edited June 2014 in Stage I Breast Cancer

I am writing to say hello to everyone, and to thank all of you.

I've been reading your posts for weeks now, while waiting for the biopsy results, the 2nd biopsy results, and the path from the surgery.  Had mastectomy of my left breast 2 1/2 weeks ago with reconstruction.  I did not get a copy of my pathology report, but I did so much research before I got the results from my BS, and took notes, so here is what I know.  My primary tumor was IDC 2.5cm, Grade 3, ER+/PR+ HER2/neu negative.  There was a second tumor found during a presurgical MRI, which was biopsied and positive as well.  Due to the amount of breast tissue that would need to come out for both tumors (and DCIS), we decided that mastectomy was the best (only) option.  The surgery path showed the second tumor to be ILC and not IDC as originally thought, so I actually had two different types of breast cancer in the one breast.  Path also showed Isolated Tumor Cells (ITC's) in the nodes, but there seems to be different opinions on whether this is signifigant or not.  MRI showed the other breast clean.  ILC has a tendency to be bilateral and harder to detect on diagnostic tests, so had I know this before surgery, I may have opted for a bilateral mastectomy, but hindsight is 20/20, right?  Right now I'm just trying to fully recover from the first surgery, not thinking about another one.  I'm VERY swollen still, my drain clogged and needed to come out a bit early, so I'm collecting alot of fluid still.

I have a consult with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center on Monday.  I'm a little nervous, but I'm bringing my brother with me for support.  My BS said based on the pathology report, she thinks they'll recommend chemo, but I will wait to see what my oncologist at MSK thinks.  They've got all the path slides and pre and post sugery reports already, in prep for my appointment.  Plus, we did the Oncotype DX test, still waiting on those results.

I have researched this disease extensively since my diagnosis, and I want to thank every single person on this site for being so informed and so supportive in just about every post that I've read.  I think it's amazing to have this type of support available to me as I recover from surgery and go through whatever the next steps will be in my treatment.  I was scared to death from the second I got the phone call about the 'highly suspicious abnormality' after my mammo, and as the days go on and I learn more and more - I am so much calmer.  The waiting is the hardest.  I use that expression that you need to know your enemy in order to put up a good fight, and waiting for the pathology post sugery was truly the hardest part.  I felt that once I knew what I was dealing with, I would know how to fight it.  I'm ready to fight it now, because honestly it's pissing me off that I'm still pretty tired and weak from the surgery.  I didn't expect to feel this way, I just thought I'd be down for a week and back in spin class before Christmas...haha, that's probably not going to happen.  I can't even go grocery shopping without feeling like I need a nap when I get home.  Very frustrating, but it is what it is and I'm trying to give my body the rest it needs to fully recover.

So anyway, sorry to ramble on.  Again, many thanks to all of you.  You will never realize how much reading all of your comments helped me get through the last few weeks.

Hugs to all...

(((HUGS))) back at you scout. It is very frightening to wait, wait, wait. Once you have your treatment plan in place, the relief you will feel will be unbelievable. I hope you continue to come here for support as we are open 24/7.

Sending all my positive thoughts your way Scout!  Glad you found this forum, it is truly a life saver.  There is someone here to support you, talk to you, commiserate with you, or just to listen 24/7!  I agree with Barbara, once you have a treatment plan you will feel much better.  You are ready to fight and once you have the battle plan, that spirit will carry you through.

Scout - you've been very brave and also very smart to do your homework.  I love the "know thy enemy" -- so true!!!  You will be surprised how much progress you'll make each week getting over surgery.  So many people have said healing only happens when you sleep - so catch up on all those Zs and pamper yourself!!  Plenty of fluids also helps to flush out any lingering anesthesia hanging around your tissues.  You're in great hands at MSK.  They will likely order copies of your path slides to review them -  it's always good to have 2nd opinions.  Take good care!

Not that I'm a doc but based on your tumor size and the fact that it was invasive, you probably will be recommended for chemo. So sorry that you have to go through this, no one should! You are in good hands at MSK, like JanetinVirginia said they will reread your slides.
