No reconstruction- Happy w/your decision?

Barbe,
I tried to just have a revision done. I have a LARGE area of radiation damage as well as the issue with the scar. The open scar line lets the infection in. This last time the cellulitis went down into my arm. I've had wound treatmnet. I've ended up in the hospital. I've had hyperbarics oxygen treatments to heal the infection. But the opening remains. I just can't continue in this pattern.
The first plastic surgeon wanted to do the tram flap. Second plastic surgeon wanted to do the lat-flap. I'm not having muscles removed just to fix the skin. That is why I have choosen the DIEP is to replace the bad skin with good skin. I don't know what else to do.

hi all i got the drains out yesterday!! yay. i was wondering if after you get them out if its normal to have some drainage leak out of the holes that are left. he put gauze on it but overnight i soaked the gauze. if i push a bit around the scar some more oozes out. is this normal? dr still told me no housework or arm motion but can walk with arms still. in another week he said i can add activity. anyone else have oozing? thanks!!!
-
Woohoo, Shippy! Drains out!! I had a little bit of oozing, but nothing significant. It lasted for a few days and then stopped. The ooze spot on the gauze wasn't any bigger than the drain site. I could wear the same bandage all day.
-
shippy I read of someone who bled, not oozed and that was still okay. I remember oozing but it stopped pretty quick.
Norma June, couldn't they just use Alloderm to replace the bad skin and leave you flat? Or did you WANT reconstruction? Your post reads like you want to stay flat and they can't help you unless you get reconstruction. If you WANT reconstruction, then that makes a difference.

hi all the drain holes are healing, yay. i took a shower and wondered if that was ok with open holes in my side? anyone know. i also walked to store to try to find clothes that dont emphasize my flat chest and that was depressing. besides the fact that i can only still wear button down i felt kinda depressed like the whole world has breasts except me. do you ever feel that way. i guess it is normal part of grieving. Today is 2 weeks from deconstruction surgery so i feel glad that i am feeling well but am starting to worry about what if i do too much and develop seroma (sp?) how do you know if you are doing too much. my ps said no activities except walking with arms at side and resting. did any of you have those orders as well? any suggestions. thanks sorry for being down.
-
shippy, I have found that button down shirts with slight princess seaming and on-seam button pockets are concealing, with one addition. I bought some lambswool (in the foot care aisle of my local store). I fluff up a little bit of the lambswool and button it into the pockets - not enough to try to look buxom - just enough to not look sunken or totally flat.
-
Sometimes I buy ruffly tops, but most of the time I wear what I want. Celebrate the new you! With my 3D nipple tattoos, I'll always have the chest of a 12 year old, so at least one part of me will always stay young.
-
NJvictoria, I'm afraid to ask but what are 3D nipple tattoos?
If my BS had gotten me smoother instead of concave on the top, funny little boobs on the bottom I wouldn't worry at all and in a lot of tops it's not really noticeable, but it is nice to have ideas for something inbetween having to wear forms and going totally flat or sunken, especially early on.
-
Shippy, it is normal to feel this way after deconstructing. In fact, I was planning to PM you just to see how you are doing. My surgeon told me to expect to "crash and burn" and that I needed to allow myself to take the time to grieve. She was right, and I did go through a mourning process very much like the mastectomy. It definitely is a period of adjustment, but I think after a couple more weeks as you start to feel even better and become accustomed to your new chest, you will feel more at peace. If you ever need to talk, please feel free to PM me.
Let me tell you, out of all the summers to be without boobs, this is it when it comes to clothes! NJVictoria mentioned ruffled blouses, and yes, they are everywhere. Also, lots of tops with shirring, smocking, patterns, etc. It's a flat chest bonanza out there right now! I went on a buying spree when some stores had sales and also had luck at TJ Maxx. And there are light, soft and swingy things to wear over the shirred tanks. Short sleeved sweaters work well, too. Layering helps soften and detract from the flatness. I made myself try on all sorts of tops, even things I normally wouldn't wear. I was surprised that things I thought would look bad actually were great. In general, things with darts don't work as well. There are a couple of threads on this forum that discuss tips for dressing form-free. They are helpful and inspiring.
Shippy, during this adjustment while you are processing things emotionally and getting used to finding clothes that work, remind yourself that you have just been through a really big surgery and change. You had BC and then had to deconstruct. Pat yourself on the back and give yourself credit for making it through all this. You are strong and amazing. And to answer your question, yes, I still see boobs everywhere! I will have twinges of wishing I had my old pre-cancer body, but then I take a deep breath and remind myself I am still alive, healthy and a strong woman. More importantly, I tell myself I am not my breasts or implants. I stand up straight and walk with pride, as this is still my life and I am going to live it!
My PS said it was fine to get the drain sites wet while showering but to keep them covered with a bandage until they closed. It seems like PSs have their own methods and instructions - I would follow the instructions you were given since your PS knows what he did to you during surgery. -
You go, Snippy! I oozed for a day or two after the drains came out until the scabs healed over. Until then, I kept bandaids over them to keep the ooze off my clothes. I saw where someone wore panty shields over theirs. And yes, I was allowed showers.
Everyone up there is giving you GREAT advice. Remember, you are going through this all over again, and you are grieving....it's hard. VERY hard. You do have to learn to dress differently...very true... But do what was suggested and try on all kinds of tops, even ones you wouldn't normally wear. You'll find that your body size has changed, along with the shape. Just avoid those stinkin' darts! I found some cute things even at Old Navy, too....just wish some had been cheaper
Layering works great....a cami with a thin shirt over it, letting it hang partially open works well. OR wearing a clingy t-shirt and a scarf works well for me (as long as the neckline is a little lower than a traditional t-shirt).
And for swim suits, I found that using the yoga/exercising tops were perfect. They are longer in length and with the varying patterns of the fabric, it detracts from the chest and I can wear them with the tankini bottoms I already have.
Be patient with yourself....Give it time....

