I love to watch criminal minds and CSI. I try to catch them every Friday night, with my marathon TV watching. Don't have time during the week to see anything so I go onto the computer and watch anything I might have missed!

Does giving a MT count as exercise?

Pray/Trish - I worked an extra long day yesterday, so didn't get to post - this is from waaay back - about quickie breakfast foods: drs recommend some protein - try a boiled egg (boiled in advance for the week and even pre-peeled in a baggie); low-fat string cheese + a piece of fruit (banana is mine); small piece of jerky + fruit; or a nutrition bar or drink.  These are all fast and easy.  I have the same problem - I know I need to eat breakfast, but don't often have time to cook it.  I'm not a caffeine person, so I use spicy V-8, string cheese and/or protein bar and a piece of fruit - I eat it in the car on the way to work and I'm good.  Sometimes I have nut bars.  I also keep oatmeal packs in my drawer at work for those days I forget or run out of time.  And i keep a jar of peanut butter and some almonds there as well.  Of course, right now I have leftoever Christmas chocolate in my drawer.  I'm trying to slowly parcel it out, instead of eating it all in two days, like I would if it were at home.  I'm also more likely to give it away if it's at work!  Oh, yeah, thought of another - little laughing cow cheeses or a spreadable soft cheese in celery - celery can be cut up once a week and put in a container with some water, then just grab a couple of pieces and take them with you along with the cheese.  (I'm obviously not a traditionalist when it comes to breakfast)

I'm delighted to be a member of the Roadrunners!  I'm about to take the dogs for a long walk - does that count as exercise?  It's not a fast-paced walk, as my partner can't go too fast.  I didn't get a chance to weigh yesterday, so that will have to wait until next week.  I will hit the gym tomorrow.  This thread is going to be great for me!

BTW - books and art are two of my favorite things - I'm an artist and gallery manager, and not only a bookworm but also have an online bookstore - so that's why the name.

Good evening ladies - this really has become a very busy thread - It has taken me quite a while to catch up since last night.  Looks like every one is really getting into this with great enthusiasm.

I was relatively good today - water with breakfast, exercised for 1hr 6 mins, light lunch, housework, some shopping, cooked dinner for family - then I was a little bold.  I found an little single serving Christmas Pudding my DD had given me that I had popped into the cupboard and forgotten about and I decided to have it so I heated it up and had it with cream and I am not going to feel guilty about it - it was lovely and I really enjoyed it. And now it's gone!!  And I'm drinking very, very weak chamomile tea (would that be considered part of my water intake??).  I have a head cold and a cough that is really annoying me - so I'm cranky and my Mum was rattling around the house from 2am this morning so even if I could sleep with the cough I couldn't with her, but I'm not going to start about that!!!

    Hope everyone is doing great.

I love berries...whatever is affordable that week i buy them like blackberries with my oatmeal. Yummy.

Hi Ainm...I dont know how others feel about this but for me as long as its not a caffeine drink its water. I relate to you about your mother. And my father doesnt even live with me.

He is very stubborn and never listens when I talk.

So Im not suggesting anything just saying its fine whatever you decide.

OK, there have been several questions/not yet defined items in the past few pages, I thought a summary might be helpful:

Daily water intake-do we need a set amount of water, or set individually? I've seen several references to drinking eight 8 ounce glasses (total of 64 ounces, or 1920 mL or cc). My goal is 1000 mL per day per my PCP but many others aim for 64 ounces. I also propose that any liquid that does not have caffeine and is not alcoholic counts. In the medical world, no caffeine means no coffee, but does allow tea, not sure if we want to go that route or exclude tea as well, as some teas do have caffeine. Thoughts?

Friday check in-some of us have work/scheduling/life issues that limit the time we can get on the computer. I propose that Friday check in be anytime Friday from midnight to midnight, and we give Meece a couple of days to collate and post the points. No pressure to post first thing in the morning, and gives Meece some breathing room for the collating (BTW, Meece-great job with the all the organizing and collating so far!) Maybe we could aim for the Team Captains summarizing on Saturday?

