Too tired to think. My poor doctor was quite alarmed. No power yoga class today, and it will be a taxi cab ride tomorrow. The temperature clocked in at 99 on the electronic gauge at Dupont Circle. Off to find research on various things....

Thanks Barbara .. thought it was time for a change!  I wish I was closer so I could have dinner at your house.  Not even going to mention what I had.  ha!

3mons ... No goats for me!  Too much work, although I have thought about it.

    ((((Athena)))))

One of the wineries here has a herd of sheep which graze in between the vines.  Always so lovely to see them doing "their thing" -- chomping away.

Bren - are goats a lot of work?  I thought you just turned 'em loose and they took care of themselves.  Maybe it's a good thing I don't have goats, eh?

I am going to a big Art Fair-technically Art Fairs in Ann Arbor tomorow and it is supposed to be the hottest day. Then Thursday is blood tests and a MUGA scan before my onc appt next week. I guess I just figured out why I am so uptight tonight. I can't wait until I don't have to do this every 3 months.i think I have too vivid an imagination!

Rosemary .. my friend that lives in Fenton is going to the same art fair tomorrow.  What a coincidence!

E .. you have to take care of goats.  They need water and stuff like that.  I would need to stake them as well as there are gaps in my fencing.  Way too much work .. I already have 3 dogs.

Oh well, there go my dreams of a low-maintenance goat farm.  Goat's milk makes wonderful soap,by the way.

Linda .. yep, those pups need to help out more around here!

Rosemary and Bren, normally I would be going to the same Art Fairs but I just can't deal with the heat this year.

How hard can it be? Milk the goats, skim the milk, add essential oils and saponifiers, pour it into a mold, let it cure for a week or two, cut it into bar-shaped slices, wrap it in paper, store it in the fridge for a full moon-cycle, set up an internet market site, ship the soap......

    No worries! :-D

    Small world Bren.

Riverrat I may regret my decision. DH works in Ann Arbor 1 day a week so I can always retreat into the AC> I am bringing lots of water.

Some important facts about goats, according to otter:

    1) Goats are parasite magnets.  They may even be born with parasites, especially here in the South.  (I made up that last part. At least, I think I did.)

    2) Goats will eat anything you don't want them to eat, and will decline most things you’d like them to eat.  They “browse”… they don’t “graze” – so they will nibble on bushes, trees, vines, garden plants, etc., rather than grass.  If that’s okay, then, … okay.

    3) Goats will climb anything taller than they are.  They love to play “king of the hill.”  My brother-in-law used to have goats, and a few junk cars.  We were visiting him a few years ago when my step-son came in the house with a shocked look on his face.  “Do you know those goats are standing on top of your Porsche???"

    4) Goats look at confinement as their #1 challenge in life.  Put a fence around them, and they will go over, under, or through it.  I really think the only way to keep goats inside a fence is to convince them they ought to stay on the outside, and then wait a few minutes.

    Quiz at 11.  :)

Rosemary, I'm glad you have the option to retreat into the air conditioning but I hope that the weather moderates and you have a nice day.  I'm glad you're taking lots of water.  Good luck!

I raised my kids. I don't want to raise a bunch of dumb animals. I do love their meat and eggs though. I would raise chickens but their poop...ackkk

I haven't been to the Ann Arbor art fair in years...isn't that terrible? If it weren't so freaking hot and I weren't in panicked over work, I'd be tempted to play hooky and meet up with Rosemary.

(I have no AC and the attic fan I rely on to cool the house is all but useless when it's this hot, so this is turning into a really miserable week. Blech.)

My neighbor had a stinky goat next door - ended up slaughtering it - offered me some meat but I refused.  Then he got Annie - OMG - the sweetest goat ever.  She called to me every day I came home because I was the one bringing alfalfa from the barn for her to eat - she much rather have that than the grass hay.  They sold Annie to get a dog Yell

On top of that the jerk ended up with his house foreclosed on this month and he skipped town without repairing our fence that he ruined to the tune of $3500.

    For River_Rat:

http://animalbehaviour.net/JudithKBlackshaw/Chapter3d.htm:  "It has been suggested that scent urination, a ritual where a male goat urinates on  his beard, is an indicator of rank and physical condition"; and

http://fiascofarm.com/goats/behavior.htm:  "As bucks mature and go into rut, the male equivalent of heat (in the Fall), they will start peeing on their front legs and faces."

Despite everything I've said here, I really do like goats a lot.  They are smart, and friendly, and easy to handle compared to many other types of animals.

Otter, well I still think they're cute but I'm going to re-think petting them.   Do the folks at the petting zoo know about this?  I've gotta tell the grandkids about this and gross them out for a change.

But...but....HOW do they pee on their beards and faces?  Tuck their heads between their legs and take careful aim?

"Rut" - so that's what male heat is called. Some males (many?) are in a state of perpetual rut. Never knew what you called it.

Didn't we have this discussion about goat meat? I thought it was mutton, but someone corrected me and told me that's sheep. Adult sheep as opposed to lamb. Goat meat isn't really good, is it?
