Soulswithin and all the rest of your dear ladies: Thanks.  Like the rest of you, I'm fighting hard. It's especially difficult because I'm basically alone: grown daughter in CA, grown son in NYC.  Ex-husband hurts me deeply: not a card, not a flower, nada.  True the divorce. a very nasty one, took place almost 20 years ago, but if the situation were reversed I'd at the very least send an email.  Ironically, he and his wife live fairly close to me.  I know I must not think about him (them),  but these waves of tears and anger keep returning.  Hope everyone else is doing well.

Barbcard - My prayers are for you. I've been feeling ignored by my daughter this whole journey (she's in WA). I'm not asking for her to take care of me, but jeez...a phone call once in a while to ask how I'm doing would be nice!  Some days we just feel blaw.

Susantm - I had a full-blown panic attack a couple of weeks ago at work. Cubicle-mate was hacking and blowing and I asked if she was going home early.  Had to take a Xanax b/c I was soo fearful of getting sick!!  Its not my normal reaction but nothing's been normal since before BC!

Maggiesmom - so glad to hear the PET scan is all clear. What a relief after a nightmare scare.

I'm on my way for #16 after this post.  Can't wear a bra now -- too sensitive.  I've had to be a bit creative as I'm 5'2, 140 lbs & 34H!  Walk slowly and wear a really bulky scarf!  Thank the Lord I'm 1/2 way done.

    WE CAN DO THIS LADIES!

rednnrah - My simulation was quick too - the tattoos hurt too.  When do you start?

Ladies - Hope everyone is feeling better.  Take extra good care of your skin while going through rads and be kind to yourself - take that nap if you have to - you deserve it.

I think about each and everyone of you daily know we are fighters.  We will have our good days and bad - we are all here to support each other.

    Sending cyber hugs to everyone

Had number 13 today.  My rad tech thinks I am def allergic to the cream.  Guess I will see what the RO has to say tomorrow when I see him.  I hate to be allergic to the cream because I really like it and it is not greasy.

I guess I had a great tatoo artist.  She did not hurt at all.

Barbcard hate that you are feeling so alone.  And the ex-husband, oh well sometimes the ex's are just to self centered.  When our son died 15 years ago my husbands ex-wife has yet to this day acknowledge our loss.  She actually tried to keep my husbands 2 sons from coming to the funeral and grieving with the family for their little brother.  When her mother, father and husband died we have always sent cards with personal notes.  The way I look at it they are the ones missing out on what life is really all about.

As far as the grown children.  Mine all live far away as well.  I think they have a really hard time contecting with what is going on  because they are not here with us.  I have to say one of my D-I-L that lives in WA is the best at sending me notes and checking on me.  I don't think it really hit my oldest son until this weekend when he came to visit.

I have decided my fatigue was not really been all that bad, I was just trying to get so much done to have Christmas.  I have felt really good today.  Yawning more than usual but not ready to take a nap. Hope everyone has a relaxing evening.

rednnrah - My tattoos hurt also and I was told it would be a quick pinch. Not true for me.

grannydukes - funny to me that your zap room is cold, that is what I would expect but mine is hot.

maggiesmom - I am thinking of you.  You have had a tough year.  My kids are grown so I can't even imagine how hard it is for all you girls with young children.

barbcard - Thinking of you too.  This has been the hardest thing for me having breast cancer. Thank goodness for this site, it has been so supportive.  So sorry you are dealing with this alone.

marriedblis -  I havent been able to wear a bra for weeks.  It is a challenge to look normal in clothes

I am starting to believe I will get though rads.  Only 9 to go!

Sherryc: Thanks for the support.  I finally set up an appointment with the social worker connected to my rad center.  She said on the phone  that the depression and crying jags were most likely to set in after the first couple of weeks, when the initial shock is over and the  logistics have been worked out.  Hope she's right. #9 tomorrow...Take care everyone!

What is the first thing to do after the first RADS?  Apply cream?  What cream?  Apply cream even if you don't have raw skin immediately?  First RADS tomorow!!!

