Rosemary, I adopted my kitties from a local PetSmart via a locally-owned no-kill shelter. I had a 5 or 10 minute convo with the volunteer, but didn't realize I was being interviewed until later. A lady at work informed me she had been "red flagged" by that shelter and could never adopt from there. My jaw dropped and I asked her WTH did she say to them?

The first question was how long ago did you have a pet die? For me, it had been a year. The lady at work told the volunteer it had been three days and she was tired of her kids crying about it, so she'd caved in and agreed to get them another. Of course, that was the worst answer possible!

Second question was how did this prior pet die? Birdie died after a 6 mo. battle with renal disease. The lady at work admitted that it had gotten out of the house and had promptly been hit by a car, and that their previous kitten had been squished when a stack of boxes in the garage fell on it..

     bangs their head

It probably wasn't nice to laugh, but I told her I totally understood why they wouldn't let her have one of their animals. I think you really have to screw up to flunk one of those interviews, like admit that you'd abandoned a previous pet or something.

O.K. glad that we're still going to be on this thread - I was on FB for three years and so help me it was brutal - high school friends (I am not kidding - I am 65 and HIGH SCHOOL) were "friending" me - I had personal information leaked and I had the privacy settings properly set - I also had oh let's say thousands of videos of people's grandchildren, children, pets, christmas trees, vacations, cute sayings etc. ad nauseum - also games - yikes games??? - I would so much rather read a book, go for a walk, do my volunteer work, cook a great meal to share, talk to my dog - honestly, I've even gotten rid of my cell phone (after DH passed away I really didn't have anyone else I wanted to talk to on the cell) - I guess what I am saying is that I love the friendships we have made on this thread and I have been trying to simplify my life over the last three years and FB isn't part of it for me.

I am glad they're keeping HL in the hospital another night that was one heck of a surgery and I want her to rest.

Litty??? I may have adopted a horse. DH can't get over how much more he eats than our other cat but she is between 1/2 and 2/3 his size.

Cherryl, hahahahaahaaha!  I gotta dig up a few more jokes!

    Riley, that's a hoot!

Athena, yup, big operation, but all's well that ends well!

Rosemary, I was tempted to adopt a cat (his name was Finnigan) but the 2 muts keep me busy enough.  Besides Honky Tonk Virg would be honky tonking all night long!

Rats you can't really see him in the avatar. I will try to put both cats in an avatar when they decide to get along.

Rosemary - He's gorgeous, I am so jealous but now that I live in an apartment instead of a house I can't get a cat for the dog to have as her pet any longer.

    I always thought I was a threadkiller!

Honestly, though, I think it's because I live in the Pacific Time Zone, and my evening is just starting when the rest of you go to bed. Or conversly, all the morning action happens before I wake up.

    Hi Bren!

(Waving at you from the West coast).

I sure wish I could have attended the East coast gathering, but it was just too far.

Can I feel sorry for myself?

4 sad kids and a sad husband as we were supposed to go to the Outer Banks...

Now I need to think of good hurricane weather activities.

Nope, Blue... you're not gonna be the threadkiller tonight. I'm on Mountain time, so I'm in the running.

I'm on FB, because of my BCO chemo buddies. We all made a pact (all 20 of us at the time) to "join" FB, and we formed a double-secret private group to keep our personal, chemo-buddy stuff separate from the rest of our FB lives.

You can crank down those privacy settings so nobody but your FB friends know what you're up to.  Now, you can even post stuff (updates, pics, links, etc.) so that just certain people see them and not all your other friends.  I think FB also has a new feature that allows you to keep your friend groups separated, the way they would be in regular life (BCO friends, work friends, close family, not-so-close relatives, mere acquaintances, etc.).  I don't know how that works, so I just keep my friend list fairly small.

I've trimmed my FB friend list a couple of times -- snipped off somebody who it turned out I didn't know very well, or unfriended someone who was just a "collector" (thousands of friends).  Once I unfriended someone because he/she just flat out p*ssed me off with the nasty things he/she was saying about other people. Oh. I did that twice.

I do like FB for hearing news about cousins or HS classmates (those who attended our most recent class reunion, for instance) or a handful of dear college friends I'd lost track of over the years.  The feature I like the most, though, is that private (I think it's called "closed") group thing with my chemo buddies.  We even formed a sub-group to scheme about a group wedding gift we wanted to give one of our members, but didn't want her to know about it until the last minute.

I just ignore the annoying stuff, or make it go away.  I "ignore" friend requests from people I don't know, or people I barely know or maybe met once.  (I've ignored some requests from students I had in classes I taught eons ago.)  I "block" any updates involving games (no mercy there -- you're playing Farmville?  I don't want to hear about it.)  I try to re-check my security settings every now and then, to make sure FB hasn't come up with another sneaky way to get around what I've put up already.

There.  Last post of the night (or day, for those on the other side of the planet)?  To those of you on the East Coast -- stay safe.  And, HL, stay in that hospital another day so they can take care of you. Hugs!

Ang7 ... that sucks!  When were you supposed to go?  Maybe you'll still be able to go after the hurricane goes by ... hope so.

Hi to all!  I'm guilty of not responding to everybody but it doesn't mean I don't like hearing from you all.  I sit here and nod my head a lot agreeing or laughing or commiserating but unless I have something to add or ask I don't always say anything.

That is one big hunk of handsome cat Rosemary!!

I'll probably be the threadkiller tonight ... unless the west coast folks are still here.

Fingers crossed for our east coast friends ... stay safe ... that hurricane looks wicked.  Hoping it will veer east out into the ocean!
