how about parsnip soup?  With carrots for sweetness!  mmmmmmmm

When our first monster arrived, we didn't want them exposed to excessive amounts of tv.  One of the things that went was the local news. We also dropped pretty much all basic tv watching---all the variations of law and order or CSI or whathave you.  It was AMAZING how a month later I felt so much less stressed and generally happier. I also found I had a much more positive view of the world.  I realized how much time and energy I was using on watching/learning/thinking/worrying about things over which I had no control and what a negative outlook on life it was giving me.  I realized I was going around expecting the worst.   I never went back to watching local news and actually don't watch much news period [exception for certain lefty things like jim leher and cnn and those talking heads on Sunday morning].

I have friends of all political/religous persuations and we manage to have reasonable discussions about all sorts of political stuff without ever resorting to name calling or saying one or the other of us is an "American hater" or what have you.  I know on one level that there are lots and lots of basically mean spirited people out there in the universe but why should I have to include them in my life?

    heres to the ignore button!

Some people take things written on a board much too seriously. There are others who just laugh most of it off. That's me....I'm laughing. You guys on the right are trying to shut this thread down. Please stop it!

excuse me for interjecting...once the Turkish government formally admits what it did to the Armenians I will listen to talk of them having anything right. I am not talking about individuals here, I am talking about the governmental entity that denies the wholesale slaughter and/or relocation (march til death) of 1.5 million christian armenians (including my grandparents..). I do not cast blame on the turkish citizens as my father chastised me as a teen when I was enraged over what had happened and he told me the best revenge was living well...this from a man who was 6 and saw his parents murdered (oh yeah, he really was not born in Canada as his father saw what was coming and had secured papers for his children) ...he said the people alive now no more killed them than I was killed then. Hard at the time to get my mind around but I eventually understood. But the formal denial of it rankles. They are trying desperately to get into the European union but it looks like that will not happen until the admission is made. One on one, I have come to befriend a number of turkish people, but as far the government goes...lets get real.

Surprise, it's after hours on a Friday, and the deletions have begun.  What was in Linda's post that violated any rules?  You are not allowed to delete a post because you do not agree with someone's opinion, otherwise, there are hundreds of posts I would have deleted before I put several individuals on ignore,  What I can't see, can not upset me.  I would like the delete squad to have the courage to admit who they are, and exactly what rule was broken.  From the responses several have made this afternoon, I am assuming there have been vast stereotypical statements regarding the Egyptians, the Middle East in general, and Muslims specifically.  Stereotypes can be so offensive, yet no one is deleting your posts.  Not all Muslims are terrorists, not all terrorists are Muslims, and not all Catholic priests are child molesters!  Stop the baiting and trying to control the speech of others.  Melissa has warned you about reporting posts that do not violate rules.

Anyone have a really good recipe for cornbread dressing?  As a Yankee in the south, I only know how to do stuffing, which is not at all like the Southern preferred dressing.  Found a pretty good recipe on Paula Dean's site, but would like to try one that someone here had actually cooked. Thought I might try one of the brussel sprout recipes as an additional side.

Love the avatars!  Congratulation on the solo shower, Blue.  Hope your brother continues to show improvement and that he is soon off the respirator, Barbara.

Ignore, ignore, ignore!  The silence is golden!

I have to say, the ignore button can also be kind of frustrating.  You miss lots of the conversation .. but, speaking for myself, I also don't get as agitated.

    I like Blue's attitude!

Thanks, folks! He is back down sedated after the weaning attempt today but tomorrow they will try again.

What is UP with the after-hours deleting? I mean, Blue created this thread based on the concept of NO DELETING! What part about no deleting do you deleters not understand?????????

Annette, it is genocide and a tragedy what Turkey did to the Armenians. As bad as the Holocaust but on a smaller scale. Horrific nonetheless.

IJBCA, if you find that cornbread dressing recipe, send me the link, okay?  Or, post it here?

I'm not a native Southerner, either; but the cornbread dressing the locals bring to our Thanksgiving pot-luck ... I mean, "covered dish," luncheons are delish!

I just spent the last 20 minutes looking at Shepherd's Pie recipes.  Looks like you can put 'most anything in there for veggies, although I didn't see any with rutabagas.  :)

(I've had CNN on in the background all afternoon.  Amazing stuff.  Worrisome, yes, because it's hard to predict what will happen next... but, amazing.)

We just came back from Carrabba's with lunch for two for tomorrow: Baked rigatoni with Italian sausage with fennel, fresh mozarella, romano, primavera tomato sauce and most of a huge caesar salad. Fodd is not high on my list right now but I could go for some chocolate in an hour or two.

