    Why did he go shirtless?

OK... I had to ask my husband who knows his music, who the heck this guy was.... Turns out he was a member of the band "The Sex Pistols" who are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (which explains, loosely, his appearance on my TV tonight)....

    A little Bio from Google...

" Rock and roll was never the same after the Sex Pistols. They ignited the punk-rock revolution in Britain, and the reverberations carried to all corners of the rock and roll world. Expressing the cynical, restive mood of youthful Britons, the Sex Pistols restored a sense of danger to rock music. This wasn't the theatrical danger of Alice Cooper's onstage guillotine but the very real possibility of injury to the body and a jolt to the senses. At Sex Pistols concerts during their two-year British heyday - from their first show on November 6, 1975, through the end of 1977 - ..."

Who the heck knew???  I hope to never see him again!

    Teka,

The only answer that I can think of is he didn't have his glasses on and couldn't see how bad he looked!!

I just discovered this thread, so I'll just jump right in here. Tonight was a shocker, so wrong, so wrong.  I thought Stephano or Haley would go.  As for last night, I was blown away by James performance, so beautiful, and thought Casey was wonderful.

I agree that Lauren's hairdo from last night was awful, and the shirtless guy from tonight was certainly puzzling.

Sorry Jacob should have gone..........his comment the night he sang was totally uncalled for.............I still say he's a screamer.........

How anyone could imply that Scotty is arrogant is ridiculous..........The kid has talent, is quiet, and quite humble..........Because he doesn't jump around like the others....and again is clean, polished, and looks like he doesn't need a bath..........come on ladies

They did their save for Casey........said it was a bad move too early.....Pia was better.  Could have saved it for her........She had talent......someone will sign her.

Jennifer was very uncomfortable and unhappy for the entire show. Even before elimination.

rgiuff...so glad you discovered the thread.

The shirtless Iggy Pop was a definite low in the history of AI.  Tonight's vote was surprising in some ways, but in other ways not so much.  I just think it should have been Stefano first.

Well, I can't believe it either.

Also, I kept saying, "Why is that Constantino guy back from Season 4?". But now, I'm thinking it's a good thing. If he was still around, he could be a HUGE comfort to ****.  He finished 6th in his season - who knew he was in a big national tour and that he was nominated for a Tony? Hopefully, he's still around to talk to her. I can think of at least 5 contestants I would rather see leave before her!

The judges are probably second-guessing themselves on that save for Casey, but no one could have ever imagined tonight's result!

Here is the wiki link for Iggy Pop... don't think it was the Sex Pistols.. I vaguely remember him from his collaborations with David Bowie in the 80s.....   According to wikipedia, I think he was with the Stooges?  I've never heard of them.  It wasn't an appealing act, even if he is an alternative legend.

Here's the wiki link if you are interested.  I caught a glimpse of another picture with no shirt, so maybe that is part of his regular act?  But I agree, it was not a very appealing performance.

While Pia's taste in music left me kind of cold, she was one of the stronger singers, and didn't deserve to go home.  And again, like last year, all the little tweener girls with their fast fingers on their cell phones mean that we are going to have a final five with one girl left!

I am not suprised Pia went home, but I would have liked to see how she improved.  She is def. beautiful and has a great voice, but just a little boring.

angel- I know what you mean about Jacob's comment.  When he said that, it changed my mind about him.  He doesn't seem mean or cocky, but that comment came out of nowhere.  And, I too would love to see Adam Lambert and James perfrom together.  I loved Adam and now I like James alot.

Radiant- finally someone that shares my dislike for Scotty.  I think he is cocky too.  I just can't get past the arrogance.  And why on earth were those girls running up to the stage?  ewww!

This is kind of a gross analogy, but I told my mother in law Iggy Pops chest looked like mine after my skin sparing, before I had any fills. Laughing  I know he is older so I can't say much about his hanging skin, but at least keep it covered up.....yuk!

    Go Haley, Casey and James!

     A young Iggy Pop

Allison, that's a good analogy!  I believe he is now in his mid 60's.  I missed his AI performance but I've seen him recently enough to know what everyone is talking about!  Iggy Pop is a legend though.  A shame what so many years of heroin addiction has done to him, although I understand he kicked the habit some years ago.  A big part of his shtick was being shirtless and I believe he probably doesn't care what anyone thinks.  In a way, that's kind of refreshing (although it might be hard to stomach!).  Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed his video for 'The Passenger', full of great classic scenes from great classic movies, and I believe many of you will enjoy it also. I'm not a big Iggy Pop fan or anything but I like this song and I'm really impressed with the video.

