Oh Barbara, I know what the story is. The story is that we live in a violent culture (nice list of Canadian crimes, Otter, but they pale in comparison with what happens in the US on a daily basis). And that culture is nurtured by words and watered by access to firearms that have no purpose other than the killing of humans, and shaped by the demonization of "the other" ie, people who are not like us.

It seems that linking to NY Times columnists is the order of the day. I personally find David Brooks hard to stomach. His words may not incite, but they often make my skin crawl. OTOH, Bob Herbert continually speaks truth to the powers that be in our country (and takes a lot of heat for it.) In today's column he notes that over 150000 Americans have been murdered in the past 11 years, he goes on to say:

"If we were serious, if we really wanted to cut down on the killings, we'd have to do two things. We'd have to radically restrict the availability of guns while at the same time beginning the very hard work of trying to change a culture that glorifies and embraces violence as entertainment, and views violence as an appropriate and effective response to the things that bother us.

Ordinary citizens interested in a more sane and civilized society would have to insist that their elected representatives take meaningful steps to stem the violence. And they would have to demand, as well, that the government bring an end to the wars overseas, with their terrible human toll, because the wars are part of the same crippling pathology."

It is time to stop the brussel sprout abuse! Calling them out as icky or smelly,while others smash, boil or toss them in microwave! What's next? Broccoli? Off with their heads? Or gobbling down the little broccolinis? Where is the compassion? This is a sad day on BCO.... sigh

That is so true Blue! I remember reading how Adams was looking forward to his grandchildren getting to use jet paks some day to get around. Or was that Franklin? Hmm, or maybe I'm mixed up and it was DaVinci.

Just because you have a right, doesn't mean you need to abuse it. With rights come responsibilities. Or at least that's what they used to teach in civics classes.

Meant to add: did the Founding Fathers know exactly what they were doing when they enshrined slavery in the Constitution? 

I believe you are the one trying to have it both ways 2tzus. If no one responds it could be because they have you on ignore. It's a wonderful setting.

worldwatcher:  Your cat photo finally came up and I just want you to  know that "no cats were harmed in the cooking of my brussels sprouts".  In fact, the only cat in the family was safe in her own apartment away from any flying sprouts!  Now when it came to DP, he had to face the horrors with me but "I" got the penalty and had to clean out the microwave on my own.  Frankly, I haven't eaten any more sprouts since the "bombing".  I never had these problems with my pickled pigs feet!

I will have to work my way back to getting the "courage" to put those sprouts in my body.  Even GasX had no power against these angry babies!

Well, 2ztus (did I spell that right), I enjoy reading others opinions. I may seriously disagree with them and if it is a big enough issue, I will stand my ground and post. I have my opinion on abortion but that is NOT what this thread is about. We started out as health care and wandered off into brussel sprouts. Abortion is an incendiary topic and I think (JMHO) that this forum does not need any discussion about it.

If you want to live somewhere where there is not freedom of speech, try Britain or Canada.

Love this thread. Could you give me an example of the above, I would like to know if I have duck tape on my mouth or not and why. I think it was 2ztus who said it.

Of course sometimes people don't respond because they are off cooking brussels sprouts, which is where I'm going. . .

PS. No one suggested abridging free speech or the right to bear arms as part of a well-ordered militia, only exercising maturity and responsibility in the use of same. I'm not sure why mature adults find the need to knee jerk leap to unrelated extremes when confronted with any criticism of their culture. It's strange.

(But then, people are.)
