Morning Kadeeb,
Thanks for the explanation. I don't want to be his brother or his sister. I read his entire comments on another source than the one I posted yesterday. I knew what he meant .. but it still chafed my chaps.

Morning Bren,
I know what you mean. There are a lot of people in Alabama who feel the same way. At the worst, his statements were dumb, senseless, rude and a multitude of other things. At best just plain ignorant.
-
It's one thing to hear it in the pulpit, from family or friends but quite another to hear it from a politician while he was giving his inaugural speech, albeit in a Baptist church. He said he regrets it and he probably does but only in the political repercussion sense. I am not losing any sleep over it either...just enjoying a good discussion.
Cheers
Beth -
Kadeeb,
I think you're right ... at best they were 'just plain ignorant.'
Morning Beth!

Madalyn,
Soooooo true! As for the weenie apology, there wasn't any apology that would have worked. The statement was inexcusable, not to mention just plain ignorant. He's just lucky he was able to put a sock in his mouth until after the election. I think they would have eaten him for lunch if it hadn't been too late to keep him out of office.
I believe the man to be true to his faith and he believes what he says but the governor's office is not a pulpit. He can believe anything he wants, but when he stands as a governor he needs to put aside personal beliefs and get on with the business of government. If I want a sermon, I'll go to church.
-
I read that he actually said this after the inauguration when he attend a MLK event. Same day. Doesn't excuse him - he is still the Governor and should have known it was subject to many interpretations.
-
Kadeeb ... A rousing Amen to your post! I completely agree with the para you wrote below!

Was just reading the new issue of Vanity Fair and read the following article. The author is a bit over the top (a couple things made me cringe and I wish he wouldn't have mentioned Willow Palin at the end), but if you consider yourself a "liberal wacko" (that's how he describes himself), you'll get a kick out of the article. If you lean the other way, you probably won't want to click on the link.
Enjoy

Don't consider myself a wacko liberal but the guy can use the english language. It was a good article and you're right, very entertaining (he probably wouldn't appreciate me saying that). Willow should have been left out but he actually said what many others may be thinking.

Sadly.

The days of professional journalism are still alive and reporting on the News Hour (PBS). Watch the News Hour for a week and then switch to what you were watching before. You will definitely appreciate the calm and in depth analysis of the issues on News Hour.
I especially like the commentary of Mark Shields, liberal and David Brooks, conservative. Here is a link with a video of their conversation about Business, China and Health Care. It runs a little over 5 minutes.

Notself--good point. I listen to NPR and should watch PBS news more....
-
we have our Public Broadcaster the Australian Broadcasting Commision (abc.net.au), 4 TV channels(including childrens' broadcasting), 50 radiostations, which has a charter from Parliament, and gets pulled up in senate commitees for any perceived bias. Rupert Murdoch hates it. He calls it "unfair competition" ha. It's a fabulous news source compared with commercial news. We also have a multicultural channel (SBS) which has as one of its multicultural news sources, The Newshour with Jim Lehrer.
I say, read widely and make up your own mind. We have to fight back the "forces of darkness" every few years who want to cut back Federal funding for the ABC, it is well loved by the population, and provides emergency broadcasting in times of natural disaster, fires, floods, cyclones etc.
-
I'm with you re: NPR, and especially the Fridays with David and what's his name--very interesting takes on the weeks events, imo. I do internet. BBC as well, at least a different take on what we see everywhere here.
Old Rupert won't be happy till he takes over all news sources and puts his slant on them. All it takes is money, folks.

