Any "fuller figure (or former) " warrior survivors out there?
Hey all,
I just wanted to touch base with those ladies that are fuller figure now or those that were fuller figured when they were diagnosed.
It would be nice to get some opinions, suggestions, advice, on what we can do get the weight off in the safest way possible....so we can get this "risk factor" under control.
When diagnosed, I was about 40lbs overweight (but lost over 50lbs in 2008 and was able to keep it off)...I just got done with chemo 3 weeks ago and put on about 20lbs with that...so I need to lose a grip of weight now.
I start rads in the next week to 10 days, but I'm feeling good enough to get start getting this extra weight off.
I welcome any and all suggestions as to what others are doing or have done to lose weight during their own journey.
What are your doctors saying?
How are you staying motivated?
What is your own research telling you about losing weight after dx?
What weight loss programs will do us the best good as far as nutrition goes?
What books are helping you (or have helped you) achieve this goal?
Let's do what we can to help each other out if we can!
peace and prayers,
Tori

Hello, ToriGirl, I don't have this particular concern. I just wanted to pop in, though, and ask if you don't mind not calling all breast cancer patients warrior survivors? I know some may be shocked at my objection. For all you know, some of us might be total wimps. And any idiot survives early stage cancer. A survivor is a person who manages to live through an event that had a very strong potential for killing him or her. I can tell you that Stage IIB, for one, is NOT such and event. I know we all see this differently but some of us find these terms insulting, as though we were playacting and we just want to be allowed to be ourselves. I, personally, like "sisters". Some prefer "women" "patients", or fellow bc-ers. All of those are accurate descriptions that do not label everyone as something she - or he -is not.
If a person calls herself a warrior survivor or a pink soldier, etc... that's ok with me. Just as long as they don't think I an any of that too.

Hi ToriGirl!
I'm glad that you are putting your energy into making positive strides in your life. You can do it! Be extra patient with yourself, and don't be surprised if your energy drops during rads. Walking is a great place to start. If it is too cold where you live, you can use your local mall to burn up some calories. Dr. Oz (Oprah's doc she features) says the best approach for exercise is what is easiest for you, with the least hassle. For him, it is a stationary bike at home that he can just jump on.
My son has a Wii system, and the WiiFit is really fun, and so encouraging. You have virtual characters cheering you on, and the exercises last a few minutes at a time, and there are lots of fun activities. I also am using Netflix that has workouts that stream online (you don't need to wait to get mailed the DVD). That service is great, is less than $10 a month, and you don't need to hassle getting to a gym, or getting out in cold weather.
I hope this helps!

I'm so happy to see this thread.
I'm fat. No way to deny that. I could easily lose 100lbs. It's disheartening but I refuse to just give in because I'm fat. Since everything in my life is feeling out of control right now, weight is one area where I feel like I can have a bit of control.
I have PCOS and hypothyroid so weightloss is HARD for me. \
I'm interested in ideas for eating cheaply and family friendly. I simply cannot afford all organic stuff to feed my family of six on a single income.
I was eating very, very well before my lumpectomy and axillary node dissection (last Thursday 1/27). RIght now,I'm eating whatever meals my wonderful friends are bringing in for us. ANd they are very appreciated!
I'm considering buying a juicer to make it easier for me.
COngrats on your weightloss!
-
Thanks for chiming in ladies...I appreciate it!
pejkug3-My initial weight loss back in 2008 took a good 8-10 months to do, but here I am...post chemo and having put about 25 pounds back on during that...UGH...
I just found out that I can not lose weight during rads either...something to do with how the precise aim of the radiation each time they do a treatment...so no more than a 5 lb gain/loss for the 7 weeks of rads...I'm a bit disappointed, but I get it.
Maybe we can help each other out on this part of our journey? I mean, I know there are other threads out there that have you being accountable for your exercise, or helping with motivation, but sometimes being able to have a group of people that "get it" in regards to being "fluffy" or "full figured" or whatever you want to call it helps in a different way all together.
I just plain love food...always have....like so many people say, "It never judges you, nor talks back to you...and it always seems to make me feel better" (even if the feeling is fleeting)
Healthy recipes, good videos, websites, and diet changes are some of the things we can talk about...or about how we are feeling about this weight that we have to lose...
We can vent, cheer each other on or just check on each other...the possibilities are endless..
Hadley, I would love to hear more about the Oprah thing if you can report back to us too!
MissBianca-Thank you for the suggestions...please feel free to come back and give us more!
All I know is....weight is something we CAN control..unlike this "crap" that has invited itself into our lives....It does me wonders to know that I'm not the only one feeling like I do and that there are ladies out there that want to do something about it...
peace and prayers,
Tori

