To all who asked me questions - sorry it took so long to reply.

Vegas - yes I was going to go. Depends on where they stay. I have a favorite place - hope that is one they chose.

Shoulder pain- yep, me too. It started about 1 month after June surgery, figured it would go away. Going thru reconstruction and fills, I stopped PT as it was making me hurt worse in the pec area. Came back with a vengeance after December surgery. Started up PT about 20 days after that surgery, and after 1 month with no progress, went to see a Ortho doc who PT recommend. Ortho Dr took 4 X-Rays to see what is going on. Noticed calcium deposits in the shoulder area and so in addition to Frozen shoulder, I also have Calcific tendinitis. I am getting a cortisone shot on 3/11. Right now my left arm, left shoulder, left part of neck and back are all extremely sore. Hopefully this shot does the trick, and the PT which I will do after.

Dogs and Cats- Have always been a Dog person although I used to pet sit cats growing up. Currently have a female 9 year old ornery German Shepherd.

My real name - sorry, that is one thing I don't want to share on this forum.

Dawne-hope - I loved your story about the cat!  Pre- cancer I used to be a Pet Pal at the Missouri Humane Society. Pet Pals are the ones who walk the dogs that are waiting to be adopted. Our first dog was adopted after being dumped at about 10 days old with her little mates. They were in a box, and the mom was tied to the front door. She couldn't get to the box. It was also freezing outside as it was the dead of winter when this happened.

stlcardsfan - I'm never ceased to be amazed at the cruely of people.  Good for you for loving and caring for them.  I'm a softie when it comes to animals ... the last hard place I had was for cats, and that's been melted too.  When I was a kid and we lived in a REALLY rural area, we had cats, dogs, horses, goats, it seems every stray in the neighborhood showed up in our yard.  :)

Dawn-Hope and stlcardsfan- Your stories brought tears to my eyes!

I wrote earlier that I am a converted cat person also. I was working at the health department when one morning there was meowing from under an employee's car hood. Sure enough a small terrified kitten was located there and had survived the trip. The dog catcher was going to bring him to the pound (and we all know this pretty much means death).

I was just recently married and my husband was working at a site that had rats (more on this later). I took the kitten home. He was too young to catch rats yet so we kept him until he was bigger. Needless to say, he never made it to the job site because we fell in love with him!

We had Mr. T for 14 years. Then another stray walked into our lives for 4 years. One night she never returned. Now we have 2 sister cats we got from the pound 10 years ago. They are beyond precious!

Now to the rats. O2bhealthy and Juli50: do you really have rats? Rats with big gnawing rat teeth? I thought people raised rats to feed to their snakes. Or do you mean cute little white mice. I so confused! Tongue out

wonderland - yes they are rats, the kinda with the long scaly tails and big buck teeth.

They really are sweet although when our last once pasted way 4 years ago we did not replace her (our oldest lived about 3 1/2 years).    Usually people raise the cute little white mice to feed snakes, unless it is a larger snake then they sometimes use rats.  We were very careful in prescreening the families who wanted to adopt Snowy & Izzy's babies because we did not want them to become snake food.

I really didn't know people raised rats. I find this fascinating! I feel so sheltered. But as mentioned earlier, I used to grade restaurants and my goal then was to kill rats. Also, I don't think my cats would like having rats around. Then again, maybe they would.......

Thank you for the warm welcome, Ladies!    I live in Southern California, very near the Cleveland National foothills ..  I love love my cats.  However,  there are not many cats here .. due to the coyote's that run wild in the evenings.

Our dear sweet cat 'Snickers' a house cat, went out for a potty (something she did for years) and never returned. My heart broke.  So now I migrated to the world of dog's - and as it turned out, I simply adore my girls.  We have 2 - 1 a hybrid (Maltese and Yorkie) -- Miss Baily Storm, and a Toy Yorkie -- Emma Rose.  Talk about faithful companions .. Bailey never ever left my side during 12 months of tch/herceptin .. she even sat in the garage waiting for me to return after each and every chemo.

VickiSam - Sorry about Snickers. We never knew what happened to our cat when she didn't return. It's very sad.

Your dogs sound so loving. Like your dogs, my 2 cats never left my side during chemo. At night, one slept on one side of me and the other on my other side. I felt so secure. Out pets know when things aren't right with us.

Wonderland - I think we've had pet rats for almost 20 years now. Ours have never lived more than 2 1/2 years, I think. We usually get females because they are smaller, but they are also more active. The last 2 were males, but 1 only lived about a year. So we have 1 left. My boys always named them after their teachers. Some teachers thought it was an honor, others not so much. LOL

VickieSam - A Maltese-Yorkie mix... what do you call that? a Yorkese?  I'll bet she is very cute. :)

We are all allergic to cats, and a lot of dogs too. We don't have a yard either, so that is why we have rats.

Thanks for sharing all the rat stories. It still amazes me. I asked my best friend who has a menagerie in her house (no rats, though) if she had ever heard of raising rats. She told me I needed to watch "Animal Hoarders" and I would see plenty of rats. I don't know if I can bring myself to watch that show.

