Well, girlfriends, I went on vacation this week AND took DH with us.  With his condition, it takes a lot of planning and effort to get him there, but it was worth it.  First of all, our vacation options are limited.  I'm most comfortable with getting a place within an hour or two of the house, so that I can get him home quickly if needed.  I also need to pack and take along his oxygen tank (it's cumbersome and weighs about 30lbs (I think) and a plethora of medications and health aids (urinal, ugh).

What I opted for was a cabin at a campground near the Gettysburg battlefields.  It was only one bedroom because the bigger handicapped accessible cabins were already booked, but it worked out okay.  We managed to make smores, see the battlefields and catch a movie and a few nice dinners together.  It felt so good to hear my eight year old say that he appreciated the family time.

I have to share with you all that of all the things I've done in life, I'm most proud of me and my family and how we've dealt with these health blows and their aftermath in the last eight years.  I'm especially proud of my boys.  They are learning that life has it's difficult challenges, and that they can respond with humor, grief, determination and grit to address it.  Lastly, I'm so grateful to still be doing well.  I know that things by now could be a lot worse than they are, and that they could surely change at any time, so I'll take today and all that it gives us.

I'm so thankful for you all, too!  The kindness, humor, well wishes and support here are worth all the therapy the world can offer.

I hope today finds all my Cyber sisters doing great!

Bobbie - your vacation sounds wonderful.  And.......I am so glad that you were able to take DH with you and have a great time with your family enjoying the sites, smores and movies.  Family is what keeps us going.

Yay for vacations!! We went through Gettysburg a few years ago, it was fascinating.

So happy to hear you are still able to have good, quality family time. As Jenn said, that is really what it is all about.

Bobbie, you're a woman of my own heart, the fact that you saw to it that your family had a vacation this summer under the circumstance is so impressive.  I'm so happy you got this time with them and it will be something your boys will remember always.   I'm so proud to call you my cyber sister.  I am woman...hear me roar!  : )

    Bobbie, I love it.

I think I am coming to terms with the idea that no one passes through this life free from suffering. We all suffer, somehow, some way. It's a part of life. We have choices on how we embrace it.

We can sit home with oxygen tanks, or we can choose to say "Climb aboard gang, load the urinal, we are going for a ride!"

It takes a lot of spirit to do what you did! Thank you for sharing this with us, very thrilling.

Geewhiz, that is soooo funny, and so true!  Actually, I forgot to add the best line from the trip.  As we were going down the highway, I say to my Hubby, "Do you want the good news or the bad news?  The good news is, I remembered your emergency seizure meds.  The bad news is, the only one I remembered was the rectally administered one!"  We are all still laughing over that one!

Bobbie, you definitely have spunk! What an appropriate screen name. It was great to hear about your vacation and the good times. I firmly believe that you don't have to go far to get away from it all...just making it all about family does it. I'm glad the kids appreciated it, too.

Catching up after my own vacation.

Bobby - That had to be a lot of work on your part to pull it all together.  But it sounds like the rewards were well worth it!  What a strong family you have!  Those boys are going to turn into wonderful adults because of what you and your husband have taught them.

I hope you have many, many more family vacations that are every bit as enjoyable!
