Well jeez Athena.  It's fine to give FEMA funds to red states, but now that blue states need them it's sink or swim time.

Cantor & his cronies can just kiss my butt.

There are, I think the radio report just said, about 12 towns in VT where they have to helicopter in supplies - water especially - cuz no roads.

What do Paul and Cantor think those people should do to prepare for things like this in the future?   Stock up on freeze-dried water?

They should just move on jeez.  Dontcha know. We are outnumbered 5 to 1.  HAhahahahahaha.  That was too funny!  I have read so many inconsistencies lately it would take me all day to note them.  Just boggles the mind, the primp and lies.

I agree.  And I don't think you can get more independent, self-sufficient people, who survive REAL winters with ease, are almost self-sufficient in food.  BUT, with no electricity, which many won't have for weeks, unless you have a generator - there is NO WATER!  You can't get water out of your well without an electric PUMP!  So most folks have gallons of water on hand, but not enough to last weeks.  That's just a small part of it - if the river water has submerged fields - no food.  AND, there are all sorts of warnings, we're getting them in western MA, NOT to eat foods that have come from flooded fields.  That water came from very polluted streams, rivers, carrying goodness knows what.

A truly desperate situation.  THANK you FEMA, and all the people working to help.

30 FEMA trucks in Colchester VT - unloading MRE's, water, cots, tents for distribution.  Army Corps of Engineers will be helping to get bridges to town completely isolated.  Incredible organization - FAST - still no electricity to about 2,000,000 in northeast.  My friends in Stamford CT, a large city just got it back last yesterday.  FEMA had been co-ordinating with State officials for a long time before this catastrophe - they really are doing a yeoman's job.

Ok.  I'll stop ranting - just makes me furious when people don't understand how desperate this is  - and how self-sufficient real New Englanders areSealed

Hi Artsee!  Long time, no see!  I remember you from when you first came to BCO -- so glad to hear you're doing well!

SusieQ -- I think we are twins!  At least, our Libra halves are!  And big sister Alpal!  I used to be 5' 8" -- now 5' 7" (last I checked).  I was 125 in my twenties, 135 in my thirties, 145 in my forties -- then seemed to add about 10 pounds a year in my fifties.  Hit 192 shortly before my dx in 2007.  Not good.  Then really ballooned between mx in April and exchange in Dec 07 -- 213! Yikes!  Lost 40 pounds by summer of 2008.  Kept it off for a while, but have crept back up by 20 since then.  TMI?  Must emulate Athena!

And Sue -- wishing you many good hours with your offspring!  Both generations!

Sunflowers -- what a drag for your neighbors.

Barbara -- ice wine, ice wine, ice wine!

Uh, Bren, there are no calories in BCO B&G icewine. Mine, however, has calories but I don't care. I will give up dinner so I can have icewine.

Ladies with litties, I need help. About a month ago my Cyd developed an eye infection. Vet had her on antibiotics and eye drops twice  day. By the Grace of the Great Cat I got the pills down with not very much trouble and at first the drops were ok. Always followed both with a treat. The infections has pretty much cleared up and the vet wanted to continue with the drops until all gone. Well, for the last four days I have gone into the bathroom to find that she has "done her business" near but not in the litter box. I have no idea how to get her to stop this. I think this is her way of saying "I'm $^&^ing done with the drops. I'm going to stop giving them to her for a couple of days and see what happens. Any suggestions?? 7:00am is too early to start drinking.

Thanks everybody for making me feel welcome. You all sound like my kid of gals. You are a busy lot on here that's for sure. Can't believe how many posted since this morning. The 'Femara' group needs some teeth pulling to get posts on there. (kidding)

Suesieq- How funny your hubby just got back from St. Andrews. Mine just walked in from 'Whistling Straights', the Kohler golf course near us. I believe Kohler owns a hotel on St. Andrews. Tim also works there part time since his retirement. He retired from Law enforcement 9 years ago at 53. So this way he gets free golf on a professional course.

To all- who asked about Sun City Grand. It is the newest Sun City retirement community in Surprise Arizona. We have good friends there and we lucked out by getting a house next door to them for a month. They are snow birds from Madison Wi.

Someone is going to get a new website for their business? I assure you I'll get to know you all, but who ever you are, my daughter-in-law did mine.[ virtualartgalleryofsheboygan.com ]

Check it out. I do watercolor painting.

