I had no idea about the chemo - truly incredible.

As for mandatory campaign contributions - that should be outlawed. But then there is a lot wrong with our campaign contribution system. More so now thanks to the Supreme Court. It makes me sick to think that we may have billion dollar campaigns very soon.

    How right you are, Apple!

I just loved Betty Ford.  And in addition to everything she did for people with breast cancer, and for openness about and treatment of addiction -- she danced with the Martha Graham Dance Company!  That is way up there in the annals of "professional accomplishments of First Ladies" in my book!

« NEA Passes Teacher-Evaluation Policy, With a Catch-22 on Test Scores | Main | True and False on NEA's New Evaluation Policy »

NEA's Delegates Approve Obama Endorsement, Dues Increase By Stephen Sawchuk on July 4, 2011 2:19 PM | 10 Comments | Recommend Despite a lot of hand-wringing, delegates to the National Education Association's Representative Assembly approved an early endorsement for President Barack Obama, and by a good margin: 5,414 delegates, or 72.04 percent, voted in favor, according to results that were just released here.It looks like I was right after all. (The measure required a 58 percent "yes" vote in order to pass.)The approval triggers the flow of NEA PAC dollars toward Obama's re-election campaign. And that's not all: 70.1 percent of the body, or 5,258 delegates, approved the amendment to the bylaws that authorize the $10-per-member annual assessment, 60 percent of which will be used primarily to support the Ballot Initiative/Legislative Crisis fund, and the other 40 percent for national and state media efforts. These funds can't support political campaigns but can support messaging and action against things like anti-collective bargaining

Well, Karen, I guess you are screwed. It should be voluntary IMHO. Mandatory anything having to do with my $ gets my back up.

What I have told the teachers is we have the choice to leave the union. Being in Florida it's not required like some states are. That being said, if something should happen, we have the support of the union along with the lawyers they supply. Makes the decision a hard one.

I would have to say that on balance my union (I was a teacher) did way more good for me and my colleagues than not. They deserved my support for all the good things they accomplished for teachers and students. Sure, there were occasions when I might have disagreed with some of the decisions over a span of 30+ years - still the union deserved my support for all the support they gave all of us.

Another thing I loved abot Betty Ford, when she was in recovery, and doing very well.  She had plastic surgery.  Not drastic ( like some women today who look like they've been caught in a wind tunnel) and she looked prettier.  A reporter asked her about it - and Ford replied: "Yes, I did.  I wanted a new face to go along with my new lease on life!"  Loved her for her honestly.  A really gutsy, honest, and talented woman.

Enjoy your warm/wet weather - it's really cold and dry here this morning. We haven't had any rain for weeks, guess I'll have to water the garden again this weekend.

Betty Ford sounds like a very special lady - so great she beat the beast!!!

What's everyone doing for dinner tonight?

Blue .. are you going out to the swanky restaurant tonight?

Tim just called and he's two hours from home with a flat tire.  Which sucks, but to make matters worse, he doesn't have a jack in the car.  arghh!  I don't know what's going to happen, but he probably won't be home until late so I guess I don't have to think about dinner.  He might want me to drive down there with the truck.

    hugs,

    Bren

Yes it does .. cause assuming he gets the spare on the car, he'll have to stop somewhere on the way home and get the tire replaced.  The spare isn't designed to drive the 2 1/2 hours back to VA.  He is not a happy camper.

Blue .. dinner sounds great!  I'm getting hungry too.  Just heard from Mr. Tim .. thank goodness he found the jack, but he has to stop somewhere to get two new tires put on the back.  Poor guy, he's not going to get home until late tonight.

Fabulous - can I paint it????????

Thanks for coming in & "saving" me there - I really thought I had LOST IT!  Amazing what can happen when a person goes to sleep.

Enjoy your steak - 'specially since you don't have to cook it!  Wow.  What a luxury to have someone cook for you ;)

    Poor Tim!

I am so glad we are allowed to carry on. A lack of approval would have given me the vapors.

Unicorn-excellent choice. I hear they cure cancer. Maybe they can prevent it. Actually it was unicorn horn that cures cancer, that and happy thoughts.

Ya, maybe we can grind it up and  put it in some whipped cream for my chocolate lava cakes.  If that doesn't work at least it will taste good.