Comcast takes over NBC network. Comcast is already making changes by getting rid of Keith Olbermann.
-
Are these our republican candidates for 2012? Pretty sure Bachman and Palin don't stand a chance.
Pawlenty and Romney .. maybe.
-
Bachman will give the boys a run. She's got the money and the rhetoric. Pawlenty and Bachman are from the same state. What's a poor Minnesotan to do?
-
Time to hightail it out of Minnesota!
-
Ahh geez Madalyn .. I wish you would change your mind, but I do understand. I'm going to miss you.
love,
Bren
-
Hugs to you! You will be missed!
-
At the risk of being told to pick up my toys and leave - It's noon ET and no one from BCO has acknowledged, explained, rationalized or denied that many many posters were unable to get on this site over the weekend - and, in fact, may still be unable to access the site. Talk about DeNIle! Edited to add that it just occurred to me that maybe they're in the endless loop!
-
Aw, Madalyn, you will be missed. I understand, though. I think it's a shame that good people choose to leave this site but I know everyone who has publicly left lately has had a good reason. This site is diminished by the loss of the sharing of their experiences. I just wonder how many of us will just choose to desert the site silently.
-
Aw, Madalyn, ... dang it. Just when I was going to tell you how strongly I agreed with you (Re: "I miss the days when the news was news instead of gossip. And newcasters were professional journalists instead of entertainers or talking heads. ..."), you're gonna go and leave us.

<sigh> There is life on the outside, after all.

Otter .. true .. there is life on the outside.
But it's difficult for me personally, as I work from home and I'm very isolated. So many of my closest friends are on this site. I've met about 15 members from this site and we became friends for life. We visit each other as often as we can. So when two of my friends decide to leave in less than a week, I think it's sad. One of the gals that just left, I met a couple of years ago. She's a beautiful, kind, smart and loving woman .. and I was so sad to see her targeted on this site.
And .. Otter .. I think you rock. I'm shocked and surprised to hear you got some ugly PM's. That makes no sense whatsoever. You're a keeper in my book!
hugs,
Bren
-
Don't you just love those PM's that make you feel so warm, fuzzy and welcomed! I've been on the receiving end myself. However, I just put "She Who Shall Not Be Named" and company on "ignore" and life has been so much more pleasant. I am just sorry that any cancer survivor feels comfortable abusing other cancer survivors in a place people come for empathy and compassion.
I am also sorry to see people leave because they feel unsafe or unwanted.
-
I read Madalyn's recent comments in one of the other threads, and now I understand.

Yes Otter, in a community this large there are bound to be some people with personality disorders.
Breast cancer has never been known to cure mental illness, nor has mental illness been shown to prevent breast cancer.
-
Otter -- I am so very sad that you've been the recipient of ugly pm's. You are such a valuable resource to us all with your research background and your ability to cut through the crap to find out what is worth knowing/remembering and what isn't! Like you, I'm not a joiner, and that's why I truly treasure the friends I've made that I've met here.
I'm glad that my friends and I have other ways of keeping in touch too.
Sending you multi-hugs and a huge thank you for being you!

http://money.cnn.com/2011/01/24/news/economy/health_care_fraud/index.htm?hpt=T2
Health care fraud crackdown nets $4 billion.
I thought this was interesting as majority of the money collected was from large drugmakers, not individual fraudulent activity.
"But the biggest chunk of money collected came not from individual fraudsters but from large drugmakers -- accounting for half of the $4 billion recovered.
Botox-maker Allergan (AGN, Fortune 500), Inc. agreed to pay the government $600 million last year to resolve criminal and civil liability arising from its marketing of Botox for treatment of headaches and other issues that were not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
Novartis (NVS) agreed to pay $422.5 million to resolve criminal and civil liability arising from the illegal marketing of certain pharmaceutical products.
In April 2010, AstraZeneca (AZN) paid $520 million to resolve allegations that the company marketed the anti psychotic drug, Seroquel, for uses not approved by the FDA and paid kickbacks to doctors."

When I click on this thread from my faves topics, I get an error page that doesn't contain any posts, just that I'm on page 54 of 52 (have there been that many posts disappeared?) like this:
Page 54 of 52 (1,560 results)
If I click on the page number, everything's normal. Is anyone else seeing this? I've accessed this thread when there were deleted posts on a page before and it never did this...
