Any recommendations for a Toronto area Oncologist?
Hello lovely ladies,
well, I concluded today time to find a new oncologist. Mine is Dr. Dhesy at Juravinski and I don't think she has my treatment in her best interest.
I cannot get answers about zometa, lupron etc. My appointment this morning at 9:30 was cancelled. After I drove there 40 min. each way with gas at $1.15 a litre I am a bit pissy!
Now I cannot see her until March 3.
I want a new oncologist! Can anyone in the Toronto area recommend one that they feel most confident about?
Also, I don't know how to do this...do I ask my family doctor for a referral?
Thanks!
Christine

Christine!!
I am so sorry you are getting the run around, yep, it sounds like time for a change.
I really like mine, I am at North York General Hospital. Not sure if you want to go there, we are a bit further to travel for you than say PMH, but about the same as if you went to Sunny-brook.
It is a smaller hospital, but I have been very, very happy with my treatment, follow-up etc. My Dr (Fishman) is very organised, young, and really keeps on top of things. I normally see her in her offices, rather than the hospital, which is nice too.
And I live right close by, so we could meet for a coffee when you had your appt!!
Do you want her details??

Kerry, I would love your onc's details! It is farther, but as you say if we CAN meet for a coffee, even better!
I am just so stressed today, and likely not fair to say my onc doesn't have my best interests, it's just she's so unavailable...so fiercely busy. Our meetings are not more than 10 minutes and the last one I didn't even see her. I saw a scary sub in. And...today was the icing on the cake, I drove home in tears.
I really want an onc who is up on things as well. Sounds like you have a good one!
Thanks much!

Yeah, it is just her, no nurse to be fobbed off on. And she always gives me plenty of time, and always gets back to me the same day if I call with a question.
Anyhow, she is Dr Paula Fishman - 416-640-0892, her office is 4800 Leslie Street (just north of 401) And she has free parking!
I have no idea how you go about getting referred to her?? Maybe just call her office and ask, your Family Dr might have to do it.
I've been very happy with NYGH.

Christine:
I am treated at Joseph Brant Hospital here in Burlington (very small hospital but very good) - they are affiliated with Juravinsky also but Dr. Calista Phillips is here and spends quite a lot of time with me when I have questions, etc. - this is a lot closer to you than GTA so...
Your PCP is who you should get to refer you that's what I did and it worked well.
Dr. Phillips is very well liked by the cancer patients in this community and I can tell you I like her as well - when I told her last month that I was a little depressed because I didn't have a purpose in life she responded with "well, why don't you come and volunteer at the hospital" - I started my volunteer work there today!
And I will meet you for coffee too.
Sandy

Thank you! Kerry and Sandy!
Sandy if I do go to Kerry's onc (I just had a heebie jeebie experience at Brant when I had my bone scan there) we should still meet for coffee
That's a very insightful thing to recommend, ie. volunteering. You could give so much hope and advice to people going through it.
I'll call my family doc and see about a referral. Free parking works for me too, haah.
Thanks all, have a good night, I feel better now
