Oops...i must have deleted half of my diagnostics...the nitial < 1 cm tumor, after MRI, was found to be multiple centric 4+ cm. (no sign of chest wall involvement or axillary lymphadenopathy found). The path from 1cm mass should read ER+, >90%, 3+ positive all else is the same.

Tssheps.....Welcome to the club and as always, so sorry you had to join it. It sounds as if you are receiving excellent care which is a huge plus. I know the shock you must have felt at first hearing this crappy news. I think we all pretty much had a similiar to response to hearing it. You sound very well informed and that is so important.
I find every day I am less fearful and much more interested in just getting it over with. I am waiting now for my Oncotype Test score. This will determine if I will require chemo prior to radiation. The waiting is extremely annoying. Everything prior has been pretty easy. I had a lumpectomy on July 11th and it went very smoothly. Now just waiting on test scores. I do knw that if i do not need chemo I have to have radiation, followed by five years on a hormone blocking medication.
You found the best place to get help, support, and tons and tons of great information. Everyone here is on the same boat.....and we are all here to help you with anything you need. Never hesitate to reach out and just ask!
Take great care, deep breaths, hug those kids and know you will beat this!
Best...and many hugs.....
Janis

Tssheps I echo what Janis just said. I had my lumpectomy 2 days ago and I am doing fine. Now that I have some answers I ready for treatment to kick the beast to the curb! Hang in there. You are strong and you will be just fine. This is the best place to get support and information. It has been a life saver for me. All the women here are wonderful, kind and knowledgeable. And they all care!
Hug those kids and have a great time at Skytop!
Hugs!

Welcome to all of the newbies though I'm sorry you have to join us for this reason....
I just wanted to add KRomanoFight, that you may not need a drain for your surgery. I had my lumpecteomy and sentinel node biopsy in May and I didn't need a drain. My recovery was very quick; I mainly took tylenol for the pain in the day and the pain meds they gave me the first night. I was a bit sore lying down those first two nights so I slept propped up on our couch so that my husband's movement wouldn't hurt me. (more comfy than it sounds!) Hopefully, yours will be even easier!
-
Hello everyone! Wow, isn't just sad to see so many of us on this BC boat! Welcome Tssheps but I sure wish you could be spending all your energies on those great kids and not on this microbeast we all seem to be wrestling with. My lumpectomy also went well like Janice, RJ, and Barb and no need for drains. I had a body pillow to lay on when I got home to prop me up and keep me from movement by my DH's jumpy legs. I also wore a front close cotton sports bra 24/7 for support the first few days after. This all made a real difference for me with recovery. The emotional roller coaster will start to slow down once you know your complete pathology and start to have a plan of attack in place. The hardest part for me is all the waiting......results, appointments, preps, tests, insurance snafu's, etc. So if your every in that total frustration crazy place, just stop in here and vent. We'll all help you through it and know that you will be okay. ((HUGS)) Kitty
-
I forgot about the cotton sports bra KittyGirl! I wore one 24/7 too and that really did help. I should have had one of those body pillows...that would have been awesome but I didn't think of it.
-
Thank you ladies! You have put a smile on my face! I understand I will have two drains. I picked up a post surgery camisole with drain holders on my last Dr visit. I ordered a few short sleeve button up shirts and have a body pillow from the pregnancies. If there is anything else you can think of that i may need, please feel free to chime in. I figure that the first week will be the most difficult with the drains (hope they will be ready for removal after a week) and waiting for the pathology reports. My mom just called and said she purchased a pillow for each of my children a frog for my son (he just turned 4) and a unicorn for my daughter (7 1/2) so that they can take turns lying next to me for a few minutes each day. Any idea how long takes before you can raise your arms? They have given me descriptions of small exercises to do post-op...it is a glorious day in Westfield, NJ...the humidity has passed, there is a nice breeze, beautiful blue sky with white "broken clouds" as my son would say. It's a good day! Thank you for your thoughts, prayers, advice and encouragement it is a great source of strength.
-
I am happy to read today and see so many positive responses. You guys are truly amazing. I am really happy to be a member of this great group.
Kitty, have you heard about your Oncotype score yet? I was just curious as you and I are both waiting results before treatment begins. I am so curious to know what your course of treatment will be. We were diagnosed so close together, about 10 days apart it looks like. I had my surgery July 11th. Now of course just at a standstill until that test is done.
Barb I slept on the couch for a couple of nights after surgery. I sleep on my right side always...of course the cancer is in my right breast. I could not get comfortable in bed, but if I laid on the couch in my left side and watched TV, I could doze off. Go figure!
I hope everyone is having a good day. As always, healing hugs to all of you!

