Not sure yet, but these blisters could be shingles!! I will know more tomorrow. Apparently very common once radiation is complete as the immune system is so compromised. I just want the diagnosis, a treatment plan and some answers to my many questions as we leave Saturday morning for our trip! YOY!!!
Take good care and just breathe. . .

Ug. These burns are killing me! My skin under my arm is black and peeling. I have been using gel packs, RadiaGel, Calendula and Aloe. Still, I'm burnt crisp. Only 7 treatments remaining. I can't wait to move my arm like a normal person again! Right now it hurts so bad I don't want to move at all. I hope everyone is doing well and pushing through. There is light at the end of this tunnel!
-
Teklya-damn-yes it could be shingles...bummer...are you in pain?I had shingles many years ago.that suks.i hope thats not it.and its catching too.Im gonna be prayin for you honey.HEY SISTAS.WE NEED A GROUP HUGGGGGGGGGGGG.pLEASE LET US KNOW.
-
Tekyla-I had a are of tiny blister but they popped that night and were dry the next morning so the RO was not concerned with it. But it was towards the end of my treatment not after. Hope it is not shingles so you can enjoy your trip.

For those of you that guided me in Aloe purchase... thank you! I ended up with Fruit of the Earth. Trader Joes had parabens. My RO said Aquaphor if things get bad, but I read the ingredients and it has Lanolin Alcohol...the Rads nurse said no oil, no lanolin. I've had 4/33, and things look good, but my Nip is bright red and a little bit tender. I've been wearing a sports bra, and think I'm going to switch to cami's but most of mine have shelf linings with a lot of elastic. Not on my list of comfort wear. I looked at men's undershirt tank tops, because they are longer than women's, and I'm a tuck in kind of girl thanks to the cold weather of maine...but I'm wondering if the ribbed like fabric will be nipple unfriendly.
For those of you that are struggling with other issues. I'm right there with you! I had an ultra sound today...what was previously a 15 minute deal turned into 45 minutes. the tech recorded the sound of the blood flow to my ovaries...although the tech can't say anything, I know that's not good. Does anyone remember the days prior to the "anxious waiting" time period? I have to admit, This whole BC process only started in Dec, and those days seem way, way off!
-
Saw my nurse today who called another nurse in to confirm our suspicion and they finally had me see the Oncologist., I have shingles. OUCH !! He said, "your body is really beat up right now and I am not surprised that this is how it is reacting". I have some oral meds to take for the next 10 days and need to cover the rash with non-stick gauze and paper tape. I am not to go in the chlorinated pool while on vacation or the ocean or the hot tub. I am still happy to be going, though.
thanks for all your support, you ladies are the best!

I will take good care and just breathe. . .

Number 11 done today...getting pretty tan...skin holding up okay...looking forward to the 2 days off after tomorrow...
Teklya--sorry to hear that it's shingles girl...I hope the meds help it resolve quickly...
GrannyDukes--thanks for the group hug! xoxo
Heathermcd--are you doing any better today? I certainly hope so...
GirlFriday--I went to Walmart and got a 2 pack of button front cotton bras a size bigger than I usually wear ($10)...they are working out quite nicely so far....
Have a great evening all....
Tori
-
Teklya so sorry about the shingles, but I hope you have a great time on vacation
Girlfriday-my nipple started bothering me from the git go and only got worse. My RO recommended that I purchase silicone nipple shields you can purchase them at a mastectomy supply place and they are inexpensive. $12 for a pair of two. They were a life saver for me.
-
Sherryc--thanks for that tip! I'm gonna look for some!

13 down and 17 to go. I am doing well as far as my skin goes, but I am very tired and today I have been really dizzy. Has anyone else gotten really dizzy? They checked my blood pressure and it was normal and I had my contacts in the correct eye and the RO and the nurse said that my meds would not cause me to be dizzy so I am at a loss as to what would cause it. I drink plenty of water and am eating when I am supposed to so no clue. Still only a little tan in the V of my chest that is exposed to the sunlight. The Miaderm and Emu oil are working really well so far at keeping me from burning.
heathermcd - so sorry to hear your skin is so bad and is hurting so much. Joining Grannydukes in the {{{{{{Hugs}}}}} and praying for quick healing of your skin.
Hope everyone has a restful evening. Amy Jo

Only one more sleep! Off tomorrow morning for Jamaica. Should be on the beach and enjoying a rum flavored drink by supper time. Can't wait; this has been such a hellish year, sooooo need this break.
Thank you for all your kind healing wishes for me (my shingles and my boo boos).
Teklya

Have a wonderful time Teklya! You deserve it!
-
Teklya: Anchors away!
SherryC: I"m going to check those shields out!
Torigirl: I've got those bras, been wearing them since surgery...I was just concerned about the later weeks of treatment and the underside. They've prepped me that this could be very uncomfortable.
-
teklya- enjoy your get away!
14 of 28 down, I'm half way through, woot.

