Hope, you can just call them or go to their site at socialsecurity.gov. All I can tell you is that certain stage III criteria DOES meet their medical requirement for eligiblity.
I think the problem you may have, is not having worked enough years to pay into it. As for short-term disability, I don't know much about that, but just give them a call :-)

There is a difference between SSI (social security income) and SSD (social security disability). Most people will not qualify for SSI because their income is too high. SSD does not have income limits but they have to rule that you are "disabled" under the guidelines of Social Security Administration. if you are denied you can appeal and that's what they expect you to do. You can appeal online or go to your local office. Most hire an attorney. The attorney will get usually between 25-35% of the back pay amount you receive. The back pay is paid from the time you applied. However, I do know people who have had a hearing before a judge and were offered half or a percentage if the back pay amount in a settlement and awarded their monthly SSD payment. A good attorney can help you navigate the system.

I had an interesting conversaton yesterday with a subcontractor who works for the insurance company that is currently paying me LTD (a company benefit, premium paid by them) until the end of my scheduled leave of absence. She said they find me a strong candidate for SSDI and want to file on my behalf (so as to reduce the amount of LTD the insurance company is paying me, of course!) but she said if you are over the age of 53, cannot perform your most recent job due to disab/limitations, the SSA considers you too old to be retrained into a new job! It makes you a stronger candidate for SSDI regardless of your stage. I was flabbergasted! Has anyone else heard of this? I checked the SSA website and did find it mentioned that the older you get the more they lean toward your inability to work after a disability, even if it is somewhat temporary.

I am a stage 3 survivor and I did receive social security disability and was approved the first time around. I am now a 7 year survivor and back to work. Criteria is that you are out of work for 6 months and mine started exactly 6 months from the time I stopped working. When going through the interview tell them about everything you are going through, not just the cancer related issues. I would also let your physician know. I'm a medical coder/biller and alot of times eligibility is determined by the physician notes sent to social security. I was lucky, my oncologist is a gifted "creative writer." You may want to also check their website, I was able to see if I was approved on the website before I received my letter. Good luck to you in treatment and with social security.

I was rejected for the second time, on the third go round you go in front of a judge. My lawyer, provided by the LTD company, said that 96% get it on the third try, but that it takes an average of 9 months before the hearing. So......I guess it's a waiting game now.

Hi Linda,
Thanks for the update. I'm going through the paperwork process right now. Sheesh, they could save SO much time and be GREENER if they would just send me the links to these forms online. For God's sakes, I filled the initial form online you would think the rest would be that way too. Would be easier for them too.
Also question for anyone that's been through this so far. I was only working very part time hours BEFORE my dx (but had already put many FT times years into SS). During tx I had to take several long term LOA's. I am back to work again, but it's just PT again. Anyone have a clue IF they approve this---do they pay retro, and then is it going forward or just a one time lump sum?
Thanks!
Sharon

pupfoster1 - Sharon,
One of the reason that I was denied the first two times was because they didn't feel that I would still be unable to work in a year, and that even if I couldn't work full time I could make $900 per month. I didn't work for many years of my adult life, I had worked part time, then about 6 years ago I went to work full time. If approved for SSDI, I would get $1500 per month from them, I guess it I can make $900, then I would not be approved for any payment, I didn't really understand what they meant by this, but that's what the paperwork said. So if you are able to work PT you might make too much money to receive benefits, and you have to be unemployed, I believe, for 6 months in order to receive benefits. I luckily worked for a company that carried STD & LTD on their employees, so I was able to get my full income until I was laid off in December, I'm still receiving the LTD, which is 2/3 of my previous salary. The LTD pays for the disability lawyer, it comes out of any back pay I'm due, since I chose not to have my LTD cut to the amount they will pay when the SSDI is granted.
I hope this wasn't too long and confusing, though I'm a little confused about the whole thing.

I am awaiting a decision from SSA. I have cancer of the chest wall, which I understand is stage IIIB, and is listed in the SS Blue Book under section 13.10-A.
First they told me they were considering my cancer a local recurrence and were waiting to see how it responded to therapy. Then when I called back a few weeks later they said they were considering it a new cancer because of some inverted interpretation of section H of the first part of the neoplastic diseases section where it says that a person is considered no longer eligible for SSDI when they have been in remission for 3 years.
I have never been on SSDI. I have a chest wall recurrence. I had a mastectomy in 1999, and now I have cancer of the chest wall of the same breast. It appears to me that I meet the listing for the condition due to having a chest wall cancer. Tumor was removed surgically, but with narrow margins (0.3 mm & 0.5 mm) and there was some DCIS in there too. Can't re-excise due to the chest wall.
I don't understand why they have to see how I do with the therapy. It doesn't say that on the listing for chest wall cancer. Also I am eligible for SSI due to income and haven't worked since April 2010. I applied for SSDI and SSI in May 2011. Got the positive biopsy done end of January 2011 and surgery late April 2011. Any advice?

Sorry I have no advice, it all confuses me! I also applied in May. I should probably call, I always check online. It sounds like they switched it to being a new cancer so you could possibly qualify, but I don't get the waiting to see how you respond to treatment, as it is while you are in treatment is when you need the ssdi! It seems you have had your 6 month waiting period, did they say when they will have an answer?

Thanks ladies,
I'm still in the process of filling out forms but from what you all have told me I'm not too hopeful that I'll get much or anything at all. I've worked since I was 16 paying in to SS, but perhaps in their eyes this is not as much of a disabilitly as let's say losing a limb, etc. For God's sakes it puts a permanent damper on the rest of your life. Not to mention all the time I had to take of during tx and recovery........ UGH, I HATE this freakin disease!

bak, i live in seattle also and i applied when i first was diagnosed as i couldn't work through treatment (almost 7 months) they turned me down, so i got a lawyer. They turned me down a second time and the lawyer filed for a court apperance or whatever the next step is. I got a letter saying it would be 9 to 15 months before i would hear from them. Wow!!! I hope you have better luck then me!

I called the social security office today and the woman said I should have an answer on or before October 4th. She said they have all the info they need right now and the decision is pending. Is this a good or bad sign? Or maybe not a sign at all!

Good news ladies,
Got the call yesterday that I was approved! I can't thank you all enough. I would never have even thought I was eligible until I saw this thread. Sucks to be here, but if I can help my family financially at least that part of all this s&#t is good.............