Tssheps.....It sounds like you have everything well covered. It is great you have your mom nearby to help you with your recovery.
I did not have drains so cannot advise you there..just wish you good luck while you have to put up with them.
The only thng I bought prior to my surgery was a button down top. I got it at a garage sale. All I wear is T-shirts so figured that would be easier to get in and out of. I was able to raise my arms right away, although not recommended I think. It was not long before I coukld raise them though. My post op appointment was a week after surgery and he said I could do anything I wanted to. Except martial arts! My biggest problem was sleeping as I have a terrible time sleeping on my left side. That part was bad, but like I told Barb, sleeping on the couch helped for some reason. I did not buy anything special prior to surgery and really found I didn't need anything special. I just read a great book fairly quickly and that kept me out of trouble. I think you will find the recovery is really easy.
I will be thinking of you on the 20th. Keep us posted and come here often just to chat. You'll love it here!
-
Tssheps: Sounds like you've got a good handle on things so far. It helps a bit to have a good medical background, be it yourself or family members. It is, however, a surreal experience nonetheless. It does seem to get a bit less stressful when the plan is all laid out and you have a better idea what to expect - the waiting and not knowing tends to get the mind racing.
It sounds like you're in very capable hands - Best Wishes!!!
-
Tssheps: I'm not sure, but I believe some of the responses to your questions about recovery are coming from women who had lumpectomies. Obviously, the post-op restrictions and recovery are going to be more strict and take longer with BMX...
I had nipple-sparing BMX and found it most comfortable to sleep in a recliner for a few nights. Fortunately, it has electric controls within easy reach. I'm not sure I could have even reached over and pulled the lever on a manual recliner. After that, I found it easier to sleep on the couch for about a week as it seemed easier to maneuver having the back of the couch for leverage. But, everyone is different!
I was on restrictions for several weeks not to lift more than 3 pounds, no reaching, etc. My two drains were in for two weeks and my PS allows no "real" showers until the drains are out, so it was hair washing in the sink and spot showering - a pain, but you'll work out a routine that works for you! Drains have to be putting out less than a specified amount/day before removal.
As you progress you'll find other threads here more specific to whatever stage you're at be it reconstruction, hormone therapy, etc. And you'll hear that each PS seems to do things differently so don't be surprised to read things that contradict what your team is doing.
Hang in there - you can do this!!!
-
Thanks TinaT for you insights! I know a lumpectomy is much easier than a BMX and appreciate your help. I agree that there are other threads to help along each step of the way and have participated in several. It's great to get so many success stories and help with ones own concerns. Hang in there Tssheps and keep coming back whenever you need. I'll be thinking of you on the 20th. I read that there is an item called "pink pockets" you can buy online for drains that you can attach to any of your clothes. They were developed by a woman who also had drains. I almost ordered them until I found out that I was not having drains. Hugs for you and your Kids and keep strong. Your all wonderful and don't think my strength would survive without you all. Janis, no onco results yet. Wait.....wait....wait.....tick....tock..... oh good grief here I go again!
Ok, I'm good now.
Kitty
-
Kitty it looks like we wait together! I just want to know, and I am sure you feel the same. It is frustrating right now but there is nothing I can do about it. I so get the tick tock....I have said that myself more than once. We'll just have to try hard to hang in there!
Great advice Tina...somehow I had it in my head someone was having a lumpectomy. My bad! I have no experience with a mastectomy and glad Tina was able to clarify it.
Hugs to all,
Janis
-
Janis...I think you and I were answering KRomanoFight about the lumpecteomy...maybe that's where the confusion was.
-
Barb you got that right! I knew there was someone getting a lumpectomy. I got names mixed up I think. Thanks Barb.....if nothing else at least I can offer encouragement to newbies facing lumpectomy!
-
Thanks for all the advice! As I read through it seems like I may need to get some things before surgery. For the lumpectomy folks, how long before you felt like going back to work? It seems like the recovery time is pretty quick. I like the idea of the front closure sports bra, but where do you get something like that? I don't think I've seen any of them before.
Ugh, this is so exhausting, frustrating, scary and surreal. You are all amazing women, so supportive. I can't thank you enough. Hugs to all!
-
K Romano I don't work right now so really can't advise you there. I was pretty much up and running within a couple days but I think for work a week or so. Ask your doctor as he will know. Of course it depends on what kind of work you do as well.
I had no trouble finding the front closure sports bra...got mine at WalMart of all places! I was going to try a department store but thought I would try there first. They even had colored ones. I think they are Fruit of the Loom? Anyway they had a pretty decent selection. They were sold in 2 packs for $10.
Good news for me...sort of...my Navigator called today and scheduled an appointment with my MO for next Friday, the 19th. She said my Oncotype score will be in by then...finally. Almost a month wait but at least now I have a date. So I think the clock will be ticking really slowly for the next week.
Hope everyone is having a great day. Hugs to all!
Janis
-
Hi Janis and KRomano! Yes, Walmart is where I got mine and yes they are FOL, thanks Janis. They had two types, racer back and regular back. You might have to hunt through their usual mess but just look for the front hooks closure. The regular back kind are only sold as one, the racer back are two paks. The Genomic Health lab called me today to verify insurance coverage for the oncotype test. They said that if the insurance reniged on it that they have financial assistance to help pay for the entire amount. They were VERY nice and wanted to be sure that I would get the test no matter what. So hopefully my sample is on the way there and in 10-14 days I will have the results. Janis...glad you now know when yours will come back. I went back to work a week after my surgery. I do only work part-time at a university (research greenhouse lab) and have a student worker to help me for the summer. So I was basically an armchair director. I couldn't lift anything over 5lbs until my 2 week checkup. Only took pain pills for about 3 days after surgery. Hope you all have a wonderful and restful weekend!
-
Thanks kitty. I found the pink pockets in line. Bmx is scheduled for Aug. 30th I made a typo...met with PS today to go over a few more questions I had...I feel good.
-
Awesome Tssheps, keep strong, you will done fine. Kitty
-
Janis/Kitty, thanks for the info, I'll be on the lookout for the sports bras.
Janis, good luck next week with the MO and oncotype.
-
Good morning! Thanks KRomano....I hope you can find them. They are really comfortable and keep your breasts nice and compact. No jiggle LOL.
Kitty thanks, I couldn't think of the name of the racer backs. That is the kind I bought and they were very comfortable. Plus I felt better having colors! Gosh I hope you get your test back really soon Kitty. I sure know how hard this long wait is. Not a lot of fun. I have been about 10 days ahead of you with everything. I was diagnosed July 1, and had my surgery July 11. Real close. I so hope you will get those results a lot sooner. I was told Monday that mine was awaiting approval, and now my Navigator says they will be in next Friday. So maybe you will get good news soon as well.
Tssheps, I am glad to hear you are feeling good. You are lucky to have such strong family to help you through your recovery. I will be thinking of you on the 30th. Please stay here and keep us posted on all your progress. If you need to vent, you found the right place! Sending huge cyber hugs to you.
My breast cancer mentor from AngelCare is coming today to take me out to lunch. We have never met,she is a survivor and volunteers for AngelCare which is funded by the Susan G. Koman Foundation. They give out tote bags full of goodies I understand. She offered to take me to lunch and I thought that was so sweet. So a nice outing will be fun today!
I hope everyone here has a great day. Love and hugs.....
Janis
-
Have a great time Janis! I have a survivor friend and we are going to lunch on Tuesday. I am so looking forward to being able to chat/cry and hug her for her support. Luv you all and take care. Kitty
-
Thanks Kitty! It will be nice to meet someone in person who has gone through all this. She sounded so sweet on the phone. She is coming from Boise so about a 25 miles drive for her. I kind of felt bad but she was fine with it. I am sure she will ask me to choose a place for lunch and I am so clueless. I want to go somewhere inexpensive!
Kitty every day I think of you and your waiting for your score. I am just sure you will hear good news really soon. In the meantime....try to hang in there. So glad you get to go out to lunch Tuesday. Enjoy!!!
Hugs,
Janis

