I am so grateful for this thread.

Got out before 7:00 again today.  It was very breezy and absolutely beautiful.

Great that you're doing Zumba AND Yoga AND PiYo, Kari!  You go girl!  But please be sure the trainer really understands about bc and especially LE.  I overdid it one day at the athletic club I later quit, doing a routine a friend I ran into there was showing me, and I had a horrible LE flare the next day.

Well my big excitement for the day (nothing to do with exercise) is that I was out doing errands this afternoon, and they stopped traffic on the street I was on.  At first I thought it was going to be Betty Ford's funeral procession, because the church where her funeral was is on the same street.  But it wasn't.  It was Michelle Obama's motorcade whizzing by --  and they were flying!       Deanna

Deanna - I know what you mean about VIP motorcades whizzing by.  Working in the DC area, my husband and I encounter them several times/year going between Dulles Airport and DC.  They're pretty impressive, but you gotta get out of their way!

I didn't get to do my power walk yesterday evening b/c the heat and air quality was too oppressive, but I walked a bit in the morning at work and did a little work out routine inside.  Our heat wave is supposed to break this evening or tomorrow, so I'll be back pounding the pavement.

I can totally relate to the physical body not being up to the "younger" mind... I'm 51.  I can't help but feel that chemotherapy and now Tamoxifen is causing my body to feel a lot older.  I never had so many aches and pains before chemo as I do now.  I remember doing a Yoga stretch a few months after surgery and I must have pulled something b/c the pain was like a broken rib!  They did x-rays and all was well, so I vowed to take it easy after that.  Cancer humbles our bodies and minds.

Kari, no I did not take the Keflex...  I always take Probiotics with any antibiotics.  I would have taken something else,  as a 'just in case' preventative... but...  in a HUGE list of MILLIONS of antibiotics, my doctor was NOT able to come up with ONE other, antibiotic with maybe less side effects.... and a lower dose...  2000 mg...  I just refuse to do that....    and, since the scratch is healing nicely and the swelling went down, I really see no reason to take it....

Deanna, good idea to get up early to exercise...  I have been just TOO tired to get up so early.  I get up at 7 am to feed the cats and then I have to go back to bed....  I am not sleeping very well due to NIGHT FLASHES...  they seem to have gotten worse... maybe it's the HOT HOT HOT weather....

I also have never had so many aches and pains before...  I know I'm not THAT old, either...  so it must be the hormonal treatment...  UGH....

Spring, I am armed with your onc's words to take to my onc!!!!  Thank you!  Where are you going next week?

Deanna,  I won't be seeing the trainer anymore, it was only 2 visits, and the 1st visit was an "intake meeting".  The 2nd visit, I just had him show me the machines for my leg muscles and some for arm work to help with planks.  He noticed how much weaker my "at risk" left arm is during the arm exercises and I kept pressing to him about my risk of LE.  I am SOOOO careful, almost to the point of babying my arm during exercise, whereas I used to be really gung-ho in exercise.  I've lost so much muscle its really pitiful.

I attended another Piyoga class last night, boy the instructors are SO different.  This class was mostly weight-based (dumbells) Pilates and then about 20 min of Yoga - BUT I have to say I wasn't very impressed with the way this lady moved (her technique), she didn't explain well nor did she take her posture very seriously.  Thank goodness I'm smart enough to recognize and modify my own interpretations of her moves. :)

I am going to Zumba after work and then that's it as far as the gym goes until Sunday.

Harley, glad you healed and didn't have to take the Keflex!

Very cool about the motorcades!!  Theresa, YES after chemo all these aches/pains are just sucky!

On the aches & pains... Is anyone else taking Bosweilla?  It's something I learned about on another thread.  I'm on my 3rd bottle, and it really does seem to help with the joint pain.  DH is also taking it (bad knee due to old sports injuries), but it doesn't seem to be helping with that.

I wasn't quite as early getting out there this a.m., but it never got as hot today as it has been, and I easily got an hour in.

Theresa, glad you knew what I meant about the speed of a Presidential motorcade.  I guess if all the traffic is stopped for you, it's not a big deal to drive that fast, but it sure seemed exciting and made a lasting impression on me!     Deanna

Yoga number 2 for me tonight! No inversions. It was sort of sad, really. A part of the class was built around down dog, I am just going to have to get used to it. Not worth the LE flair!!

Deanne, HOW EXCITING!! Did you wave? :)

Kari, going up to NJ to visit family.... Mom's Bday though I have been hearing she is very "out of it" ... but I need to go be there. Also, my brother's family is going away for the week, so that leaves my Dad on his own essentially -- so just will be good to be around.

