    Kathy - the Indian Hawthorn grows well in the shade as well as the sun.  We have one that gets sun most of the day, 1 that gets only the morning sun and 1 that is in the shade all day. All of them are doing well. The one that gets only the morning sun is huge.  It is about 4' across and a little over 3' high.

    Toasted the bride and groom with some good kiwi wine, had cake. then later had chips(fries) and cheerios and more cake.

    Hi, Lisa.  I watched until I had to leave for the day.  I recorded it though and will watch the highlights later.

    Kathy, I grow daffodils under lots of trees here.  As long as they're not evergreens the daffodils bloom before the trees shade them out.

    Kathy - I got mine at Lowe's Home Improvement. Home Depot might have them too.  Let me know if you do not find them and I will run one up to you.  Monroe is not that far from Raleigh.  Maybe we could visit while we plant it.

    Isn't Spring wonderful?  I watched the vows and ring ceremony before I had to leave for work...still haven't seen the whole replay - didn't have time tonight, and going to NY tomorrow with dd's to wander the city, have dinner, see the Lion King, wander more, then back to the one dd's place for a sleepover. Nothing I love more than time with my lovelies so I'm psyched :)

    Won't be back on computer till Sun night.  Hope you all have a wondermous Saturday.

    Oh - to any of you who knew Lana Jean Healey (Lady Jean on chat), she passed away the week before Easter and we're having a memorial in the chat room (the Staying Connected room) Sunday evening at 7:30 EDST if anyone would like to come share a memory or whatever.

    Mary, so sorry to hear about Lana. May she rest in peace.

    Alyson, wine, chips, cake and cheerios is a very weird combination of food. Maybe I will give it a try.

    Got my peacock orchids and lillies in the mail and have a beautiful day ahead.  I know what I will be doing. Laughing  I left a lot of old debris in my garden last fall so have some cutting and clearing to do.  All the trees are budding and the tulips are headed and colored - ready to bloom.  With the sun and warmth today and tomorrow I think it is the beginning of a beautiful week.  Have to figure out how to post pictures here.  The spring and the mountain backdrop are an amazing sight. 

    Love the fact that everyone is sharing their spring and gardens here. 

    Back to work on Tuesday - part-time.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone.  I work with the best group of women and two men to keep us honest.  They will help me ease into full-time.

    Brigaddon, love your avatar. LOVE woodpeckers (except when I am sleeping and they are pecking the drainspout. They aren't too bright). Have fun digging in the dirt!

    Barbara, My son is a deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department! 

    We have these, Downy and Hairy woodpeckers.  The red-headed are suppose to be in this area but I have yet to see one.

    I live in Pinellas County. I don't think I have ever seen a downy or hairy one. Will go look them up.

    I used to live in MD and we had Pileated woodpeckers. They were HUGE.

    When we lived in Olympia wa had two woodpeckers living in the gully next to our home, a Pileated and a little flicker.  It was amusing to listen to them---thunk, thunk, tip, tip, tip---thunk thunk thunk, tip, tip tip.

    We have a pair of red-headed woodpeckers that seem to be here each spring.

    I've watched them for hours, but have yet to get a good photo of them, drat!

    Hey folks. Today is my one year cancerversary. I am not celebrating but I am grateful to be alive and well. DH is taking me out to dinner tonight to celebrate 11 months smoke free as of Monday. WooHoo!

    I concur with amyjo! A party for YOU now Barbara! Congrats on the 11-month anniversary - that is a huge accomplishment!

    We have TONS of woodpeckers in my little 8-acre forest, including the gigantic Pileated. All kinds, I'm not an expert but I've seen some pretty colorful ones. They're cool to observe, but at the same time I'm wondering just how many dead trees we have here!Undecided

    Barb...I hope you had a lovely dinner. It is one anniversary we all look forward to.

    I bought myself a gold bracelet at each celebration....but this year, it will be 8 years in 2 weeks...I am not buying another. I can't wear them all, looks a bit 'chavvy'.  I do wear 3 of them all the time (the 1st 3 ) but the rest are just stuck in a drawer. I shall buy myself something to mark the occasion tho'. I need new tyres for my car, so that could be my celebration present to myself this year !

         Brigadoon.. hello, i don't think we've met.. i was wondering Where you got your peacock orchids.. ive never heard of that.. can you post a pic?  

        issabella, i tried 2 local places for the canary bird. haven't found it yet.. but have more to go to look for it... i DID ge a wonderful "floribunda" rose, light lilac, and it SMELLS wonderful. ive wanted a good lavendar one for awhile. would LOVE licacs, but they don't grow this far south. i think its' too hot...    3jjays.

    3jaysmom - I found these in a garden center a couple of years ago and they became one of my favorites.  Put them by a place that you sit or a window because the fragrance is yummy.  (This is my second attemtpt to post a picture.  Hope I will be successful this time.) 

    barbaraA - Thank you for starting this forum.  I am 66 and this forum is just the place for me.

    Thanks, Brigadoon. I am headed to the garden store for some peacock orchids. I read up on them and they are a member of the gladiolus family. Interesting. I tend to kill real orchids so maybe I can keep them alive.

    3jays I LOVE lilacs...my favorite flower but you are right, it is too hot here. I occasionally order them just to have them. Love the smell.

    The dinner was great! I had two appetizers: Cauliflower/cheddar brochettes and scallops with bacon and brussels. Yum. Then for dessert I had Eton mess. It ROCKED! Best part of dinner.

    The place is owned by two gay Brits and they had a royal wedding party Friday starting at 5AM. Over 250 people showed up. Wish I could have been there to see the hats. Heard it was a blast!

    I started having luck with orchids when I followed the icecube way of watering.  I haven't tried the orchid planters yet but I think I finally have the answer.

    Hope you enjoy the peacock orchids. 

    Lilacs are one of my favorites also.  They are all over here.  The old foundations where homes once sustained families still have a big, old lilac as a marker for the past.
