I've met many Canadians and Brits. None were wearing duct tape and seem quite capable of speaking their mind.

My cat has shown an interest in the brussel sprout soliloquy and is thinking of writing a ballad. Surprised But first, a nap.

Maya, can't wait to hear your cat's ballad. Tupleo, always love reading our Constitution. I have it on my iPhone and read it frequently

I'm just glad I don't have to let soldiers stay in my house overnight unless I want them there! (Amendment 3 for those pesky Canadians wearing duct tape and with only plastic forks for weapons. Don't you have soldiers in your houses too?  Wink)

I love the cat picture. My cat will be howling at me in an hour or so because she wants me to go to bed. She is a shelter kitty but has all of the characteristics of a Maine Coon. She is so funny. She bats her water dish around before she'll take a drink and she talks a lot. She is very loyal to me and not so friendly to others.

For those tiring of brussel sprouts at every meal, try this with cauliflower:

Cut up a bunch into florets. Add chopped garlic, chopped green olives, and a (rinsed and drained) can of chickpeas, a little salt and pepper and red pepper flakes if you're the spicy sort (and I do believe there are many gals here who like to heat things up, doncha know!) Spray all with olive oil and roast at 425 for about 20 minutes.

That'll cure your jonesing for brussel sprouts!!

OK I have to admit to a blonde moment (thank God it doesn't last too long at a time) I kept walking by the computer and refreshing my page to see what was being said. Did this several times and then noticed that there were 2 pages beyond the one I was refreshing. God help me!  If I did have any opinions on what was said after the cat pictures, I'm too embarased to tell anyone what they are.

BTW I don't have anyone on ignore but if others want to do it, it's fine with me. This thread is coming into my home and if I didn't like the company, I'd shut the door too.

I have never come across the idea that we did not have freedom of speech in Canada. I have even seen separatists burn the Canadian flag without repercussion. To me there is as much freedom of speech in Canada as there is in the U.S.

I wonder if there are laws forbidding the Ku Klux Klan from freedom of speech?

I did not know about Alberta's law, so it is obviously not everywhere.

The only thing I remember about Canadians and their free speech laws dealt with Ann Coulter.  It was planned that she would speak at some University when they cancelled, due to her content.  They reported that they did not have as "free" of speech that America had.  Anyone else remember this?  I will look it up.

Ok, I found it....Francois Houle warned Ann that Canada had laws against hate speech, and if she spoke, it may not only be dangerous for her but illegal.  It was at the University of Ottawa last March 2010.  So, she didn't speak because 2,000 protesters kept her from doing so.

Ann Coulter's speech was hate speech. Okay Canada has freedom of speech but is not tolerant of hate speech. I wonder how tolerant the U.S. would be if someone's speech targeted their hatred towards African Americans or Hispanics?

kellyj -- Briefly, Freedom of Speech, Assembly, Religon etc. are all articles within Canada's Constitution, but the Criminal Code of Canada includes hate speech (public, written, internet) against any individual or group of individuals as a criminal offence.

Canada is a nation of immigrants (accepting up to 250,000 each year).  Perhaps it helps to understand this:  laws against hate speech help prevent one cultural/religious/nationalistic group from badmouthing (to use a polite word) or terrorizing through threats, another cultural/religious/nationalistic group within Canada's mosaic.

    2tzus

Thanks for telling me about the KKK.I am absolutely shocked.

I now stand corrected. Canada does not tolerate such behaviour and yes I will now say the U.S. has more freedom of speech.

I don't think that kind of "freedom" is necessary and perpetuates the hate.  It is illogical and kind of ignorant and disrespectful.  JMO!

If a religion is preaching hate, then maybe it isn't really a religion. Except for rules against hate speech, we have free speech.

That makes sense, Lindasa, but like 2tzus said, who gets to decide what is hate speech and what is not.  The students just did not agree with Ann's views.  Isn't the fact that they didn't want her there and kept her from speaking.......exactly the type of intolerance and hate that they are trying to avoid in the first place?

Ann didn't come because the Canadian public had the freedom of speech to tell her they were not interested in what she had to say.

"Obviously Canada has some problems with religious preaching the tenets of their faith."

This coming from a country that is trying to shut down Muslims?

You know, eventually, things need to be amended.  The WWW has no boundaries.  It will afford us all the opportunity to learn from each other.  Instead of learning things third hand through news media, and organizations with self interest in mind, we might realize that we, the people, have a lot more in common than we have differences, just by interacting on forums such as this.  It's fun to spar, but much more productive to not be afraid and actually try and see with both eyes.  That's why we have two of them.
