Onc visit/Zometa

Well, I had my Onc visit today. Thankfully, all is looking good. She is happy, so I am happy!

I did freak myself out this morning, as I thought I found a lump under my scar line, but she had a good feel and thinks I was just feeling a rib, as I am "so skinny". (her words!) 

Anyhow, we had a good discussion about Zometa, and she is happy for me to stay on it for the three years. She was firstly surprised that I had heard about the Azure trial (How do you know about that? she asked...I nearly said I bet I knew about it before you!) She said the results from the different studies were conflicting, and although this new study was more encompassing than previous ones, it didn't mean that there would not be a benefit. And she said with me being on Arimidex, and going into early menopause, I was at high risk of Osteoporosis, so at the very least it would help me there. She did say it was totally up to me, if I wanted to stop I could but she wasn't taking people off it.

So, I have decided to continue, and much as I don't love getting the IV, I still think there is no down side.

    KerryMac, you have been so fastidious, so thorough with your treatment. Just look at your signature line! You have left no stone unturned and have kept so well informed. You are well into your third year--WhoHoo!!!

    KerryMac, I had my appt. today also and had the same conversation with my onc and We decided I woun't have my 3d infusion, but it was up to me.  I am ok with that.

    So, shall we call you "slim" now?  Good news!  I will see what my "unhappy" onc says this Thurs.  But I am going ahead with my 3rd one anyway.  Glad that yours noted that there is no evidence there's no benefit.

    Thanks for the update. I am due another zometa this month and was curious what the once were saying. I think I would rather do it than not....benefits still seem to outweigh the risks. Congrats Miss Skinny Minnie!!!!!!

    Kerry~ Congrats on the great checkup! I had Zometa every 3 months X 5 times but not anymore. I have had 2 bone density tests in the past 2 years and they were really good so no signs of osteo after being on Arimidex since March 2009. My oncologist didn't feel I would benefit and was also concerned about insurance coverage as my density was so good. Kind of "good news bad news".I have to hope the Arimidex does its job!

    So, happy your appt went well & that you're just "so skinny", it's a great feeling when they reassure you it's not anything.

    Thanks for reporting back on Zometa.  I also need it for my bones, so I don't think they will try an take it away any time soon.  Isn't it weird when the onc don't seem as up-to-date on the latest research as we are?

    Great news Kerry! I went to the onco today and I asked her about the Zometa as well. She too was surprised I knew so much about it. She said the jury's still out so I'll also continue getting it. At the very least, she said my bones will get some benefit from it.

    It is interesting that most of our Oncs don't seem to be writing Zometa off yet. So, hoping there really is still some benefit for us!

    You may recall, that as soon as the Azure study was discussed at the 2010 San Antonio conference, I posted the results...I was scheduled to have my 6 month Zometa infusion the following week.  My oncologist was at the symposium and after doing much research and discussion, he encouraged me to have the infusion and I subsequently had it.

    Two weeks ago, I had my six month visit and we one again revisited the discussion about Zometa.  I also spoke with my niece who is a medical oncologist.  Both oncologists agree that the Austrian study with premenopausal women using ovarian suppression and taking the Zometa, showed marked favorable results.  They said they were confident that future studies would support BOTH studies that showed that how ever the estrogen was reduced, whether through ovarian suppression or menopause, for those women with ER+ tumors, the Zometa is a worthwhile treatment.

    I look forward to seeing the results of more studies and I look forward to hearing what other women's physicians are saying as well.

    Great news Kerry!  I'm happy to hear that you onc has advised to keep you on Zometa.  I look forward to these posts as sometimes I think my onc is not up to snuff on certain thing. :)

    I chose my onc based on her reputation and the fact that she only treats bc patients. I was somewhat surprised when I discussed Zometa with her in 2009 and she didn't have much to say about it.  At my next visit in May 10, she did prescribe it based on a crappy bone scan.  She is young, caring but I'm not sure how obsessed she is with following the latest research.  Her kids are about the same age as mine, 9 and 12, and family is a priority. 

    Sometimes I wonder if a geek doctor would be better.  Thanks to this board I'm kept up to date on the latest research.

    Thank you Kerry for your post. I also had the same conversation with my Onc and she told me the same as yours did.  I am going forward with my Zometa treatments too. Great news hearing that all is well.