Okay my experience with the lumpectomy.....not too bad. I did have the drain which I absolutely hate. But I know it necessary so it is what it is. The nurses showed my daughters how to drain it and record the information before we left the hospital. I was able to shower after 24 hours and that was wonderful. Didn't get the right side too wet the first time, but it felt so nice to be refreshed. My daughter helped dry me off while I held the drain and helped me get dressed. I, too, bought the front hook sports bra. I got my at JC Penney. I also bought some button up pj's at Wal Mart. I stayed home from work all week. Probably didn't really have to but I really didn't know what to do with this drain. I don't have any button up shirts to wear to work. They are all nice pull overs or t-shirts. Planning on going back to the office Monday, although I won't be able to drive my school bus just yet. I'm planning on returning to my night job (yes I have 3 jobs) on Wednesday night. I only work there part-time so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm a cashier there and they have made sure that I will have no heavy lifting to do. Hopefully when I see my doctor Tuesday he will take the drain out.
To date I have had no pain pills except for Tylenol. Although I am wondering just how much I should be doing with my right arm since I still have a drain in it. It feels good but I don't want lymphederma either.
Hope this helps.
Hugs!
-
Your doing awesome RJ! I didn't have too much trouble with T-shirts as long as I put my left side (surgery side) in first, kept the arm down and then just pulled it over with my right arm. I agree that the shower was wonderful and made me refreshed too. Ease back into work like I did and don't rush to do any lifting until your follow up check with the doc. Your healing will go quick with the rest and eating good. I ate lots of protiens and veggies too. Your doing great! Kitty

