Authorities executed a search warrant at Loughner's home and found a letter inside a safe that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords wrote to Loughner on Aug 30, 2007, thanking him for attending a "Congress on Your Corner" event, according to an FBI agent affidavit filed with a five-count criminal complaint.

"Also recovered in the safe was an envelope with handwriting on the envelope stating "I planned ahead" and "My assassination" and the name "Giffords," along with what appears to be LOUGHNER's signature," the criminal complaint reads.

Jared Loughner unable to enlist in Army because of drug use

Jared Lee Loughner, the suspect in Saturday's mass shooting in Tucson, was rejected from enlistment in the U.S. Army because of issues related to his history of drug use, military officials said Sunday.

In writings on the Internet attributed to Loughner, the suspect wrote that he had at one point been trying to join the Army through the Military Entrance Processing Command in Phoenix. Army officials confirmed Saturday that Loughner was not accepted and was never in the Army, but did not disclose the reason or reasons for his rejection.

Typically, applicants for military service must pass a barrage of exams, including a standard aptitude test, a urinalysis drug screening, a background check for felonies and misdemeanors, and a series of medical tests that can include psychological evaluations. Military officials said failing the drug tests or lying about prior drug use or convictions are among the most common disqualifiers for service.

In Loughner's case, it appears that his drug use was the problem, and he has a prior drug-related conviction. A military official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information said Loughner failed an aspect of the drug inquiry, though it was unclear if it was the urinalysis or other questioning that blocked his entrance. It is unlikely that someone who failed the drug portion of the examinations would have gone on to have more extensive testing, such as a psychological evaluation.

Gabbie Giffords is an amazing woman. Even though she runs on the Dem ticket, she practices common sense intelligence. It's so scary how one person with mental problems can cause so much sadness and horror. I hope she pulls through and continues to be a productive, hard working citizen. Not to mention of course, a wife, mother, etc. Fox showed photos of the 6 who died. So sad. And the little 9 year old Patriot...unbelievably heart wrenching.

The level of frustration among conservatism vs liberalism (and vice versa) hasn't happened overnight. And it's not going to go away overnight. People are sick and tired of the taxes, the waste, the abuse of entitlements. As long as this continues, things will not change. Hope is in the new Congress and 2012. What else do we have?

Fox interviewed one of his teachers from college - before he was kicked out. The teacher said he actually feared having his back to the chalk board when he was in his class. He said he feared being shot by him. What am I missing...why the hell DIDN'T the teacher do more than simply get him kicked out? Unless I'm missing something, this teacher seems negligent.

It seems that we can now answer the question of whether or not this was a random act. It was obviously directed at a political figure. That seems to coincide with eyewitness accounts.

Laura, in all honesty I don't believe that a perfect society (if one could actually exist ) would have stopped this man. For whatever reason he fabricated, he took the lives of not only his target but had disregard for the child and the elderly with which he had no issue. For all he knew, they could have been there on the opposition side. He wanted to kill. He did and I doubt even he could make us understand why. He was trying to reload. God forbid! I can only imagine the carnage if he had been successful.

Two thumbs up to Beesie's post a couple of pages back, to 208sandy and others who have urged us to reign in our speculation about the killer's motives and to focus on the real tragedy here. Six families were in all likelihood anticipating a nice weekend on Saturday morning, and by Sunday, these same families are planning funerals for their loved ones. Fourteen other families are dealing with injuries, and some are wondering if true recovery is possible.

And what are we and much of the rest of the country doing? Arguing. Who's fault is it? Who is mean, meaner, meanest? Let's just stop. I don't see what the inflammatory rhetoric accomplishes other than to - well, inflame. And that does not help the current situation, or help to resolve other problems that our country is facing now.

Thanks Sunny/Sandy .. I understand what you're saying.

I think in the wake of the tragedy of something so mind boggling as the attempted assassination of a political figure and innocent bystanders that it is normal to look for something to blame. It's a reaction formed from helplessness. Doesn't make it right or even logical, but I think it is normal.

Once the shock wears down and more facts are known, I believe the need to blame will lay solely on the man who killed and injured all those people.

kadeeb - I realize it's not a perfect society. But come on, if I thought someone was going to possibly shoot me in the back, I'd try to see that they got help. Not only for my safety, but for the safety of the other students and himself as well. I realize everyone doesn't react the same. But, I just wish that teacher would have been more diligent. He probably thought that by getting him kicked out, it would solve the problem. And I realize 20/20 hindsight is easy, but again, I can't help but think perhaps this could have been avoided. More will come out as times goes by.

Allison, I agree our politicans and everyone in general needs to be more civil. My mother would have made me sit in my room for hours doing something 1/100th as rude as the stuff I am seeing more and more every day. ). Maybe you would prefer we go back to my "pickled pigs feet" but I think the Pivens topic would be more preferable at this time. I have the info I wanted about her so I have no need to further the discussion about her but I am not ending it just because "you" want Melissa to "catch" us. That is NOT in keeping with the precepts of why "this" thread was started by Blue. BTW, if any one tries to delete us, I do hope Melissa will keep her word and let us know who they are. It is only fair to be able to face our accusers.

Hey, I know something that might cool off this thread for a minute or two. How about the fact that I am supposed to get 6-9 inches of snow tonight in north alabama. I only bring this up to say that work is off for tomorrow and with 9 inches of snow, no one is going anywhere around here for a day or two at the least and I will be able to read and post because I'll be home bound till who knows when. No one knows how to drive in this and there is no more milk, bread or eggs for 3 counties in either direction. Time to hunker down and enjoy the scenery.

The sheriff is still spewing his rhetoric. Now he's blaming Sharon Angle for something she said and, of course, Sarah Palin for her "cross hairs."

I'm signing off. I just want to add...I am truly saddened by the loss of lives (and that dear little girl) and the injuries suffered by innocent victims. My hope and prayer will be that Congresswoman Giffords recovers and that she will be able to go back to the job she so loved.

Unlike kadeeb, we're supposed to be getting sleet and freezing rain here tonight (instead of snow). Time to put another log on the fire, and snuggle under the blankets. We're planning to keep our TV system powered up, since there's a football game tomorrow that needs to be watched.

I am going to take exception with Shirley saying "the sheriff is spewing his rhetoric". This is a man who knows about ALL the threats that have been made against public officials in his area, because he has a responsibility to try to maintain order. He knows far more than any of us about the content of the 200 threats in one day that the federal judge who was killed received. He investigated the vandalism at Rep. Giffords office following the health care vote. He is not "spewing rhetoric", he is speaking out of his EXPERIENCE (yes, I am yelling), of what he has heard and seen. And he is grieving the loss of the 6 lives and injuries to others whom he has sworn to protect and defend.

It's easy to lob insults from behind a computer. The sheriff is out there everyday dealing with reality.

Wow. That is incredibly hateful and arrogant. You've really think you are qualified to judge the performance of the Sheriff of Pima County and how his department is carrying out an investigation? You really think that calling him names makes you somehow better than he is?

He knows the content of the many many threats that public officials in his county have received in the last two years. Perhaps his statements are made out of knowledge not ignorance. But they don't fit in your little box so you call him names. Wow.