YES! I would be interested in keeping in touch/accountable with you.
I'm starting from scratch on health eating and exercise. I'm planning to see if my insurance will cover a dietician/nutritionist as soon as I can.
I'm planning to buy a juicer and hire a personal trainer for a few sessions after we get our tax refund. I think 2011 isn't going to be my favorite year, but when you're handed lemons...
I'm mostly clueless. I grew up on "Cream or Whatever" over noodles - dinner is served! And my husband is only recently willing to even taste veggies.
Yes, please - I need your help!

Hi Girls! I would like to join in. This thread is exactly what I am looking for. I have been trying to eat all natural for the last month and I have lost 10 pounds so far. I would love to find other people who are trying to do the same to keep me motivated. I am 10 down, but have a long way to go. 2 people who were going through treatment at the same time as me have got their cancer back and 1 is not going to make it. So, I finally found my motivation to begin. I am overweight and am high risk with being HER2 positive. My breast surgeon reccomended a book called Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman early in my treatment and I am now trying to eat similar to Dr. Fuhrman's diet. But, I also read the research on this link: http://cancer.ucsf.edu/_docs/crc/nutrition_breast.pdf
Basically this a summary of what I am TRYING to follow:
* Eat 8 to 10 colorful fruit and vegetable servings daily
* Two to three pieces of fruit
* One cup or more of vegetables with lunch and dinner
* Consume 30 to 45 grams of fiber daily
* You will likely meet your fiber goal if you eat 8 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables plus one
serving of beans/legumes or at least two servings of whole grains daily.
* Avoid processed and refined grains/flours/sugars
* Keep WHITE off your plate: bread, pasta, rice, cream sauces, cakes, and more.
* Limit meats and whole milk dairy products(I am trying to not have them at all)
* Include healthy fats like cold-water fish, flaxseed, walnuts, soybeans, olive oil, avocados
* Eat 2 Tbsp ground flax daily
* Limit alcohol consumption
* Drink 1 to 4 cups of green tea daily
* Maintain serum 25 (OH)-vitamin D levels above 35 ng/mL
* Drink plenty of fluids, water or non-caffeinated beverages, daily to help meet fluid needs
* Engage in daily physical activity to help achieve and maintain a healthy weight
I
would love to find tips and motivation to stay with it!!!
Thanks!
Lisa

Hi Lisa!-Welcome! Sorry it has to be under these circumstances though...
Thanks for telling us about what you are doing to be "in control" and get on the track of eating better, losing weight, and just having a better lifestyle....
There are so many books out there and it can be overwhelming if you don't even know where to start, that is for sure!
I am slowly changing my eating habits, but geez, it sure is difficult.
I start rads in the next week, so I can't lose too much weigh too quickly, or it will mess up the precision of the rads treatments, but if I incorporate little by little, by the time rads are done, I can really up the ante.
PejKug3- I see that you just had surgery on 1/27....hopefully you are recovering well.
Once you get your pathology and a plan in place will really make things a bit more manageable for you.
I understand completely about being "clueless" on all this stuff...like I said earlier, it is so overwhelming.
So, that's why I thought starting this thread would help us all that need it...
We can learn together and pass on what we learn to others!
Looking forward to hearing more from you both!
We can do this!
peace and prayers,
Tori