    Hi Ladies:

barbcard- Your husband is a creep. Glad you are gettng help from the social worker.  I needed to see a therapist after chemo - I thought I would feel better after chemo but I was in a  funk. It helped.

cmf - After rads, I put a cool compress (but not ice) on the breast for maybe 10 minutes.  Then I put on aloe vera.  Then a few times that day, I put on Aquaphor or Udderly Smooth cream. So far, so good.

Soulswithin - My lumpectomy was near my nipple and I have been sensitive since then (early November).  One thing that helped - I cut a piece of soft fleece from an old robe and put it under my bra.  The nipple doesn't rub nearly as much.

    Hugs to everyone!!!!!!!!!

cmf-the CT stimulation is where you go and they position you on the table and take measurements for your field of radiation and you get your tattoos.  Then they take CT scans that they use to make your plan for your radiation treatment.  The plan takes anywhere from 1 1/2 to 3 weeks for the RO to finalize then you start rads.  My RO had me start using cream the first day of treatment.  Good Luck tomorrow.

cmf - Sherryc is right.  Start using creams from the first day.  Just don't use any at least 2 hours before being zapped.  You may want to check with your RO as each facility is different on the time before treatment.  Use your cream 3 times a day, unscented soap, no deodorant with aluminum and don't scrub the treatment area.  Your rad tech and/or RO should go over all  this with you if they haven't already.  Lot of rules but you will need to take extra good care of your skin.  The effects are cumulative and you may not see anything for a couple of weeks.  Some have skin reactions sooner that others.  Let your team know if you are having any skin problems.

Let us know how it goes tomorrow.

Take Care Everyone and Have a Great Day Tomorrow

bher - Yea! Nine more to go - the end is in sight.

    Hi everyone,

Technically I'm a Jan 2011 radiation gal, but I am having my simulation today.  I've followed this board and you all have been a great source of information and strength.

Just want to say hi and thanks and continue being the strong women that you are!!

    Smile

singleton@80: Congrats on starting the countdown.  It's starting to become a habit with me.  Whether a good or bad habit, though, I cannot say.

My latest metaphor for this rad business is that I'm the knocked-down Statue of Liberty  lying on her back on a cold metal plank, her right hand clenched in a steel handle.  No torch.  Maybe I'll send the whole poem when it's finished.

    Love and luck to all.

Toni 30: To say my ex is a creep is putting it mildly.  But I get a sense that this Board demands polite language.  OK, I'll just call him  a  son of a b****   Social worker says this BC thing often kicks off old hurts,  I doubt, though, that at my age they're hormonally triggered.  Cheers.

    hi all,

i had 3 tattoos - the first two i didn't even feel, but the third one was so painful it made up for the other two :-)

my incision isn't healing (I'm 7 weeks after surgery, and still have a hole in the middle of the incision scar. so i won't be starting rads next week as planned - don't know how long i'll be postponed for, but i think i'll stay on this list instead of moving to the Jan list if that's OK.

Does anyone know if the radiation we get is dangerous for small children? I have a 2 year old, and after I had my PET/CT scan, I wasn't allowed to go near my daughter for 36 hours becuase of the radiation agent they injected into me. Does anyone know if there are any similar restrictions with these rads? (I hope not - i'm a single mother and don't know how i'll manage my 2 yr old if i can't touch her for 6.5 weeks)

Latte - If you incision is not healed yet, will you even be able to start rads?  I had a wound from the Mammosite and a blood blister that I had to wait 3 weeks before starting.  My rad onc told me it would not head properly otherwise.

The daily zaps you will be getting will not be a problem around your children.  I did my treatments and went back to work everyday.  The dye was probably a factor but otherwise no worries.  Life will go on.  You will notice some fatigue later in treatments, so get it early some later.  Being a single parent, you will have to make some adjustments, so be prepared.

Ask lots of questions and you will get lots of support here.

     Happy Holidays to You

Singleton congrats on starting now you can see an end.