Sorry to be slightly off topic .. just wanted to share some interesting tidbits about Iggy Pop:

    James Newell Osterberg Jr.
The Iguana, The Godfather of Punk, Jimmy
21 April 1947, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA

Legendary Rock 'n' Roll wildman and substance abuser. Recorded a series of classic rock albums with The Stooges and later as a solo artist. Worked extensively with 'David Bowie

Is said to be the 'Father of Punk Rock'

    -   The character "Funboy" in the original _The Crow (1994)_ (qv) was modeled after him, and he was supposed to be cast as "Funboy", but scheduling prohibited him from being in the movie. He instead appeared as "Curve" in its sequel, _The Crow: City of Angels (1996)_ (qv).

    -   Father of Eric Benson.

    -   Iggy plays guitar left-handed.

    -   Had a cameo role on _"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993)_ (qv). "DS9" producer 'Ira Steven Behr' (qv) was at the time and is to this day a major fan.

    -
Footage of him writhing on stage is used as the opening of and to separate segments on Australia's longest running and most popular music video show _"Rage" (1987)_ (qv).

    -   Computer animators on 'Peter Jackson (I)' (qv)'s _The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)_ (qv) used his movement and body as a basis for the character Gollum.

    -   His group, 'The Stooges' (qv), although never a huge commercial success, was essential in the development of punk rock. In fact, the unifying trait of all the members of what were arguably the two greatest "punk" bands, 'Ramones' (qv) and 'The Sex Pistols' (qv), was their idolizing of Iggy and The Stooges.

    -   Now famous for his crazed behavior in the late 60s and 70s, much of Iggy's craziness was fueled by his addiction to heroin. Iggy would often mutilate himself, roll around in peanut butter or broken glass, throw himself offstage (and once down a flight of stairs), bend his body like a pretzel, hump his amps, go naked, and insult the audience. Offstage, he did little else other shoot heroin and have promiscuous sex. In the late 70s, he quit heroin to save his own life and lost interest in sleeping around.

    -   Iggy (short for "Iguana") is often compared to 'Jim Morrison (I)' (qv) (also known as "The Lizard" or the "Lizard King"). While Morrison's 'The Doors' (qv) was far better known and more commercially successful than Iggy's Stooges, the Stooges sparked punk rock music. The two were comparably wild men, known for their over-the-top, destructive stage acts and hedonistic behaviors offstage. The biggest difference, of course, is that Iggy survived his wild years, while Morrison didn't. When Morrison died, the surviving Doors even tried to recruit Iggy as a replacement, but he turned them down.

    -
The Stooges were voted the 78th Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Artists of all time by Rolling Stone.

    -   'David Bowie (I)' (qv) produced 'The Stooges' (qv)' "Raw Power" album as well as Iggy's first two solo albums, "The Idiot" & "Lust For Life". "The Idiot" Contains the original version of the song "China Girl", later covered famously by Bowie.

    -   In the 1970s, 'David Bowie (I)' (qv) played keyboard on his first solo tour. He was an unannounced guest player.

Really wrong that Pia went home tonight. Duckyb - we are free to identify who we like and don't like. Scotty is not my cup of tea. That's what I said. Others have a right to say what they feel as well.

Clearly,  I haven't read the threads, but maybe others really like him. That's fine. I don't. That's it - end of story.

Well I wish Pia would have done something more disco..(I know it was R&R ) I think she would have been good with last dance.

    I can't help liking Jacob.

    Scotty was kind of fun.

Durbin is growing on me....in the group he seemed like the best singer.

    I enjoy paul.

    Stefano...yawn.

    Hailey...I like her voice

    Lauren...potential...not quite there yet

I like Casey with the bass...not my total favorite singer tho

Sorry to get off topic here but.....

Angel- thanks for the Iggy Video.  My husband and I love movies.  I will have to show the video to him as well.  He will enjoy it.  I showed my husband the performance on AI and he said he thought that Iggy looked good for a sixty-something man.  I agree....that being said....keep your shirt on!  You don't see Rod Stewart taking his shirt off anymore for a reason.   I think you are right though....he probably isn't too concerned with what we think.  Just a side note- I love Bowie.