Hi all....had a real nice lunch yesterday with a wonderful pair of mentors. Gail and Eileen, both survivors and so sweet. They brought me this great tote bag (black with pink polka dots) filled with lots and lots of useful information. It also had a wonderful, easy to understand book on breast cancer, a water bottle, a little pillow and a really pretty bracelet with pink stones and the pink ribbon alternating. SO pretty! We went to Applebee's and all had salads. When they dropped me off I sent them away with as many tomatoes and cucumbers from my garden they would take. Gail asked me to please call her Friday after I get my test results from my MO. They also both told me to call anytime for any reason. I really enjoyed making new friends.
RJ I am so happy to hear you are doing so well! The pain/discomfort shouldn't last too long. Please, please try to get some quality rest! Your schedule sounds really rough with three jobs and you do need rest! Do not forget to take care of YOU. Please.
I hope everyone has a great day. Hugs, always.

Kitty: Good idea. I'll put my right arm in first then my left. But what the heck to I do with this drain? Can I pin it to my pants, bra or what? Right now it's pinned to the front of my sports bra which makes it look like I have a third "tit". I can't go to work like that! I'd be too self-conscious! Would it be okay to pin it to the bottom of my bra? If I wear big t-shirts I ought to be able to hide it that way.
Janis: Sounds like you had a wonderful outing at Appleby's! Good food, good friends, good conversation! What else could you ask for? I think I have gained 5 lbs by eating all this food folks have brought over here. Not complaining cause it sure was good! It's been nice to be able to climb into the recliner when I get tired. Usually in the afternoon, I will settle down to watch tv and in no time I'm napping. That's okay. My body does need the rest! Not ready to push myself too hard yet.
Hugs!
-
RJ, That sounds like it would work. Great problem solving idea. Give it a try and let us know. I didn't have a drain so I really can't be sure
. I'll have the mammosite on Friday and that will stick out too, but I'm just not going to care cause it's only for 5 days of therapy. Rest, rest, rest! Janis, fantastic to have that visit! Hope you can keep in touch with the "sisters". (Hugs)! Kitty

Hi all - well here we are, Sunday already and we fly back to CA from Hawaii on the red eye tonight. Last night the anxiety started up. It has been such a wonderful reprieve from it all being here for the past week - I would never have thought it possible but I truly was able to detach from it all for a few days.
I've been keeping up with all the posts to this thread. Welcome to the latest members of our growing club. Before your Dx did you even have a clue how many women go through this ordeal? I for one was completely clueless. it's just staggering.
Tomorrow it's back to reality. Back to the office on Tuesday, MRI on Wednesday and then The Wait for the results. Right now BS is talking about lumpectomy/rads/tamoxifen but I have other masses in the breast that we only think are benign, so a mastectomy is not out of the question. The uncertainty and the waiting is the absolute pits.
Oh well, bring it on I guess. Let's roll.
