Where to walk?

Hello. I'm new here. My very close friend was diagnosed with invasive stage II breast cancer. A month ago she felt a lump, now she has cancer. She's not even 40.

Anyway, I'm looking for advice on where to walk for breast cancer awareness/funding/anything. I'd like to find something in the northeast, but heard most of Avon goes for administrative and not for breast cancer. I've looked at breastcancerfund.org but there's nothing nearby. I have found so much other great advice here for what I can do for her that I thought I'd ask. Any advice on how to be there for her, and her family, would be appreciated. I'm completely impressed by this community of men and women. I feel so helpless, and I think walking would make me feel like I'm doing something. Probably won't be in good enough shape until 2012!

    I'm sorry to hear about your friend! I live in the suburbs of Boston and did the Avon walk last year. Avon raises a lot of money for research. I had considered doing the Susan G. Komen this year but based on the lawsuits they have against other organizations for using the word "cure" in their name, I question how much of the money goes to their legal fees. i also do not agree with what they are doing to these smaller organizations.

    I understand how helpless you feel but your friend is very lucky to have you!

    Thanks! I actually was able to answer my own question here. How funny Sandless Soldier, I live in the Boston burbs myself. I've heard so much about Avon using lots of the money to go to administrative costs that I didn't want to do that one, but I have been going back and forth with breastcancerfund.org and am hoping to organize a walk/run, maybe in Natick, for 2012. I haven't really begun, I was just emailing back and forth with the PR person there yesterday, but when I do I'll put the info here... maybe you will join us?
