Gals - I thought it was not a good idea to weigh yourself every day as we have natural ups and downs. So I am only going to weigh in once a week on Monday mornings and that is the weight I will check in with. However, that being said, I haven't made much of an effort yet. Time to get serious. And I can't give up carbs - they are my favorite food group. I'll take carbs over protein any day :)

I also will only get my weight once a week. Mondays. I have been walking and eating less. I hope it works!

I was pretty good today...started with a blueberry smoothy again. My family loves pasta so I'm using the whole grain variety all the time now. Tonight I made stuffed shells but the filling was lower fat (sauteed onion, garlic, mushrooms and wilted baby spinach with modest amount of low fat ricotta and mozzerella). At my house, I have to balance vegetables and low fat with some cheese so my family doesn't realize what they are getting...lol  Just finished tonight's walk and my pedometer is 11,334.

Hi All - according to my home scale I am down another pound.  I will see the doc on Monday for chemo again and get my 'real' weight - I think they are more accurate than my home scale which seems to fluctuate alot...of course I'm going to wear really light clothes and take my shoes off before I get on the scale!

Had a good day today, but then got home and a neighbor had brought a plate of peppermint brownies with really thick frosting....I am definitely lacking willpower when it comes to chocolate, but I chose the smallest one on the plate so I guess that's something.  Not working tomorrow so am plannng to get out and get some exercise.

Is anyone else on here still going through chemo?  When I was planning to start DD AC/T they told me most people gain weight on that protocol.  That surprised me - did any of you guys have that experience?

dlcw:  Give yourself a break while on chemo!  It's good to eat healthy, but also to eat whatever appeals to you, and that includes chocolate and other comfort foods. I had cravings for McD's angus burgers while on chemo... thankfully I'm over that now.  I did (and do) exercise regularly though, and gained only a few pounds while on chemo which I lost soon after.  In fact, I'm now down to a 22-year low, pre-baby weight.  A bit of a silver lining to this awful diagnosis.

dlcw: On the DDAC didn't gaine a pound. I coudn't taste the food so didn't feel like eating that much. But now I'm doing the 12 weekly Taxol, can taste my food and gained about 10 pounds since. I have 2 Taxol to go. So I too am watching what I eat since monday and wishing to loose some weight, or at leat not gain anymore for the rest of the treatment!

Found you all!   I am afraid to weigh myself, but I promise by Monday I will work up the courage.  I am still trying to ween myself off of the holiday sugar train.  Prior to the holidays I had it all under control so I could just have fruit or a piece of chocolate and that would be it.  For those of you interested, I just received this in my email box today--It's the 2011 Fresh Start 28 day program to lose weight but not muscle tone.  I had heard we gain weight while undergoing chemo so I did this prior to chemo and lost 30 #:

heh... I gained during chemo.  ick.

But, I lost it all and then some with clean eating and exercise.  Currently, I am trying to get my BMI down to 19.  Not easy.

I got down to 124 for about a week during chem, then went back up to 130, where I held for awhile. Now I'm just trying to hold on to 134 while I eat my way through all the food I prepared for last night's Open House. So far, I am doing OK, but I'd really hoped to be down 2 pounds by now. That's hard when one of my best buds makes the best sugar cookies in the world. Luckily, I managed to finish them this morning, so *that* temptation is out of the way.Laughing

Question for all: do we want to set an end point for this weight loss challenge, and if so, when? A month, 3 months or by summer swimwear season. (I'd sure like to look better in those bikinis I bought when I got down to 122 a few years ago) Undecided

How are we all feeling at this point? Pleased? Disappointed? Determined? Hopeful?

I think I'm turning a bit more realistic, which means it may take me more than a month, as I initially thought. I'm not willing to give up all of my "treats" but I am quite good at not snacking between meals.  I'm more active when the weather is not so cold. Here in the mid-Atlantic region I find myself hunkering down more during the winter (though I love it when it snows). I think it's an age thing, but sometimes it discourages me. Getting older isn't for wimps; I'm 56 and "retired" in the sense that I don't take as many substitute teaching jobs as I use to. Wonder what the average age is here in this group.

HeidiToo:  I am 51 and feel as if I am 95 since chemo, lol.  I am not retired but I cannot imagine going back to the full speed ahead I was prior to BC.  There isn't any way I could operate like that nor do I want to.  Brain doesn't work, body doesn't work.  I think it's more realistic to give us at least a 3 month window.  For me it's not necessarily just about losing weight but getting healthier all around.  Excercise, supplements, eating better, making less stressful choices, learning to say no.  I feel like food is a good place to start since I have no will power if sweets are offered or put in front of me.  None, whatsoever. Zilch. Nadda.

I'm 46 and returned to work full time after taking off 9 months for treatment and recovery. I plan to take it off slowly...lol...and so far my plan is working as none as come off! I have an 11-year-old daughter and I want to set an example of healthy eating, portion control and exercise. So if it takes awhile, that's fine with me. I want it to be a lifestyle change.

    Amen to that Sugar!

I know lots of us are doing the diet thing but I do want to share an excerpt:

Intensive fruit-and-vegetable intervention didn't make a huge difference for reducing risk of recurrence in any type of breast cancer.[This result] may, on the surface, seem discouraging. But more research has been published since then. In 2007, a study was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology http://jco.ascopubs.org/cgi/content/abstract/2 5/17/2345] that was really encouraging for women with all types of breast cancer. While the very intensive fruit-and-vegetable intervention alone didn't seem to help, this [new] research showed that women who had a moderately high intake of fruits and vegetables - in other words, at least five servings a day of fruits and vegetables - coupledwith 30 to 40 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a day, six days a week, had about a 50 percent reduced risk of recurrence.