    Tomorrw is 45 elliptical!!!

I don't have too many aches and pains, (I am on Tam and not AI though) I think I am in denial in any case. (hehe) I get injuries and then I get better. I discovered if I inflate my bike tires properly, I can cycle without knee pain!! (I mean DOY!!! My tires were like half the pressure they were supposed to be!!)  Getting older I guess is not going to be without modifications and occasional ouchies. Still better to keep moving and pushing a little if you ask me!!!

I'm sorry about your Mom, Spring.  Is she dealing with dementia?  You may have told us in the past, but I don't recall for sure.

Just read this and thought I'd pass it along.  My DH is constantly telling me I should get a pair of these.  I think he thinks my rear end will look like the 20-something in the TV ad if I do!  And I keep telling him they look way too unstable for my post-chemo sometimes slightly off-balance issues:  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/13/can-shoes-really-tone-the-body/#   I'm thinking a couple of you (Spring? Kari?) have them, so I'm wondering if you've noticed any increased toning.    Deanna

Deanna, yes dementia (my Mom), getting worse too! ugh. Apparently, very bad days lately. Maybe in another decline. :(

The shoes, I don't have them, but my daughter does and she thinks they work out her legs a lot, haven't heard about butt!!!  I think the only help for my rear-end is "booty pop". !!! http://consumerist.com/2010/01/booty-pop-like-a-push-up-bra-for-your-butt.html  "like a push up bra for your butt" LOL!!!

seriously. if anybody has tried them let me know!!! I could use some "pop" back there!!! :)

    Spring,

sorry to hear about your Mom.

    Deanna,

what is Bosweilla?  I never heard of it.  Is it a supplement?  Where do you get it?  I have read that vitamin D can help with joint pain, oh, and magnesium helps with that, too....   Uhm...  that is why taking Epsom Salts baths also help...  it's the magnesium.

Harley, Bosweilla is an herbal supplement that's used in Aruveydic medicine (from India).  It's actually Frankencense (sp?).

And good reminder about Epsom salts.     Deanna

Deanna, nope on the shoes, my sister in law uses them though because she broke her ankle a couple of years ago and can't flex her foot in a regular sneaker so it helps with that, but she didn't say anything about the tonight benefits.  Not taking nor heard of the Bosweilla (will look into it though).

Epsom salt baths, oh good one!

Spring, sorry to hear about your mom being out of it but glad you will go up and be around for your dad.  AND NO, haha have never tried booty pops  - that makes me laugh!

Went to Zumba last night, and honestly did not have much fun...The class was beyond packed and everyone, with the exception of me and another newbie, new the moves and the instructor NEVER described what she was doing as far as the moves, it was frustrating and I just wasn't into it, but I hung in there til the end.  Finding I like dancing at home better and I like the yoga stuff better.  I did enjoy the water (aerobics) too the one time I tried it.

That would be frustrating Kari.  Hope you find a traner and class you like better.  It does take some trial and error.  May be why DVD's always work so well for me

The Epsom Salt baths really do work for me!  When I was taking Femara last year, I just had so much stiffness and achiness...  but those baths really helped me!

45 on the elliptical tonight, and I was grumbling to myself not wanting to do it, but of course, I was very glad I did it once it was over. ha!

My Osteopath says I should be soaking in Epsom Salts and I have to admit I never tried it. She calls it "Salt and soda" baths. (Baking soda is also to be added??)

Kari, I remember that happening to me when I first started with aerobics years ago. I was really into "step" classes, and finally got all the moves, then it was really fun. Sorry the instructor was not explaining anything! I have to admit, that is no fun. But good for you for still doing it!

Very sore from working out, I forgot to add that I did the round of weight machines before Zumba the other night.  Yesterday I took the day off!  Tonight will get out for a walk.

Happy Friday ALL!  Hope the weather in your part of the world is kind to you this weekend.  Cool

Thank you for the link Kari. I try to do the dry brushing daily before I take a shower. And throughout my chemo treatment I used sesame oil ---as your link  suggests ---and it felt great on my skin. I never had dry skin during chemo.

Today I did vinyasa yoga for about an hour or so and I did not like it too much.Maybe because I just did not have a geat balance in most of the poses. Also, there were some real pros in the class and I felt a bit intimidated. I love hatha. I think I am going to stick with that. I also had some soreness after my last yoga class last Sunday and I admit I was slacking off a bit during the week, but I rode my bike back and forth to work, so I had some sort of workout after all.

Wishing you all a nice weekend and great workouts!