Still can't see how anyone could call Scotty arrogant..............Also a dork...............I guess I just like clean cut guys, who comb their hair, dress like their not a circus act, don't look like they need a good scrubbing and above all else "has talent"

Another young boy comes to mind David Archalette same thing, same qualities as Scotty, but that isn't what kids today like....................oh and yea "the girls running on stage absolutely ridiculous, as was said "what was that about..................Totally unnecessary..........Hey ladies we can agree to disagree.........Lets just hope the best person wins, but face it, the really good ones have probably already been talked to by some big record company..........In some cases even the losers come out winners.............Rainy Friday in the Northeast.

The problem with AI is in the voting.... who wins and who comes in 10th really doesn't mean much except maybe more exposure the longer you hang in.  But since a person can vote multiple times, and apparently the teens (and from what I've heard, mostly girls) do the most of this, the results are so skewed they just seem meaningless to me.  It really doesn't come down to the best -- it comes down to the most popular.   If it were really about singing and performing and getting the best person, they'd let the judges call it every week.   So for me the fun is just watching, and actually I always enjoy the auditions the most (because you do get to see some really funny and BAD singers that way and it's really entertaining!).

All that said, I was surprised that Pia was voted off just now -- I figured she had a few more weeks -- but honestly, I was never much of a fan and won't miss her.   Thia was too young to be in the competition, and Pia was too unconnected to her songs and her own emotions.  And too stiff.

Moving on!  What will the theme be next week?

I thought Iggy Pop was awful & an embarrassment.

No loss to me to see Pia go. Beautiful girl, beautiful voice but...somehow she just didn't connect. That being said, they ALL are doing well, and SOMEBODY has to go every single week.  I think having those professional producers greatly reduces the chances of someone bombing (and therefore being an easy pick to go), so it is going to be hard every week from now on.

I wondered if J-Lo is cut out for this. She really seemed to take it hard last night.

And finally - the judges all kept saying how wrong this was. I wonder who THEY thought should have gone?

Oh, yeah, do the judges not get that the voters are fickle, and that to the general public, it's not really about the best singer?  I mean, maybe it was wrong (although I don't think so, Pia was too boring for me) and someone else should have gone depending on your criteria, but they know the teenyboppers are ruling this, and if they're going to let everyone vote as often as they like... well, come on.  Pia was never going to win so she was going to go sooner or later anyway.

Last night's elimination was a shocker.  I didn't think Pia would necessarily win, but thought she would at least be in the top 5.  Fickle voters!

Iggy Pop's performance was pretty awful -- he should retire and remain a legend (just my opinion).

hopeful34:  i LOL when I read your comment about iggys chest...so funny... But have to say you are correct...

that whole iggy thing was a waste and not something for AI...big mistake. I really felt sorry for Pia she was sobbing in jacobs arms last night. What a shocker.

Usually by now in AI I have a favorite. This year I don't. Anyone esle feel like that? I never liked Paul and Casey should of never been saved. Just my opinion. I used to love Stefano but not I am finding him boring. I didn't like Lauren at all but she is getting much better..

I do like AI this year but as stupid as this sounds, I hate when they clap for all the contestants. I like it better in years past that when one person, one song was totally exceptional the contestant got either a standing ovation or a round of applause from the judges. They are just to darn easy on them. They like everyone.

I loved when Simon would say.. pack your bags you won't be here next week...

okay so  am a little mean(tee-hee)

I think the judges clearly expected it would be Stefano (when it came down to Pia and Stefano).  As we watched my boyfriend said: imaginne how Stefano feels right now.  He had to know that if he had been cut the judges would not have had that reaction.

I agree ladies -- Pia was BORING -- a great singer but boring.

I also agree with whoever said that they usually have a favorite by now (so do I) and this year I don't either.

I do remember David Bowie's album Changes on Bowie, where he does mention Ziggy in at least one of his songs.

I agree that Somebody does have to go every week, and that they are all so talented, so it's difficult to see anybody go, but I still wasn't ready for it to be Pia, really thought it would be Stephano and apparently, so did he and the judges.  I love Pia's voice, but also it could partially be that she is a local girl from Queens, close to where I grew up.

I had DVRed the show and the end was cut off.  Didn't get to see her sing her final song, am now looking for it on YouTube.