Hi ladies. I heard an acronym that can help remind you what is healthy when shopping.
It is: Vernon Watches N F L Sports
V : veggies
W: whole grains
N: nuts
F: fruits
L: legumes
S: seeds
Another tip is to shop the outer perimeter of the grocery store first, where the fresh stuff is.
I know what you mean about the costs of eating healthy. The cheapest, most nutritious meal I have found that makes a lot is a crockpot of pinto or red beans, made into chili or New Orleans style red beans and rice.
The chili is extra nutritious because you can use diced tomatoes (they have cancer fighting lycopene) and use either ground turkey or extra lean beef (or just veggie).
My easy chili:
A bag of dried red kidney beans. Sort on flat surface for bad beans and tiny rocks. Rinse and soak overnight. VERY IMPORTANT or you will have tales to tell on the Queen of Gas Contest thread!
Cook slowly in a crockpot with a little salt. Beans will expand so use enough water.
Add large can of diced tomatoes that say "for chili" and add ground meat (or not) when beans are about 3/4's done. (brown meat on stovetop first)
Taste test and adjust as needed with basic spices. (It's usually good to go.) You can top with light sour cream or light cheddar cheese.
Cheap fruit: bananas, and the bags of fruit, like apples, rather than picking singly.
Salad tip: tear up lettuce and store in large ziploc bag (can add shredded purple cabbage or carrots). You'll be more likely to eat it if it's easy.
Diet tip: Celery is the only food known to actually burn more calories digesting it than the actual calorie count!
Hope this helps!

Great tips!
I have developed the habit of either binging ("Heck, I'm fat anyway, I may as well eat all the crap I can today and start over tomorrow.")or starving (I have no idea what to eat! All this stuff will kill me!)
Bad, bad, bad.
Lately, I've been living on a stew that it primarily veggie (sweet potato, potato, carrots, celery, onion) and some beef roast. It is SO good. A friend suggested seasoning it with cinnamon and garlic. I wouldn't have thought of it on my own, but it is my current favortie food.
Walked 2 miles on my treadmill varying inclines from 0-5.0 - 40 minutes in all. Three days in a row this week!
I've lost 35lbs since July. But I have a good 100lbs more to go. Shameful, really. But you cannot change what you cannot admit.
My family had pizza and garlic bread for dinner tonight. Piiiizzzzaaaa. I LOVE pizza.
I had chicken fajitas - chicken breasts, red, yellow, and green peppers, onions and seasonings on two whole wheat shells. Yum-O. And I didn't cave to my favorite food.
-
Hi ladies, I too would like to join this group, I am 5'4 and weigh 178 big fat pounds. I can admit it because it's my own fault that I got this big. I love food, I love everything about it, from buying it to cooking it. I can go to a grocery store and spend a couple of hours easily just roaming around looking at everything. I have at least 50 cookbooks and I browse through them like a man drools over a playboy magazine. I can't seem to stop thinking about food either. Food and my love of jewelry that I buy from the shopping channels is just about my only real happiness. I have depression over my weight but I am not about to add anymore pills to my daily life so I try my best to cope. I do exercise by walking outdoors or getting on the treadmill just about everyday. I tell myself if I'm going to eat it then I'm also going to walk it off. It's how I get to pig out and not get any heavier.
Help me or I'm doomed to get recurring cancer, I pray I don't. I know I am supposed to be losing this extra weight but I can't seem to find what's going to work for me. I think I'll start with writing everything I eat down and weighing myself once a week. I'm choosing Wednesday's for me. Thanks for starting this thread, I feel I will be holding myself accountable to all of you and I don't want to let anyone down by failing.
Thanks for your support, this is just what I needed. I'll be checking back in everyday to talk with all the rest of you ladies. We can do this!!!
-
Welcome chiefswife! I am glad that we are getting others to join, because I think the more we have to encourage each other, the better!
I sooooo understand your love for food...it has been the same for me for many, many years. I could always find a reason to eat....doesn't matter how I feel either....
I know for me (still going through active treatment) not having a job right now leaves me getting bored too easily and ending up in the kitchen grazing....I need to get a hobby!
One day at a time....and with the help of our sisters, we will do it!
Peace and prayers,
Tori