What counts as exercise? Since one of our goals is to promote healthier choices and habits, I propose that anything that gets us moving counts as exercise. Walking, no matter how fast or slow. Housework. Taking stairs instead of the elevator. Parking at the far end of the parking lot and walking to the building. Yard work. Gardening. Yoga classes. Assigned physical/occupational therapy exercises. Translating some exercise into minutes could be a challenge. Perhaps we can adopt a "standard" of 3 miles per hour as the average walking speed (this is the average human walking pace), so those who measure miles rather than time could convert? 1 mile would equal 20 minutes, 1 ½ miles would equal 30 minutes, 2 miles equals 40 minutes, etc.

For handy reference, here is a summary of the points system:
Down from the prior week = 2 points
Maintaining from prior week = 1 point
Gaining from prior week for those who need to gain = 2 points
Exercising = 1 point for each 30 minutes of exercise (keep track ladies)
    Making the Friday Check-in = 1 point
Meeting daily water intake (yet to be determined) = 1 point per day (keep track)

"Extra Credit" points awarded for special things done to encourage a healthy lifestyle
I'm not even going to try to define this one! Points have been awarded so far for increasing fruit and veggy intake, throwing out junk food.

    hahahaha Native.....Wink

It was really painful emptying a 40 oz jar (less what i ate night before) of cashews in the garbage.

Water intake cant be exactly the same amount for everyone. What do you think?

    Im aiming at 64 oz.

I drink 1 coffee once a day which doesnot count. How about cranberry-pom 100% juice?

    TONIC. LOL.

When I was vacationing in PA I went to a small store and asked for tonic, they gave me hair tonic. LOL.

I am drinking White Grape Juice, then I will try some chicken broth then make Lemon Jell-o. Sugar Free.

Suggestion that you don't try and remember everything on Friday while you are posting.   I  put one of my calendars on a side counter in the kitchen; a place I see easily, and each day code what I did that day.  So for instance, today a 'G60' means I went to the gym and worked out for 60 mins.   W4 = 4 glasses of water.   It will be a good reminder to me at a glance to see how many days in the month I have worked out (or not!)

Thans NativeMainer for the summary.  And, thanks to all for participating and encouraging one another.

    Go Roadrunners!

Seriously, Deb, you certainly get an extra point for getting your colonoscopy accomplished. That is a healthy watch-guard and we'll remember that on Fri.

NativeMainer I concur completely with all of your summary.

Certainly anyone doing assigned PT/OT exercises gets to count those minutes, the same for walking the dog and other things that get you up & moving.

Meecie, in the future, all pruning of trees would certainly count toward your total. IMHO

Today I walked the treadmill for 60 minutes plus the 5 minute cool-down. The machine says that I burned 230 calories at my average-person pace of 3 MPH. I'm banking those two points till next Fri.

    Hum on hummingbirds!!

Off to Karaoke night in the Community house.

Sorry Samsue, I just had to leave without the update, but have taken care of it now.

    NM you have great points.

I agree check in anytime Friday.  After Midnight on Friday, it won't count as a Friday check in but we still need to know the data and the data will count.  Yes, please, Team captain could compile the data and submit on Saturday.  Ladies you still can post your check in and data here, your leader will just compile it for me.

I think water intake will be individual although there should be a minimum of say 32 oz per day.  If it isn't carbonated or full of sugar it can count.

I also like your exercise parameters.  I used to do a lot of vacuuming and used that as power exercising.  I also made an effort to push the vacuum with my left hand as well to work out both sides.

I think the point system should be posted in the header so it can be easily referenced.  I'd like to put the team tally up there as well.  I just don't want the header to get too long.

    Another point item:

When one of us does a Colonoscopy, Mammogram, or other screening we should get a point.  We are being proactive about our health and that COUNTS!

The idea of getting a point for getting a colonoscopy is ALMOST enough to make me give and do it!
