For Roxanne

I attended a wake today for my first BC "sista". After my first surgery, before I started my "agressive" course of chemo and after my horrible pathology report, she walked into my office closed the door and told me that whether I wanted her to talk or not, she was going to bend my ear. I had never spoken to her before in my life. She was a volunteer in my office but worked in the food pantry and I just never saw her. What could I do but numbly say "OK". Roxanne told me she was a 20 year, Stage IV breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with bone mets five years out, then it went to the lungs and then to the liver. She was doing chemo regularly and living her life to the fullest. She told me a lot of things that day, some of which I can't remember in detail, but I do remember her vibrancy and her deep desire to reach out and help me in a way that only she or someone like her could. In 6 months she stopped volunteering, telling me that we had hired someone and so didn't need her. She would text me, just to keep up and offer support, always concerned, always upbeat. Roxanne passed away on Monday. Don't know if she ever came here, but wanted to tell you all about her and honor her courage, tenacity, empathy and kindness. I'll miss you Roxanne. Thank you.