The exciting thing about this [finding] is that the reduced risk of recurrence held across all typesof weight categories. Obese women, or overweight women, [had a reduced risk of recurrence] if they ate the five servings of fruits and vegetables a day and got exercise, even if they didn't lose a pound. In a way this [finding] is encouraging, that you don't need to "go crazy," so to speak, and focus only on eating nothing but carrots and celery. It turns out that moderate diet changes along with moderate regular physical activity seemed to be verybeneficial for women with a history of breast cancer. The takeaway message is that we need to focus on a low-fat diet, we need to focus on getting in a lot of healthy foods, but we don't need to beat ourselves up and struggle to get in 15 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. We also need to get regular physical activity. This is probably really important for triple-negative breast cancer because,as Dr. Harris mentioned, we're now seeing research looking at insulin as a potential, important way in which we might be able to help treat and manage TN breast cancer.

gained a pound this week.  Soooooo frustrating.  I ate 1400-1500 cal a day (except yesterday where it was 1900). I know this is accurate because I weigh and measure all of my food... (I usually have a "cheat day" where I can go up to 2000 cal.)

I exercised everyday... walked at least 2 miles a day, sometimes more!  Yesterday I walked 2.5 miles AND took a step aerobics class. I lost my chemo weight before I had my oorph.  Now, I'm gaining no matter what I do.  I think this week I need to drop my cal down more and give up red wine. I really don't want to do that... :(

    thoughts?

Actually, that (muscle) could be true, as muscle weighs more than fat. I know when I first dieted a few years back, and was working out 3-4x per week, that happened to me.

So, don't get discouraged yet. Just stay the course and see what happens.

I know that we are all trying to lose a little  wieght, but it's encouraging to hear that cutting out the fat, adding vegis and excercise is the best thing we can do for us TN's and losing the weight is not the most important thing!  I'm gonna go with muscle weight :)

Just poking around the forum tonight and found this thread.  Read the first post and want to add something about hydroxycut (and other diet pills).  Since I haven't read the whole thread, if this is repetitive, I apologize.  I am lazy, undisciplined, and totally lack willpower.  I should have stock in all of the over the counter diet pills.  I'm willing to try just about anything as long as I don't have to follow a structured diet or deprive myself!  So appetite suppressants are my best friend, if they work.

Well I now find myself looking at every ingredient and googling it with "breast cancer" to see if there are any contraindications.  Because I am estrogen positive, anything with soy is automatically out.  There is an ingredient in hydroxycut that is contraindicated.  Can't remember what it is, though there is one.  Frown

My next venture will probably be into hypnosis CDs.  Not having will power really stinks!

Good luck to all of you.

Oh yeah.  I also refuse to weigh myself or to be weighed.  When a doctor insists on it, I get on the scale backwards and tell them not to tell me.  I know when I lose weight by the fit of my clothes.  I'm one of those perverse people who would be so totally bummed out by hearing the number that instead of being motivated to lose weight, I would go into some kind of depression and eat more!

I haven't walked as much as I wanted to this week, by the time I got home from work it was dark and raining almost every night.  I did however make arrangements with 2 of my coworkers that walk daily @ lunch to start walking with them starting next week.  I ate salads almost every day for lunch this week, and twice for a meal at dinner time. I've also discovered I love Greek yogurt!  I will admit that today wasn't the best, we cooked grilled chicken and deer sausage, both lean, but had comfort junk food homemade mac & cheese, garlic bread and deserts for the playoff game - that the Saints managed to lose...... I guess I'll have to root for Seattle next week - Go Seattle!

Sorry for the intrusion.  I picked up this thread from the active topics and didn't realize it was for triple negatives until I left the forum and played back the "TN".  As I am not triple negative, I am not really used to seeing the initials.  Why I always think of Tennessee is beyond me.  But I do.  Anyway sorry.

Jenn, don't feel bad, I wasn't much better today myself. Ar least you had your team playing so you have an excuse!

My pedometer today is only at 9311.  I did do a walk on the treadmill tonight but since it's Saturday, I slept in late and really didn't do much walking other than going to the bakery to buy kaisers for our dinner sandwiches. That in itself isn't too bad except I went to the bakery late in the day and they had all their pies and danishes half price.  Oh my...I can't pass up a sale. So, I bought cinnamon danishes that I needed like a hole in the head and an apple crumble pie for dessert tomorrow night. Thanks goodness my DD and DH (...with the help of my "dear doggie") managed to wolf down nearly all or the danishes and I only had half of one. I'm better at following a healthy routine on work days but I'm trying...

Jenn..sorry about the Nola lose today...I have to admit that I was a little surprised...I've always liked Seattle..but not thrilled with their new coach

I will weigh myself on Monday and report in

HeidiToo:  Oh to be able to have a fireplace that works!  I envy you yours especially since California has been unusually cold this year.  I know, the 50's isn't cold but it's so rare that we experience anything lower then the 60's, lol!

My DH and I are still catfching up with people we missed during the holidays.  We got taken out to dinner Fridary night and I had a healthy salad but I ordered a rib eye steak and it was full of fat that I couldn't see because of the preparation and it's not like you can just spit out food while eating out.  I was pretty good about not eating most of the french fries it came with though.,  Then I succumed to the chocolate lava cake with pecan ice cream and let's just say their wasn't anything low fat about our meal.  Last night we went for sushi which wasn't fat at all and we took the train which required a really long walk so I guess we made up for it.  No willpower whatsoever so it's great to have you all here for support.

I went to USC Hospital's guidelines for a low fat diet which is what us TN's are supposed to be on, and these are the guidelines for keeping our fat intake below 50 grams"