I'm so upset! I will have Radiation tx number 6 today but think I am going to have to ask to see the Dr. (he said any treatment day he is available to see me just ask) because after successful surgery and chemo, I think I am getting lymphedema!!!! I had a sentinel node biopsy, only 2 removed, both negative, with a lumpectomy. My RO is doing radiation to the underarm area (where the incision is from the sentinel node biopsy) and maybe he shouldn't be since I was 2 nodes only and both negative. I really like and trust him but I don't know about this. The left arm (surgery side) is visibly swollen (not hugely so but a difference that is visible) in the upper arm, back side of same arm and slightly on the inside of the arm below the elbow. I don't know because I've been having to put that arm up over my head during treatment to open up that whole area and that's a movement I'm not used to doing so it has been straining the shoulder joint and it has hurt some. Also, that arm has always been slightly larger all my life. So, I'm really upset if this might be lymphedema since I didn't have it as a result of surgery but now with the radiation!!!! I'll let you all know what the Dr. says.

I had radiation done to my underarm too, i had 7 nodes removed and they were all negative too. it really hurt to put my arm up during treatment too. it sure doesnt hurt to check with the doctor, i went after my treatments were done because i was so burnt under the armpit and basically she said there is nothing else we can do for you. i kept putting emu oil on and in a week i was just pink, but it sure did hurt!!!
-
Just a thought for those of you that have been having issues with your arms post surgery and movement/swelling. Right after my BMX (and 22 nodes removed) my Dr. had me go to a physical therapist who specializes in lymphadema and breast cancer surgery range of motion issues. I highly recommend finding someone who can work with you. This person was instrumental in getting my range of motion back, and honestly, I believe she is the reason that I don't have any symptoms of lymphedema yet. She taught me some exercises and really worked my arms. I would ask your RO if they can recommend someone to help out! Sending good thoughts and love to all of those who are struggling at the moment.
5 Treatments left after today. I cannot wait to be done and repair my poor skin!
-
Jwatrlily I also suspect lymphodema, I have an appointment next week with a specialist for evaluation. Noticed the surgery arm was slightly but noticeably bigger when trying on clothes over the weekend and then asked my surgeon who I just happened to have an appoinment with for 6 month follow up. He agreed and also said this is better caught early so don't delay if you think so at all.
-
Hey there Ladies,
Do talk to your RO if you are having issues with your arms whether neuropathy or lymphodema. They can make an appointment with a physical therapy specialist and that way your insurance will be more apt to pay for the treatment with little hassel for you. My RO made all the arrangements for me to see the same physical therapist that I was seeing before I started rads. Insurance company approved all the treatments I would need. I can go everyday if I feel like I need to or I can go 2 - 3- time a week if that works better for me. And I can continue to go until I have full range of motion with no pain no matter how long that may take. It was definately worth the talk with the RO.
I have finished 14 of the 30 so I am almost 1/2 way through. Skin is still looking good and starting to get a little tan. Gee, I have never had a tan in my life! I am not a sun person, due to very sensitive skin. I have always covered head to toe when I would go outside, even to the beach.
Hope everyone enjoys the weekend break from treatments and get time to rest and heal before next week begins.
Joy and blessings, Amy Jo

I'm about to start my radiation treatments. I was introduced to the simulation room where I got marked, taped, and manipulated to form my cradle last Tuesday. I go back on Monday to make sure their calibrations were correct and that's when I'll find out my treatment schedule. I'm hoping to begin my rads as soon as possible because I live in the Virgin Islands but had to fly to the states (Birmingham, AL) for my treatment. Thanks for taking the time to write about the entire process in such detail. I'm one of those women who likes to know as much as possible, beforehand, and I found your posts really helpful.

