    My grandfather was French Canadian, as were my grandmother's parents.  My grandfather never spoke English because he went deaf at the age of 5.

    We're here till October 11. So my appliqué project will have to wait. Actually, although I am now committed to finishing that long-standing project (little bears paw blocks made of only French and Dutch fabrics, I already have 88 of them and really just need to put them together), I think I might just be sidetracked by an idea that is taking shape in my head: something to do with the Little Prince and his fox, rose, snake, planet, sunset, etc. My daughter loves that book and said she is talking about it to my grandson. He's still too young to read it, so that gives me a little time, right?

    It's sad your grandfather went deaf at so young an age. Was he able to read lips? Do you speak any French, Meece?

    We are travellling to the UK and Paris in August/September - maybe I can get some great cross stitch kits while I'm there. We don't get much of a selection here in Oz but I found a UK store that ships for free and they have over 4000 x stitch kits on their website. Trouble is that I'm running out of wall space and money to get them framed, so I'm going to have to find something new to keep me occupied, like finishing the Pine Needles quilt :)

    Yes, my grandfather read lips...english, and used American Sign Language.  He was sent to boarding school for the deaf as a very young boy.  No, I don't speak French.  All my relatives who did were gone by the time I arrived.

    Hi Girls,

    I just put my sampler quilt on the bed as it's getting colder. Here's a pic. It took me a year to make it. Sorry it's sideways :)

    Very Nice!  A sampler is a great way to try out different patterns and see which ones you'd like to make a whole quilt of.

    Thankyou. I do love it. Every square is different and it took me ages just to work out the best placement. There are 8 squares that have lace trim arranged in a captial letter I in the middle. I especially like that we use it every winter. We even decorated our bedroom to match the colours.

    Thanks Girls!!! I made it back in 1992 or 3 I think - my first and only foray into the art of quilting until this damn Pine Needles one :)

    Funny thing, I got the fabric from a local quilting store and the lady's husband used to help her customers pick out the fabric - we can give him the credit. He had such good taste.

    It is gorgeous Sue. My dad will sometimes help my mom pick out the fabrics for her quilts. Sometimes it takes someone with an unbiased eye to help pick out the fabrics.

    It's not his favorite thing to do, but DH has been know to wander around the fabric store and make some good choices.

    I LOVED helping people pick out fabric when I had my quilt store!!! I used to teach colour classes as well. I have learned that I have an "eye" but truly thought the rest of the world saw colour the same way I did. It can be as basic as: pick a print; pull out 4 colours from that print and 1 contrast. There, you now have 6 colours which is what a sampler quilt usually uses. If you really want a quilt that jumps, use contrasting colours onlly. Check out a colour wheel if you need to and work with it. If you notice, on printed fabrics, along the selvedge edge there are colour circles showing what colours are in the print. Match those if need be.

    Sue, if you've run out of walls to hang things, consider turning your work into pillows!! Much cheaper to finish, as well.

    My DH will occasionally go to the fabric store with me if we are out of town and in the bigger cities.  We don't have much of a fabric selection or stores where I live so I go on a buying frenzy when I get the chance.  I buy with nothing specific in mind.  My last out of town trip, I as able to get some fabrics for a piece I have been hanging on to but could never coordinate.  Now I have another project waiting for me.

    Barbe - You need to be closer to some of us gals to help pick out colors and work on projects.  You always have good advice and tips.

    Houston Texas is the HUB of quilting in North America. That's where they have Quilt Show, isn't it?

    Jo, In the DFW area we have several locally owned quilt shops.  I know several of the shops have gotten together and arranged a chartered bus and overnight stay for a weekend this summer as an area wide shop-hop.  I think the are including maybe 5 shops a day for the 2 days.

    beccad - Wished I live closer to DFW or even San Antonio.  I am so far down in Texas - close to the border - we are starved for quilt shops or even a decent fabric store.  I have resorted to doing a lot of fabric shopping online particularly if I want batiks.

    Hi Ladies..it's me...OTW (ONETOUGHWOMAN), Thank you meece for starting this thread....now just how do I get a pic of mine on here?????

    An update, I had my tram re-con the end of March and then just last week my exchange on right side for implant, all went well, it's healing time now and I celebrated my 5 year Mother's Day..much to be excited about...a lot has been happening and all for the good, up, up and AWAY!!!!

    Full-time Job interviewing and at last all the drama and crud has gone by the wayside and I've turned my life around....here's wishing you all a enjoyable weekend! Hugs to you all...Stephanie

    Welcome, OTW (Stephanie).  Some ladies upload their pictures to Facebook and then copy and paste them from there.  Some use Photobucket and upload pictures there, then you copy and paste the URL into the little box beside the smiley on the toolbar above this box,  I have done both, and I also have my own website and will upload pics there and then copy the image location to the little tree box.

    I spoke with DS and it appears that Baby Boo may come 3 weeks early. Boo is growing rapidly and they are concerned that we may have a  10 lb baby.  They feel that delivering at 37 weeks might be the safest thing, as the baby will be developed enough to be healthy.  This means I need to get the nursery decor done even sooner!  Guess I'd better put on my turbo thimble and start sewing again!