Latte-I would ask the RO but I don't that it is a problem.  When I had my Pet scan they were very clear with me about not being around pregnanat women or babies.  At rads they have never said anything about that and there are no radioactive signs around like there are at the PET scan place. I can't imagine going through this being single and having a 2 year old.  (((Cyber HUGS)))

mish1015-Welcome, but sorry you have to be here with us.  This is a great group of ladies that you will find lots of support with.

Answer to your question: you first go for the CT stimulation this is where they position you on the table and take measurements for your field of radiation and you get your tattoos (some say thetatoos hurt, mine did not).  Then they take CT scans that they use to make your plan for your radiation treatment.  The simulation takes about an hour to do. The plan takes anywhere from 1 1/2 to 3 weeks for the RO to finalize then you start rads. The day before you start rads you do what they call a dry run.  This is where they take x-rays of your positions etc., then the following day you actually start.  The actual rads tx only takes about 15 minutes.  My RO had me start using cream the first day of treatment. You will have to ask your RO about creams that he will want you to use.  Every doc is a little different. Good Luck with your planning session.

mish - the planning is really very simple and fairly quick.  You will lie on a table with your arms up above your head in arm rests of sorts.  The RO will come in with a marker and then they taped metal (maybe a chain, I didn't look).  I then was rolled in to my quick and painless CT scan.  And then I got 3 little tattoos.  I may have this order wrong but the important thing was that it was very mellow and easy.  I have my first rad today.....

I am going in for #14 today.  I will have 20 more to go.  My skin has held up pretty well, but the itching is increasing and last night I noticed a slight rash.  I know this is not good but I see my RO today so he will take a look at it. I am using my xlcair cream 3 x a day and aloe vera right after tx.  I am also using hydrocortisone cream several times a day. At least this week my clinic is closed Thursday and Friday so I will have a 4 day weekend to give my skin a break and next week is a 4 day week so I will have a 3 day weekend. Hoping these breaks will be good for my skin. I am really hoping to not break down in blisters.  Jo had such a hard time with that.

mish1015 - Tomorrow will be your simulation.  That is when they do the CT scan and your tattoos.  They use this information to decide where exactly you will be radiated.  The whole process usually takes about an hour.  There will be lots of people doing a lot of different things.  It will seem hectic but just try and relax.  Ask lots of questions if you are not sure what is doing on.  Once the simulation is over, you will be told when you will actually start - it could be days or several weeks.  Be sure to ask your rad onc about using creams for the skin.  I used Aquaphor and had good luck with it.

    Hope this helps.

Hi everyone!  Wow I couldn't post this weekend and I've missed 2 pages already - yikes!

I had TX#1 today!  I may be totally crazy but I feel twinges and 'activity' (really not sure how to describe the sensations) in my radiated breast already.  Is that possible?  Doctors all met yesterday to decide on my plan and apparently I'm their easiest patient right now since I just have one pose and 2 beam positions, so he said normally I'll be on the table about 7 min! Guess you have to feel grateful about that.

The 2 technicians (1 M, 1F) are really nice and the room has pretty pictures, christmas music, dim lighting and wasn't actually too freezing (probably my adrenaline keeping me warm).  Was hard not to be a bit nervous about what was actually happening, but other than any mental musings, totally doable.

2x a week after treatment I'm going to get acupuncture.  Has anyone here had any experience with it?  Had my first one yesterday with a TCM doctor.  He said no herbs or any vitamins and such until after all the radiation is done, then we'll boost with some healing herbs.  Should be interesting...hey, I'm game!

mish1015 - not sure what your doctors do, but mine doesn't do tattoos, they just use markers to draw LOTS of lines and then put tape over the critical ones they did during the simulation so they don't wear off.  They have asked me not to use any creams until I need them since they can get under the tape and wear down the marks and then I would have to do the simulation over again.

Hope everyone had a really lovely weekend.  So grateful you are all here for support.

localgirl-not heard of accupunture during rads.  Is that something your RO suggested or something you did on your own.  What is it suppose to do for you during rads?  Would love to hear more about it.