I better lay low or I might get deleted again.

otter----they have recipes for shepard's pie?  you did read the part about my DH making the stuff---- DH don't need no stinking recipe!!!!!!   ;-)

    dice the rutabags!

what happened to the armenians was horrific.  what happened to the jews during world war 2 was horrific. what happened during the cultural revolution was horrific.  what happened under pol pot was horrific.  what happened in former yugoslavia was horrific.  what happened in rwanda was horrific.

how come human beings are so good at repeating the horrific?  :-(  how come when we say never again, we only seem to mean until the next generation comes along and forgets what happened before?

Ah yes, it must be the weekend starting again.  Shoot, I'll probably get another PM from one of them (it's happened before) sometimes I am just insulted on the thread.

I have a recipe for cornbread stuffing that has breadcrumbs and cornbread in it if anyone is interested - got in in Calgary from a lady from Houston and it's traveled everywhere with me but not sure it's the "true" cornbread dressing.

Blue - your chinese food sounded wonderful - I had soup out of a can - I've managed to get the flu (and yes, I did get a flu shot).

How can you people eat Chinese food with all that MSG they use in it?  I used to love it but wondered why I konked out on the bed after eating it and got the shakes.  Found out it was the MSG!  Now I don't eat any restaurant food unless they assure me it has no MSG in it.  That stuff was originally used to tenderize meat so I can only imagine what it does to our insides.  I even had to stop eating all KFC chicken and foods because they said they used MSG in everything.  We eat out very seldom now.  Such a shame since DP loves Chinese food!  MSG does not affect everyone like it does me.  I must be allergic to it or something.  You all are so lucky to be able to eat all those yummy foods I can't!

annettek, your father is a wise man.

Turkey will not become a member of the EU until it admits to the genocide.  However, there is very strong resistance to admitting that.

3mon, there is a great book about genocide by Susan Power (she has also written several articles), and it does an amazing job in showing HOW a genocide can occur.  Hitler infamously said, when he put the holocaust into motion, "Who remembers the Armenians?"  Well, we certainly do, and we must not allow people to forget what happened to the Armenians.

Medigal -- Many (if not most) Chinese restaurants in Toronto are aware of the dangers of MSG and advertise the fact that their food does not contain it.  Wish you could come up here and FEAST and ENJOY -- with no nasty after-effects!

    Cheers!  Linda

The deleting squad have been really over the top successful today. Lewing is banned - yes banned - for saying nothing that violates the rules of BCO. Some people really need to control themselves and quit pressing the "report this post" button whenever something with which you do not agree is posted. Goodness knows there have been a lot of things posted here that rile me but I remember I am a grown up and either respond to the issue or carry on with life.
Stop pressing the "report this post"button!!

    Lassie,

It's clear they can't stop pressing the button.  Perhaps they need psychological counseling or some other method of venting their hatred and frustration?

Goodness, I hope the deleters don't act this way at their workplace or face-to-face with people - they sure wouldn't keep their jobs for very long!

    Laura GTO:

Not true about being able to order any dish without MSG - when we were in the U.S. whenever DH wanted food without MSG he was offered one or on occasion two dishes in each Chinese restaurant - perhaps it is different from place to place.

I don't really see too many posts that were deleted.  What happened to the fact that I thought Melissa was going to let us know who the "deleters" are.  Even if they are using fake IDs, it would be helpful to expose them and they may quit if they are going to be exposed.

Laura:  I found the same thing as Sandy with the MSG.  Certain restaurants will tell you which dishes have MSG but most Chinese ones put it in everything and I didn't have a choice.  They might have one or two dishes (I didn't particularly want) without MSG but basically, it's not a big choice in the Chinese places.  One steakhouse we like said the steaks come already soaked in MSG so it's best to stay away if I have an MSG problem.  I was shocked to find out that KFC uses it on everything because I used to love my kFC chicken!  They said it's even in the cole slaw!   What is it with these places that they can't give something flavor without MSG.  My home cooked foods are delicious and I never have used MSG in anything!  It's just that sometimes I don't feel like cooking and it would be nice to just get a box of something already prepared.  Oh well, there are worse problems to have I guess.

    Hiya, Medigal!

Even if Melissa wanted to tell us who the deleters are, the deleters did their childish work after hours, so Melissa probably won't see it until Monday.  In the meantime, lewing is banned.  Good work, buttheads.

Melissa has said there are IT things in the works but I haven't heard anything definite.
