Hey all--  I saw an ENT today because of a swelling in the salivary gland under my chin-- he couldn't tell if it was a growth or a stone so he he ordered a CAT scan and a biopsy-- arrrrgh! He told me rather cheerfully that if it WAS malignant it would "be nowhere near as bad as what you've gone through already". Says he! I am trying to deal but panicking.

    Christine2000,

Gentle hugs to you.  That just sucks, even the thought of having to deal with this type of stuff again!  I guess the doc is trying to be positive but if you're anything like me, any slight thought of new cancer sends me over the edge, i CANNOT find anything positive about it either.  What you need are some prayers for your emotions... so prayers for you tonight, that you may have peace while you wait for tests, results, and that those results be BENIGN!  you've had enough already, keep us posted.

Baseball Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn recently completed treatment for parotid gland cancer (a salivary gland), and according to him it was quite doable.

HOWEVER, it's a long stretch to assume that's what you have. Twice--once on each side--I've had a swelling under my jaw in the parotid gland area. Once it occurred when I had just started chemo for bc, which freaked me out. My onc assured me it wasn't cancer. Both times it cleared up on it's own in a couple of days. I'm betting you just have an infection of some sort. Do you have any dental issues?

Ok: the ENT is a moron. period.

Now that I have that out of the way: hopefully it isn't that. I'm so sorry you're going through this,, and am praying you hear good news.

Oh, yeah, a vote from me too on the ENT being a moron. Unbelievable.

Man, I am so sorry you're facing this stress. Hope everything comes back clean. Try not to worry too much until you know what you are dealing with. (yeah, right, eh!)

Sorry you're having another scare...such is our life :(  I'm in the dental field and salivary stones are very common, we see them all the time.  Easier said than done I know but try not to stress until there is something to really stress about.  Let us know, hugs and prayers going your way.

Hey all-- so I emailed my oncologist last night and she replied that she thinks this guy is insane to order a CT scan and a biopsy-- she recommended another ENT, who I will see next week. She also said malignancy in the salivary glands is extremely rare and it is probably a stone.  So I am taking a deep breath and trying to put it out of my mind-- at least for now!

I'm so glad you got some more info and that your mind can rest a while.  I guess he's being overly cautious due to your hx. but why expose you to more rads if you don't need to.  Good luck with your new ENT.

Christine, my husband had this happen, and the doc recommended he eat something sour several times a day until it cleared up, then once a day after that. It worked within a couple of days and now he puts lemons in his water, or sucks on a sour gummy bear every day. We too were in a panic over it, and the doc assured us it was so rare that in his entire career he'd only seen cancer in salivary glands twice. Sorry, I can't remember the explanation for why our salivary glands need sour things, but apparently they do. Worth a try, anyway.

    Be well!

Thank you so much Binney-- I have been doing that and it has gotten a little better. I'll see the ENT my onc recommends on wednesday. (I was waiting for my bc biopsy results over easter weekend so I seem to have a thing for ruining my holiday weekends!)

Eating something sour makes your salivary gland squirt. So maybe that response helps break down the stone.  I am so hoping & praying the 2nd ENT knows what he is talking about!  NJ

Intellectually I know that parotid cancer is one of the most curable. But, today I think if I had to have a pap smear(rountine one) it might put me over the edge. Hope you find an answer soon & better yet, something very B9.

I have the same pain - I have seen 3 doctors, and none of them have referred me to an ENT, even though I asked to be referred.  A dentist did an x-ray and found nothing; I had an ultrasound and they found nothing.

I had breast cancer 2 years ago - so really worried it could be cancer!  I'm always worried everytime I have a pain.  Also, 3 people I worked with have had cancers in their mouth, throat, and behind tongue, so I'm even more paranoid!

I believe I need an ENT doctor to examine me, plus a CT scan?  I think a CT scan will show more than an ultrasound.

    any advice.......

Vicky-- the ENT put me on antibiotics and today (day 7) it is exactly the same. I will see him again tomorrow. He is a top guy at my hospital (NYU Langone in NYC) and I trust him. Salivary gland cancers are uncommon and salivary gland swellings are VERY common. So... I'll keep you posted--

I saw my cancer doc yesterday - she said she can't feel any swelling - so another cancer doctor examined me, and he said there is nothing wrong with me, even though the pain is getting worse.  They said since I don't have a fever, it is probably nothing.

I've been sucking on lemon drops, like the last doctor told me to do.  I'm  going to another doctor tomorrow and one on Monday.   I got a referral to an ENT, but it could be a month, since they are booked solid.  I am in pain, and there is a reason I'm in pain.  I hate it when the cancer doctors look at me, like I'm making it up!   I demanded a referral to an ENT; they didn't want to refer me, but I really don't care; I need some answers.

I'm glad you demanded to see an ENT!  It's too bad that we sometimes have to be a pain in the *ss but we can't be complacent when we know that something is wrong.  And pain is wrong!