Yes my hair is touching my shoulders now and being a 'retired hairdresser' it's hard to keep myself from cutting it.

Guess what...I called to make my 6 month mamo apt. this morning and they told me I'm not due for a year this time. Yipee! ....or....oh no, do I really want to wait that LONG?

    Artsee

I am PURPLE GREEN with jealousy.  Have been trying to "teach myself" watercolor painting.  So far, I make great mud, or overwork with ease.  Have several books now  I love Birgit O'Connor  Watercolor Essentials - there used to be a few classes near by, but not anymore. Still, I have fun putzing along - it's my "gift" to myself to play being "arty."  Never studied or anything, but having FUN.  Thanks for the connection to your website. Sunflowers

eta: I started a "Creativity" thread - please post soome of your pictures thereSmileor here!!!!

Me too, Blue.  I am passionate about watercolor painting - and WOW, is it ever challenging.  You don't get to make "mistakes" the way you can with acryllic or oil.

Chaplain ... I'll take an ice cold diet pepsi .. oh and someone to make dinner.  All I had to make this weekend was potato salad, Tim did all the cooking.

I can't help you with Cyd, I have three dogs and no cats.  It does sound like she might be pouting a little.

    hugs,

    Bren

PS .. Barbara .. sorry to hear you had such a tough day.  Sure hope things improve for you!

artsee - yey for your graduation to one year! Definitely a milestone. I was graduated to six-month visits not long ago, and it felt as though I could finally step off the ledge and back into the window. I was no longer in the red zone.

I want wine - any wine. Still losing some of my stripes, albeit just a few less.

Well, due to all the hype here about icewine, I send dh into the saloon in whose parking lot we've been parked... and he came out to announce that they do not have icewine.  (Actually, their sign advertised "Food", so I sent him in to buy me an ice cream sandwich; but they don't have those, either.)

I should note that, according to the signs in the parking lot, the saloon just finished hosting a "TesticleFestival", whatever that is.  (I know what it is.)  And, they have the relevant drinking mugs and T-shirts marked down to historically low prices.  One sign on the (outside; I did not go in) wall of the place announced:  "Montana TenderGroin."  ??? I asked dh if it was a gay bar, and he said "No."

We are camping in an internet- , cellphone- , and electricity-free zone.  Don't be envious.  Artsee, contrary to what you suggested, my life as a retiree has not been stress-free.  I've been busier (doing more things, at least) than when I was gainfully employed; but it hasn't all been fun stuff.  Aging parents; death of a parent; division of family estate with accompanying unresolved sibling rivalries; dealing with insurance coverage on our boat, which was badly damaged in last April's tornado outbreak (it's coming along, slowly)...  All that sort of thing.  Oh, and I have my annual mammogram and re-check appt. with my BS in early October, followed 2 days later by a re-check appt. with the osteoporosis specialist (an endocrinologist) who's keeping an eye on my bones because of Arimidex.

A quick drive-by:  I'm glad to hear so many good things -- HL's slow but upward progress (sheesh -- I wouldn't have the mustard to go through that surgery; that's one reason why I'm flat on one side); the lack of damage to ducky's houses and the safe recovery of our other east-coast friends; jancie's great showing (with Jazzie's help of course) but then there are those darn glomerulations (a new word!)...Anne, I need to find that link and check out your calendar pic.  I wouldn't have had the nerve (or the body)!

Sue, I agree with lindasa about dreams.  My dreams these past 2 nights have been non-stop, like the remote control in accelerated mode.  None of them make any sense; the people in them are people I scarcely know; the scenes are places I've visited maybe once; and the situations are just bizarre.  So I don't believe any of it.  It is fascinating stuff, from a shrink's perspective; but that's about it.

Blue, I am happy to hear pooch-licking can alieviate whatever is hurting in your arm.  Maybe you're on to a new therapy, like those warm pools where they have fish that nibble on people who have psoriasis.

I'll not be able to post again for at least 3 or 4 days, and I need to sign off now to check on some campground openings and museum hours before my battery runs out.  Good to hear from y'all!

Otter!  Have you had any trout?  Hope so!

(Sounds better than "TesticleFestival" or "Montana TenderGroin" -- don't think I even want to know what those mean!)

    Glad you popped in!

As for ice wine, they also make it in British Columbia, so you might just hang a left...Smile

Blue, icewine coming up. Note Lucy, the barcat watching. Isn't the faux fur bar top nice?