I'm joining. I can't jog or run a marathon so the other threads don't work for me. I did go to a dietician for 6 months and my weight each week would vary by 5-8 pounds!! She couldn't believe it.....sigh.
I eat a salad with chicken for dinner 6 nights a week. Healthy lunches and cereal every morning or toast. There is NO reason I should still be overweight!!! I've stopped alcohol entirely the night before my double mast over 2 years ago and it hasn't made a difference. Go figure.
I know some of the meds I'm on keep the weight on. I ate NO carb for 5 months and didn't lose an ounce!!!! My brother lost 75 pounds doing that. Not fair.
I only shop the outer aisles too. I couldn't even eat what is posted above for everyday. That seems like so much food!!
Help me!!!!!
-
Oh, meant to add! I went to Jenny Craig before diagnosis. The plan they had for me was way too much food! I kept telling them I didn't eat that much. But, they saw "fat chick" and insisted I had to eat their plan. I gained 6 pounds the first month and quit. They were astounded. Wish I could have gotten my money back.....sigh.

Welcome Glad2BHere and Barbe1958!
Glad2BHere..I know you posted earlier, and I'm sorry for not seeing it sooner!
LOVE your tips! It seems like a good plan...did you incorporate little by little or just start it "full up"? I have heard that flaxseed and soy are a "no-no" with hormone positive bc..can you explain why it's okay when you are eating this way? Thanks!
Barb1958...Girl, I see you all over this board!
I love reading your "no holds barred" responses! Great to have you here too! I can't imagine how frustrated you must be with all you are doing to lose weight and nothing happening...Is it safe to assume that you have had your thyroid checked and all that other stuff? Man, there has got to be something out there that can help you out!! I'll be cheering you on...along with everyone on this thread in the same boat!
MIssBianca-love your tips as well...the acronym seems easy to remember too! The chili sounds perfect during all this cold weather....Come back and give us more wisdom when you can!
So, sounds like meat should be out (or at least limited)....is organic a must? Is organic in a can or plastic okay? Can I microwave my food, or is that out? Is walking okay or do I have to do aerobic exercise for it to count as beneficial? There are so many conflicting information out there and I just want a place to start.....
Thanks for sharing everyone!
peace and prayers,
Tori

Hi,
When I got bc, my dh got on a health and weight loss program, it has evolved to where he does almost all the shopping and meal prep at least once a day. THANK GOODNESS, but he has lost 55 lbs and Ive lost pretty much none. He goes to the gym 5 days a week and I ... um, dont. But I look like I have and dropped a pant size!! We only use brown rice which once you get used to it is pretty good. Complex carbs are better than no carbs. Whole grain products are available in so much more variety now. Even Cheese-Its and Eggos come in whole grain. Pasta does too and its more filling than the no-nutritional value plain pasta.
I like to make better choices, like using the whole grain varieties. Get a yogurt instead of carbs for a snack. OH.. Im a Diabetic and Hypothyroid and have been this size (going up or down one size) for at least 6 years. Its hard to lose weight.
I appreciate the open talk and suggestions and support in here.

