Hey ladies, Just had my first TAC treatment and the mouth is raging red and painful. Any suggestions?

Did your onc give you a mouthwash script? I had TCH, but had mouth and tongue issues almost right away. Once I started using the "miracle mouthwash" religiously, all that went away. Maybe call your doctor?

Your onc or the nurse should be able to provide you with a special mouthwash. It was so long ago for me that I can't remember the name, but they'll know. I developed sores later on and found the only thing that felt good in my mouth was popsicles....lots of popsicles. Hang in there!

Sorry, we cross-posted.

Zartist - in the meantime, mix up a solution of 1/2 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp baking soda in two cups of water. Swish a bit of that around in your mouth several times a day until you get the magic mouthwash. This solution may take care of the problem, or at least soothe it temporarily. My onc nurse gave me this formula.

The onc told me that I would get mouth sores not about this swollen red tongue and painful not to mention. I was told to use Biotene but it burns so badly! I will have to ask for the miracle mouthwash. Thank you

The red devil aka A is notorious for causing mouth issues. Try chewing ice chips while they push it in and for 15 minutes afterwards. Also, Biotin is an over the counter mouthwash that worked wonders for me. Chewing gum seemed to help too. Good luck!

thanxs...trying it now!

The swollen tongue doesn't sound right. How swollen? So you can't speak properly or just inflamed? If it's really swollen it sounds more like an allergic reaction. BTW, I did have the raging red mouth, the sores didn't come until later,..but my tongue never swelled.

There is a Mylanta/Benedryl swish and spit that the DR. where I work orders for the kids when they have canker sores, really works.

I agree with gracie1 ... if your tongue is swollen you probably need to call your doctor and report that. If the swelling keeps increasing go to the ER. Better safe than sorry and allergic reactions can be serious.

Biotene make a gel which is quite soothing.
Longer term though, you should see a naturopath about supplements that can support your body during chemo: I took various supplements which did a great deal to protect my mouth and gut from chemo.
I also sucked on ice during the whole of the AC infusion as I had been told on this site that keeping the mouth area cool during the infusion would limit mouth problems. The onco and the nurses scoffed, but I did it and I never had serious problems during or after any chemo session: just some mild tenderness which Biotene dealt with.
Good luck!
