HL - Thanks to Tamoxifen, if the temperature is 37 degrees F or higher, I do not need a winter coat - that is how hot my body is. So imagine what these summers are doing to me.  Hillck - I have plenty of moisture for you...

Lisbon is gorgeous in the summer. I can attest to that. Mass = I think the winters are too long. By the time April rolled around when I was in college and it was still snowing I would get really antsy.

I loved "Calendar Girls." last year's calendar was like that--black & white photos, with the object covering the chest in color. I thought it would be cool to do that kind of shot with my bright blue climbing rope draped across my chest. But they decided to do the full shots instead. I figured, why not?

Skunk just showed up on the deck and was nose to nose with my cat through the screen door. I woke up smelling spray a few nights ago. That stuff's just nasty!

I think I'm going to have nightmares about ponies.

Third load of washing in, food all purchased - roast chicken again tonight as lamb hasn't been on special for a while. Fresh fish tomorrow night - I went to the bigger markets in near the city and got my supplies this morning.

We had nachos for lunch - I make the best!! Refried beans mixed with onion, cheese, salsa mixed and heated in a pot. Then my famous guacamole and sour cream on top. I put garlic, lemon juice and salsa in my guacamole, THE most unhealthy lunch you could imagine, but the tastiest. I tell DH that the beans are good for you and I do use extra light sour cream.

Betty Ford did us all a great favor by being brave enough to be open about her breast cancer.  Back in those days it just was not talked about.  She led the way and then others followed her example and brought breast cancer out of the closet.  Then she did the same with alcohol and prescription drug addiction issues.  And anything else they happened to ask her too  

My favorite First Lady ... a wonderful woman not afraid to speak her mind.  A life well lived.

She was born and grew up near here so there is a lot of tv coverage about her life. Most of it I knew but still fascinating.

I slept late so I hope there is still good stuff at the Farmer's Market. Usually not a problem except for with the meat guy. Then I have to come home and finish tote bags I will be using for birthday gift bags for 4 very special people.

And it looks like it will be hot so we may have kids and grandkids by to swim or fish. Got to get moving. This bug is still slowing me down but I am doing a lot beter.

Betty Ford.  She was a class act.  Now there is a republican woman I can admire.  This morning on the news, they referred to her as a modern day Eleanor Roosevelt. 

Here's a good article from the New York Times.  And some quotes from it (bolded part is mine....good to hear that chemo didn't keep her from going on to live a long and productive life):

"Few first ladies have been as popular as Betty Ford, and it was her frankness and lack of pretense that made her so. She spoke often in support of the Equal Rights Amendment, endorsed legalized abortion, discussed premarital sex and revealed that she intended to share a bed with her husband in the White House."

"On Sept. 28, 1974, Mrs. Ford had a radical mastectomy after doctors discovered cancer in her right breast. Within days, 10,000 letters, more than 500 telephone calls, more than 200 telegrams and scores of floral arrangements poured into the White House and into her suite at Bethesda Naval Hospital. In the months that followed, tens of thousands of American women, inspired by Mrs. Ford's forthrightness and courage in facing her illness, crowded into doctors' offices and clinics for breast-cancer examinations.

After leaving the hospital, Mrs. Ford underwent chemotherapy treatment for two years. In November 1976, her physician announced that she had made a complete recovery.

Mrs. Ford was once asked if she felt sorry for herself during the trauma of losing her breast.

"No! Oh, no - heavens, no," she replied. "I've heard women say they'd rather lose their right arm, and I can't imagine it. It's so stupid. I can even wear my evening clothes."

She advised women facing such an operation to "go as quickly as possible and get it done."

"Once it's done," she said, "put it behind you and go on with your life."

Breast cancer was only one of the medical battles Mrs. Ford won."

I will agree with that apple. Now I'm having a slight uncomfortable feeling though. I am the union rep for my school, I've just found out we all must give an additional 10 dollars to the union to support Obama's reelection. I have a hard time with that as a centrist. I feel we all should have the choice of whom we want to support. I'm getting a lot of negative feed back from the teachers at  my school, and I can't disagree with their anger.
