TOMORROW
I haven't been to the board in a couple of weeks. I guess I just needed a little break from the BC worries and discussions. But I am going for my yearly mammo tomorrow and am totally dreading it. I just don't trust that they will find anything that might be there. I won't leave there as I always used to feeling secure that I'm not going to get breast cancer because I'm keeping up with my mammograms and breast health. DUH..... That's what I thought but....... So one question for you ladies. Why do we have to go for a mammo if we've already had scans within the last few months??

I get an annual MRI instead of mammograms.

I get both MRI and mammos, and having the latter seems crazy since MRIs are far superior with imaging. My surgeon maintains, however, that having mammo and MRI "covers all ground".
I'll be praying for you! When you go in, focus on all of us here cheering you on.

I concur with the above postings. MRI are far superior, now with that being said .. Mamo tomorrow, and set up MRI for next go round. Request/ insist on MRI, instead. If you have insurance, and your Oncologist is up on latest, bell Standard information as well as clinical trial studies .. this is the way to go. Insurance companies shy away from MRI, due to their expense.

I do both as well...hate the MRI, but think it is worth it.

Barb, better safe than sorry. I have almost identical diagnosis as you do and I want them to watch very closely all the time. Good luck, if they are good results, all the better to put your mind at ease. If they turn up something not so good, they found it now and can treat. Either way, you win. I will hold your cyber hand through all of it!!

My onc and primary always say it's better to have the test and have peace of mind, rather than not do anything. (((hugs))) and I'm hoping that by tomorrow you are feeling a little less anxious.

Just had mine and glad it is over, no MRI just mamo and ultrasound of lumpy bumpy area.
Good luck to you Barb and hope all will be normal !

My problem is that I aways had a lot of peace of mind following my yearly mammos, more like a false sense of security. All the while a stage III tumor was missed during a year of having 3 separate mammo appointments in 6 months and cleared. 3 mths later I found the 5/2 cm stage III tumor. So now I'm really skeptical about going. I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't go. I'll just take Ativan and deal with it.

Thanks Sherri, I do know you get this.I wishi i would have discussed all this with my onc last visit. I don't think I can get an MRI last minute. Mayble I'll try stopping in to his onc nurse and ask her. I just know they were watching me for a lot of micro calcs for 3 mammos before clearing me, so I know they're there along with dense breast tissue. I'm going to try to talk to a radiologist first. I'll let you know how it all goes when I get home tomorrow nite,.

Barb....I haven't had a mammo or MRI since Dx....no reason since I had a bilat....will be thinking of you tomorrow....I have my 3 month visit on the 24th....
-
Barb, see if you can get the MRI in 6 months time.
I have mine more or less 6 months apart, so it means there would be two different opportunties to "catch" something.
-
Barb, good luck today! Just had mine as well. It is interesting that my onc would prescribe PET scans, MRIs, nuclear bone scans and mammos but not breast MRI. He said there's a lot of false positives with breast MRI???
Mary and Kerry, if you don't mind me asking, what has been your experience with breast MRI? Thanks.
-
Barb,
You are soooooo in my prayers!!!
I know the waiting is not fun!!!!!!!!!!!
HUGS!!!!!

Good question....no mammo for me either now. I wonder why my dr is saying no scans at all after rads unless I have symptoms and some of ya'll are still getting them yearly. My mammo was read wrong too, I was told I was fine an about a month later told I have stage III bc. I was furious and lost all faith in mammo's as well. I understand more now...I was 34 and had no family hx of bc. I did have calcium deposits & a huge "baseball" in that breast and none in my other which aparently wasn't a red flag for them either.

Hi Barb and (((HUGS)))!!!
I had a bilateral mx so I won't have the "pleasure" of mamo's anymore, but I understand your trepidation. My 6.5 cm PRIMARY (there were other smaller ones) was never found on any of my yearly mamos. Go figure. I'd insist on an MRI too, or BSGI (breast specific gamma imaging) which the Brem Foundation is researching. Here's the link for more info on BSGI:

Let us know how the day went!
Love,

Thanks all for your words of comfort. Had the mammo done yesterday, got thru it and I guess they'll call me if there are any issues.

Barb - just wanted to let you know you're on my mind and I'm sorry that this damn disease has to cause this kind of stress. (((hugs)))