Good morning ladies, I am pretty much going to have to lose my extra 40 pounds by sheer determination and all the willpower I have. I can't afford to join a gym, I can't afford a personal trainer, I can't afford to try Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers. I am also home quite a bit everyday all by myself. Myhusband and son went to work for this company and they are gone long hours, so I sit here with my tv, computer and the treadmill. I seriously enjoy getting on the treadmill because it's my only exercise period.
Today I am cooking pot roast in my pressure cooker, I don't eat a lot of red meat but when I do I love it.And I will exercise later today. I have never tried an actual diet, like a low carb, high protein. I will lose weight simply by cutting back portions and adding in more movement of my body. I am not much of a salad person.
Thanks everyone for posting your tips, I need all the help I can get.
-
Yep, I'm fluffy! I could definitely stand to lose 50+ pounds. I love food, and I do NOT love to exercise. When I was a teenager, I was very active, played lots of high school sports (lacrosse, swimming, running), but that was 20 years ago. I've got to figure out how to get motivated! I know that diet and exercise are certainly beneficial in terms of lowering the likelihood of recurrence. So, a few weeks ago, I started exercising again. I walk for about an hour, sprinkled with a minute or two of jogging here and there in that hour. I've found that if I listen to music while I'm exercising, it goes by much faster. I can't afford a gym or personal trainer either, wish I could!
I love to cook as well as eat! I've made it my mission to find healthier ways to cook the foods I love. Cooking Light magazine has a website with healthier recipes that really do taste good. I know how important fruits and veggies and whole grains are...I just wish they weren't so expensive! I look at the weekly ads from the local grocery stores to see what produce specials they are having, and try to plan my meals around those.
I've lost about 8 pounds in the last 6 weeks, which is amazing to me. I say "about" because my weight really fluctuates from day to day, and I don't know why. From one day to the next, my scale can show 3-4 pounds of loss OR gain, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. I think it's better to weigh less often, and to also consider how my clothes are fitting as a gauge of how I'm doing.
I'm glad you brought up this topic, Tori! I know that being in a group of women to motivate and support each other certainly can't hurt.
And now, I'm going to go out for my walk!
-
I've heard the no soy for ER+, but never heard anything about flaxseed. I have flaxseed evey day to help keep my cholesterol down.
-
Hi Girls!
ToriGirl -I don't eat soy either, so it is mainly fruits, veggies and beans. Besides the occasional distrstraction like PIZZA, at least I feel like I am eating healing foods to give myself a better chance. I haven't heard anything bad about flax in any of my sources, so I will have to check it out. I know what you mean about all the conflicting information. I just feel that anything I am doing better, is better than what I was doing before.
I shop at Trader Joes and we have a lot of local produce places here, so it makes it pretty cheap. I still use frozen fruit and veggies, but make sure there are no added chemicals.I am not much of a cook, so would love some good food tips.
Barb1958 my weight loss has been really stubborn and I think it is due to my meds. Tamoxifen has weight loss as a SE, but I am sure it is the oppisite. Our medications makes this journey especially hard and frustrating. When I take a bite, I try to think "Is this helping my body?" I figure eventually eating healthy will pay off. It is hard to stay motivated when you don't see results, so that is why I am here. I need you girls to help me stick to it.
I just found out I have Mono and am out of work for 2 weeks. I just want my life back!!!! I had my pity party yesterday and ate horribly. I am back to myself today. I can't exercise for awhile, but at least have some time to look for recipes.
We can do this!!!!!!
Lisa