Just checking email on the hotel computer tonight and thought I'd say, "Hi!," from Santa Fe, where we're cooling off for a few days.  Unfortunately -- in spite of considering myself reasonably athletic -- I had quite an accident on Saturday when I tripped and fell really hard.  DH & I spent most of Sat. in the ER, instead of the family reunion we were headed to when it happened.  8 stitches to close the gash on my chin, a mild concussion and jaw fractured in 2 places.  Needless to say, it's put a bit of a damper on this trip, but it honestly could have been so much worse.  We're actually having a nice time in spite of my ability to eat being a bit limited, which is a shame b'cuz the food here is so fabulous.

Anyway, hope you're all staying cool.  And please watch where you're walking (seriously)!!!    Deanna

Oh DEANNA!!! I am so sorry! your poor head/chin/jaw!! Many good thoughts and prayers for as speedy a recovery as is humany possible.

Yes, we all need to watch our steps! Thank you for the reminder.

I am visiting family so there is zero exercise, and I am eating too much food as well. Double whammy!!! Tomorrow is my Mom's 85th Bday, and we're visiting her in "the home" and bringing either ice cream or cup cakes or both. The poor dear. It is sad to see her in such a state. Ladies, if your parents are still here, LOVE THEM UP!!!

Deanna, so sorry to hear that.  Ouch, makes my head hurt hearing about it.

Spring, that is so true.  I didn't appreciate my MIL and FIL enough while they were still here.  I wish often I could tell them as I got older how much I missed them and how well their advice has served me.

My definition this week of it is too hot out is:  when I get in the car and the radio won't turn on until it cools off.

Deanna, OWIE!!!  Did you trip on something or over your own feet? :)  sorry, don't mean to make you smile cause it will hurt too much!  Seriously, I wish you a speedy recovery.  I can't even imagine.  I remember tripping last year while reporting for jury duty...SLAM right over a cement curb, I did quite a number on my knees and hands, but nothing like you're enduring.  You fractured your jaw too?  OMG!!!!!!

All of you dealing with the extreme heat, please don't overdo it.  Survivor, so smart of you to turn back home and conserve your energy, that heat is just too dangerous and draining.

Spring, you are such a sweetie, LOVE THEM UP is right!!

kmmd, love your definition of hot!

Did a yoga class last night and WOW what a difference an instructor makes.  Fantastic and tough, I couldn't do everything but I tried.  The instructor talked to me after class and gave me some tips to strengthen my arms (we talked about mastectomy and LE risk).  She's worked with patients before.  She was a ballerina, no wonder she moved like an angel and had a rockin body to show for it!

Spring, aren't vacations fun?  haha  It is hard getting back to reality after.

Went to a Piloga class, 30 minutes of Pilates with a small ball on the floor (all ab work - core work she said), owie on the neck muscles - and 30 minutes of Yoga.  Different instructor again, this one looked like a petite Jennifer Anniston, but with muscles up the wazoo!!!!!!!!!  WOW!

Needless to say, I am SORE, sore from Monday night Yoga and sore from last night...very tired this morning.  Too much office drama for me yesterday, I have a coworker that's like Jekyll and Hyde....not fun :(

Okay, new definition of hot today.  It is when your computer shuts itself off because it overheats just sitting there doing nothing in the den.   It is well ventilated.  Went to use it and it had shut itself off because it was just plain so hot in our house.  It now has its own extra special fan on it until this heat wave clears.

OMG - while I was driving today I was listening to a radio report about the 'heatwave' that's crossing the US.  I hope you are all not suffering too much - it's really hard to believe it's warm anywhere - I actually had to put heat on here last evening!!

Spring - I can identify with you and what you are experiencing with your Mum.  I had to put my Mum into a nursing home when I was having my recon surgery - I had intended that it would only be temporary but she has settled in so well there and seems more relaxed and happy I have almost decided to leave her there - but it's soooo hard to actually make the decision 'official' .  Dementia is a terrible illness.

Kmmd - it's been a slow recovery but I think I'm more or less over the worst of it although I am just so tired all the time it's ridiculous.  How have you been?

Deanna!!!  My goodness you really did it in style - you poor thing!! Be kind to yourself.

Kari - you are really keeping busy that mash up between yoga and pilates sounds interesting.  I use to love and do a lot of yoga but haven't done any for a long time now.  I never liked Pilates but it may be because the instructor of the class I went to was not good.  BTW my DD is in Seattle - she loves it, is really enjoying herself. She is getting on well where she works and making loads of new friends.  She has about another 6 weeks and then she comes home to do her final year in uni.

Hey Harley how are you doing??

Well try and keep cool - and remember to keep your fluid intake up if you are being affected by the heatwave.