Love all this conversation. Thanks CoolBreeze for making me, an outsider here on BCO, feel like an insider!

I'm sorry all you rat lovers ... but I'm one of those who raised rats to feed a snake.  I became incredibly allergic to them.  I'm OK with cats as long as I vacuum every day, but the rats, my eyes swelled up huge when I walked into the room where we kept them.  I finally gave the snake to a science teacher at a high school.

CoolBreeze?  You still here?  I don't know where you stand on dogs or cats (much less rats), but I thought I'd give you a holler 'cause we seem to be missing you.

We can't let you go MIA on your own thread.   Hugs!

Oh, don't shut up, Dawne-Hope.  Keep going, because you'll keep the thread active.  I think the worst thing we can do for CoolBreeze is let this thread languish, and drop off the charts.  That would be sad.

I would post pics of my most recent pets, but they're on my other computer.

Juli .. AKC paperwork calls here a 'Morkie' .. She has the Yorkie coloring, curled tail and long long eye lashes of a Maltese.  She is absolutely the best, kindest dog I've ever met.  We wanted a smaller breed of dog, so we could have them indoors .. Bailey Storm is 12 pounds, should weigh 10 .. now that I am able, she is getting walked twice a day ..  Emma our Toy Yorkie .. AKC registered, 1 litter, is 4.5 pounds - who thinks she is a German Sheppard ... LOL

Holy cow this thread grew fast!!  There's no way I could go back and read all the pages.... but just had to chime in with the Rat People! Tongue out  We had several pairs over 6 or 7 years (as our son was growing up) and LOVED them.  Our very first rat was named Ratty (our son wasn't very creative in the naming dept) and when we had to euthanize her a literally broke down SOBBING at the vet's office as we said "goodbye" to her!!  My son (6 yrs old at the time) had to console me!

And thanks for the compliments on my fluffernutters. :)

The rat vs. cat vs. dog talk reminds me of two funny stories from my youth.

My sister once bought mice at the mall without telling my parents.  I thought they were going to kill her.  But by the time they found out the mice were home and my sister was attached, so she got to keep them.  There were two.  It turns out a boy and girl.  And they made babies.  Let me tell you, baby mice are the cutest freakin' little things on the planet.   But it is true that the parent eat some of the babies.  They ate 2 or 3 of them.  We never saw it.  But we would get up in the morning and one would be gone.  So gross.

I have never been a cat person.  I always had dogs.  We had a cocker spaniel who was such a personality.  I don't think she realized she was a dog.  Most of the time she thought she was one of us - she ate at the dinner table.  LOL.  However, one time she decided to be a cat.  We were in the living room and I looked up and there was our dog walking the tight rope that was the top of the back of the sofa.  It was hysterical - I have never seen a dog do that.

Totally random stories - sorry!  They just popped in my head reading this.

SusansGarden - you have given me a new term: Rat People. I love it! My new topic of conversation is asking my friends and co-workers if they ever heard of people raising rats.

My friends who inspect restaurants will think I have lost my mind! Laughing

Sorry about Ratty. I love my pets also. When I had to euthanize my first cat, I sobbed uncontrollably.

Irr - Random pet stories are the best!

The stories I could tell about bringing our cats to the vets. Hilarious! Anyone have a good story to share?

Ok, here goes. This happened a couple of years ago when my daughter and I brought our 2 sisters cats for shots and a regular checkup. One cat was placed in the carrier and the other one was loose in the car (I know you're not suppose to do that). When we arrived at the vets, the loose one hide under the driver's seat and wouldn't get out. There are wires hanging down and every time we grabbed her to pull out, her head got stuck in the wires like she was being strangled. When we finally got her out, she pooped in the car! It smelled so bad. My windows were broken and we couldn't air out the car when we went inside. Our vet sent his helper out to clean my car. That poor helper.

The visit itself went OK. When we were finished, I placed both cats in the carrier. While I was paying the bill, the cat who had not pooped in the car started making scratching noises. A lady in the waiting room said, "How sweet. That cat is trying to scratch her way out." Cat owners know what is going on when a cat scratches like that: she had pooped and was trying to cover it! So, both cats had to come out and the same vet helper had to clean out the carrier! I know she was glad when we left. Plus now both cats had poop on them.

On the way home, one of them started foaming at the mouth. She looked rabid! In a few short minutes they both were covered with foamy saliva and poop. As soon as I got home, I had to clean the carrier and give both cats an outside bath. And cats DO NOT like baths!

    Then I took a 2 hour nap.

Coolbreeze: You sure know how to get a persons attention with the title of this thread, however!! I could not believe it when I saw that sad, sad title!   Well, I have a thread that I started in August 2010 for people who were starting chemo and a core group of roughly 10-15 of us still post.  You are certainly welcome to come over and join.  Now we just talk about life post-chemo, fears, travels, pre-rads, no rads, hair, our successes, no hair, fun times, aches, hopes, pains etc....!    Come one, come all!   Also, this is a time to meet some friends by getting on the Vegas September trip thread.  Not only will you get to know people who are planning to attend but, if you choose, you will also be booking a weekend away in Vegas with the TaTa Sisterhood!  Good times, woman!