I think In will join in here too, and after reading txstardust's msg I went out and did my walk first, so thank you.
I fit into the "former" catagory I guess. I lost weight during chemo, but my goal coming out was to keep those pounds off and that is what I have been working on doing. I'll add more later, one part of my plan is to spend less time sitting in front of the computer.
-
So why did I go to Walmart and buy chocolate covered almonds and mint rosebuds this morning? Why do I sabotage myself? Why!!
-
I took my walk/run, and feel pretty good! The weather here has warmed up significantly, and being out in the sunshine was great. The best part - I'm done with exercising for the day, and now I can relax!
Barbe, I went out last night at 10:30 to get some pita chips and hummus - ended up getting that PLUS ice cream PLUS cinnamon rolls...because they just look so darn delicious! Just remind yourself that change doesn't happen overnight, especially changing your approach to food. And as long as you can dole out the treats a little bit at a time, it doesn't have to be your downfall.
Besides, those chocolate covered almonds do have almonds in them - that's healthy, right? And you get points if it's dark chocolate.
-
LOL I like the way you think txstardust!!! We all have our weaknesses, mine is donuts........but you're right change doesn't happen over night, it's gonna be hard work and determination to get us to our goals. For me I just want to get to 140, if I stay there the rest of my life I'll be thrilled. I have been pretty busy today around this house, we are listing it for sale sometime in March so I have alot to do. I am going in right now and getting on my treadmill for an hour then I'm gonna sit down and eat supper. Have a great rest of your day ladies.
-
Wow! I love that more and more ladies are joining in! It made me smile to see you all conversing and and getting us all motivated! I feel empowered right now and that's what I need to get where I want to be!
Barbe1958---I've always had a weakness for the sweet stuff....and it was hard to stay away from it during chemo...I love Dubble Bubble Bubblegum...I love powdered doughnuts or Krispy Kreme glazed cream filled...and ice cream...My DH could take it or leave it...so frustrating...
Chiefswife...140-145 is my goal too...so that means I have a "grip" of weight to lose...I know I will have to do it small increments or it will be too overwhelming to think about...along with all the other things I worry about...
txstardust--Welcome! Congrats on getting your walk in today...."woo hoo!" for losing the 8 pounds! My DH and I went looking at TVs today as ours just crapped out on us a few day ago...so I did a lot of walking and we are going roller skating tonight...I haven't been for years, but I"m gonna try and get my big bootie out there!
Kathy044--Congrats on losing weight (sorry it had to be with chemo though) and hooray for you for keeping if off! I'd love to hear more about what you are doing to keep the weight off if you don't mind...
LOVE all the input! Keep it coming!
peace and prayers,
Tori

I'm so happy to see so many girls in here!
I'm having trouble eating at all. I don't know what gives with that?! Usually, I'm a stress eater. Apparent, BC has changed that.
I missed my treadmill walk today - got all sidetracked with the kids all home and DH at work. But tomorrow I'll be back at it.
Chicken chili for dinner. We'll see how that goes...
-
Hi ladies - I am definitely fluffy at 5'9" and 205 pounds. And Tamoxifen is clearly not helping as I have gained five pounds since starting. Joined a gym with my son but he is not very good at motivation, so I am glad to find this thread!
-
Had chicken cut into salad last night for dinner!!
-
Chicken is good, mayo is bad. try mixing with a light salad dressing or adding a flavored mustard instead of all the mayo.
It's not hard to change to Lite or Less Fat or Reduced Fat products, once you get used to them you actually enjoy them. Adding a probiotic like yogurt is really good too, but watch out for the sugars in those wonderfully flavored varieties. I was looking at the sugars in the yogurt aisle and the similar size yogurt packs went from 6gm of SUGAR per serving to 30++ THATS SHOCKING. When a diabetic is only to have like 35gm of sugar ALL DAY. One little yogurt pak could destroy me.
Also, it's about metabolism. eating something small, often, is the key to keeping your body burning fats all day liong. I have a problem with eating in the evening. I would rather have coffee all morning and not eat and that's not good planning.
~Connie
-
I don't use mayo!!!!!
Also, you have to watch - some "lite" products are higher in carbs!!!
-
I am the same way Connie, I love coffee, I prefer it to anything else but I can't make it worth a darn. My husband is the official coffee maker in our house. He uses an old fashioned blue speckled enamel perculator and it always taste delicious. But today he left early and didn't make any so I made myself a single cup of hot chocolate. It's cold in here anyway. LOL But I have since already walked for 30 minutes on the treadmill and will do it again later.
I am a stress eater too pejkug# oh hell who am I kidding.............. I eat for any reason.