p.s. I saw NJVictoria's 3D nipples and they look great! I may show my husband the pictures and see what HE thinks.....I had given it thought at one point, but didn't know if it could be done or not. And now I know it CAN!!! (can be done on a non-reconstruction area).....
-
Shippy, as robinlbe mentioned scarves are another thing that make tops you wouldn't think you could wear totally wearable. If you have any already they're a quick fix to help get you through the transition. You've been through a lot. Please be kind to yourself and take the time you need to adjust.
robinlbe, do the 3D nipples involve any surgery (like how they form nipples for reconstruction) or is it just the way the tattooing is done?
-
River Rat, I didn't get the 3D nipples, but NJVictoria did....the nips are just drawn on. Absolutely amazing. Google Vinnie Myers (I think that's the right name) along with 3D nipple tattoos. His portfolio of work will show pictures - some have nips that were already made, but others weren't, and it's amazing how realistic the 3D ones were!! And NJVic had hers done right on her non-reconstructed chest!!!! How cool is that?!?!?

Ladies! I just saw the cutest tops ever (in my opinion) at our New York and Company store today....they are perfect for US! I am on a limited budget, so I only purchased two of them, but I could have gotten so many more! They are mostly on sale for "buy one, get the second for 50%" With the two I tried on, I couldn't even tell I was totally flat-chested, with dents:) I was SO excited
These are the BEST I have ever had!!!
Just had to share !!

Robin, That sounds wonderful, just what I'm looking for. Chance of a link?
-
-
Robin, Vinnie Myers was the right name. Those are pretty cool. Also thanks for the tip about New York and Company. I don't want to spend a lot so this sale sounds great.
-
Lunakin, that is perfect!
-
you all have such great ideas for clothing- I've been wearing a sports bra with fiberfill "boobies" tucked in it-I had surgery May 9th, and my scars seem more bothersome now, espicially while trying to sleep...tried wearing a bra- kinda painful-how long will it take before the scars aren't still painful?
-
Karen, you probably started wearing a bra too soon. Give the area a chance to heal before you do that. I haven't worn a bra for 2 1/2 years and don't plan to ever again!!!
Those tops are PERFECT!!!!!!!
-
I got this one...(wore it last night to dinner, my youngest son's birthday; he turned 14)
-
this is the other one I got.....can't get the link to copy, though (I think *that* link is for the first shirt....)
There are SO many good tops from which to choose...I was so excited

-
p.s. the first shirt, the one I wore last night, is SOOOO soft, I couldn't even tell I had anything on
-
me, AGAIN.....but, if you click on the link for the first shirt that I got....I bought it in the pink color, not the black one..... (not that it really matters, I don't guess...ha!)

Amazing how we notice how SOFT a top is....not if it makes my bum look big, but how SOFT it is!!! Priorities!!

went shopping for a wedding this weekend and really felt down probley for the first time. Trying clothes on was horrible, I have gained weight and couldn't find anything that looked good. Very depressing. Makes me not want to shop.

Nancy, TWO of my kids got married just after I lost my breasts!!! It took a lot of shopping and trying things on and some tears, but I did find something that make me feel pretty. I knew it was right as soon as I tried it on. Good luck sweetie!!!
-
Nancy, I hope you are feeling better today. I sure can relate to your struggle and frustration. I had a closet full of dresses from my pre-BM days, along with three I purchased post-BM when I was in the early expansion phase of my recon. Two were purchased for a wedding and the other for a family event. I can still wear those three dresses today after having my implants removed and going flat. The rest of my dresses no longer worked, and I had to let them go. I spent one morning trying on everything and ended up in a puddle of tears.
You just have to try on a lot of things and see what works. For me, a dress that has a less fitted top with some kind of distracting detail and a fitted waist works best. I have found that a variety of styles can work, as long as the fit and proportions are right. When I had breasts, not every dress I tried fit well, regardless of the style. Same thing is true being flat. Three dresses in the same style may not have the same proportions, so it pays to at least try a couple in each style so you get a sense of whether the fit is off or if the style itself doesn't work. We've all had to dress to play up our good features and minimize others. It's the same game with an additional factor. I promised myself that if I couldn't find clothes I love on my own, that I would take advantage of a personal shopper. Macy's and other dept stores will provide assistance if you make an appt. I know I'm definitely going to use this for winter clothes and when I need to revamp my work wardrobe. -
Tina- I guess I feel like I don't have any good features right now I have gained about 8 lbs since starting Arimidex and I only have 2 bras and they were both dirty when I went shopping so that made it worst. Anyway I think I am going to start Weight Watchers and try to get the extra pounds off and I ordered me 3 more bras so I shouldn't have that problem soon . Feeling much better today thank you

Hello to all. I am on breast cancer #3 - DCIS again...and this time, a mastectomy is scheduled. I had radiation in 2001 and so, it's been 10 years and back again. I am scheduled to do reconstruction at the time of the mastectomy but my gut and my overall feeling of - 'no more of this' is telling me to forget the reconstruction and just have the mastectomy. This is my left side only- so I would have one breast left..but after reading some of the forum comments on reconstruction - I am not inclined to do this. I am almost 59 (in a week) and also have had thyroid cancer 3x...so, like I said - ready to be done with this. All of you seem quite ok with no reconstruction...and I am starting to join the fold on that philosophy.