I haven't been on in a few days - managed to avoid catching my husband's cold for over three weeks but it finally caught me, yuck!I finished #12 out of 34 yesterday, so just past the 1/3 mark. When I saw the RO on Wed. he said "oh my, it's early for you to be this red"... They started me on saline compresses - has anyone here done those? It's a saline solution that you can make at home too (1 qt. water, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp baking soda), wet a soft cloth (I'm using 2 baby washcloths) and place on entire area for 15 minutes. Air dry and then moisturize. The purpose is to draw the heat out, and they have really helped. Supposed to do this 3-4 times a day, which is not easy to accomplish during the day at work, but will make it work. Walmart had packs of 4 baby washcloths for $.96 so got a bunch of those, they were thinner and softer than the good ones.I picked up some emu oil yesterday - so will add that to the arsenal. I continue to be sore, esp in nip area so will look into the silicone shields, thanks to the tip here.Happy Saturday!Sharon
-
Jwatrilily - Check your RO again about radiating your underarm with negative nodes. My RO told me he will not be radiating my underarm, since I too have negative sentanil nodes.
-
Sharon - so sorry you are burning so soon, Take very good care of your skin. Keep lots of cream on there. sending you gentle {{{{{HIGS}}}}}
I am doing well, but I am so glad we have the weekend break. It gives me time to rest and get keep my skin really lubed up. Hope everyone is haveing a great weekend. Amy Jo
-
# 9 was Friday...so far so good.....thinking this week the yuck will begin....everyone seems to say 2 weeks and the burn starts...so.....you all offer such good advice. I also found a tank/camisole by Jockey...the straps are a little wider and it is super soft cotton type fabric...$18...but use coupons...at least I always do...found one at Kohl's, Macy's, Bon Ton....I think it and I will be good friends at the arm holes are large enough that they don't rub under the arm.
-
Amyjo....I too have been dizzy since my chemo treatments and it has continued in radiation even though I am drinking lots of water. Saw my Dr., blood pressure was ok...but he called it positional....so I need to be careful when I get up from bed, sit up after the rx treatment, etc. It also bothers me when I lie down in bed or turn over...once I am up I am ok. Hoping it will just disappear.
I wrote down all of your suggestions. My RO only suggests Aquaphor, but I have been using that and the Rio Vista Natural moisturing cream...actually need to order more of that....guess this week will test the lotions...thinking I should pick up some Aloe... or calendula. Thanks for all of your suggestions.
-
kallimom - I have finished 14 and the yuck has not started yet so keep the skin lubricated with the cream a/o lotion your RO has suggested. I use Miaderm, Emu oil, and Calandula cream and my RO is amazed at how well my skin is doing so far. We will all get through this together, don't expect the yuck, do everything to keep it away.
Joy and blessings, Amy Jo

I had number 12 yesterday and it seems my skin is holding up as well. It is definitely getting tanned, but not experiencing any of the "yuck" yet...
Kallimom--thanks for the suggestion about the tank/cami...Kohl's is just up the street from me, so I'm gonna go and look tomorrow!
amyjo49--glad you are doing well too!
Sharon--we are on the exact same schedule...except I still don't know how many boosts I am going to have after my 28 regulars...hope the saline compresses are working for you and that the burn gets under control...hopefully this 2 day break will help out...
gingerstx-WELCOME...hope your treatments go well..we are here if you have any questions!
heathermcd--You are sooo close to be done! Yay!
Praying for all my "rads" sisters...

Tomorrow I will complete rad #15 which put me 1/2 way through and I am doing really well. Skin is looking really good so far and I and getting a little more tired than usual, but not too bad yet. We will see what next week brings. I will be going back to the physical therapist for the neuopathy in my arms. Still lubricating the skin with miaderm and emu oil 3-5x a day. Three weeks and 1 day left until I am done. YEAH
I found some White Stag cotton tank tops in some pretty colors at WalMart for $5 that work really well and are really soft. I wear them under my sweaters and longsleeve blouses.

Hello Ladies, I am new to this thread. I will not be starting my rads until 1st wk of May but curious to know about the SE's as I am going back to work at the same time. I am a teacher and have been off work the entire school year. I have decided to go back for the 4th quarter. A lot of you have mentioned that you are tired after receiving the rads. I am hoping that it won't be too hard going back to school to teach after (10 months off) and beginning rads the next week. I am planning to go for my rads after school and then going home to nap. I hope this works! Thanks for reading my post...any insight will be appreciated.
Hugs,
Laura

Laura53: Tomorrrow will be # 20 out of 30 for me, and I can honestly say that radiation is absolutely nothing compared to chemo. I have a slight pinkness, slight itchiness and sensitivity in the nipple, but that's it. I have felt no fatigue, have never needed a nap, and have been spending 1 1/2 to 2 hours at the gym most days. I am starting back to work tomorrow after having been off for 6 months, and my job is very physically demanding. Everyone is different and only you know how you feel, but for me, I felt I had to start back to work and return to my "normal life", as I am losing my mind being a full time cancer patient. I hope that you too will do well with your treatment and return to work!
