hey everyone:

In March I will be 6 years out from my bc nightmare beginning!

Today, I had my last physical with my oncologist. I stop taking Aromasin now. I am cut loose. From the oncologist, from any treatment, from the cancer center.

If I have any problems down the road, I will have to be referred back to the cancer centre thru my family doctor.

I must say I have come a long way. A long way!

Am I elated? Am I celebrating? No. I feel unreal, like I can' t believe I went thru all that and am still standing.

Today really is the first day of the rest of my life.

I wanted to share with my breast cancer sisters, because absolutely no-one understands like you all.

Wendy

Congratulations Wendy! I hope to reach that point. I think I will feel a great release of tension. I am a retired teacher and now work sometimes as a substitute teacher in a small school district. Most of the students (high school) heard about my cancer. Some asked questions. One boy talked with me several times about his grandmother who had bc. He was so happy when he came to me after class one day and told me the doctor had told his granny she no longer had cancer. She was 5 years out. A girl heard us talking and said "What? I though if you got cancer, you died." He proudly told her "No, you don't need to now."

Yes, Wendy, you are still standing, going forward without having the leash to that treatment center. 6 years is huge; I'm glad you are feeling so good.  We are all very happy for you!

Jacqueline...what does your screen name stand for?

Wendy...congrats!!!  i don't think my onc will ever cut me loose...like Jacqueline, he keeps me on a short lease....I'm still on 3 month check ups....after 4 years and 10 months since Dx!!!  When I see my onc again in Feb 2011, it will be 5 years since my 1st visit with him.  He is the only doc I still see...got tired of them all, so skipped my BS this past year and my PS...if onc is going to see me every 3 months don't need to see anyone else....part of me would love to get discharged from onc, but then again, I think I might miss it...in a weird sort of way, like after having a baby when you no longer see the ob/gyn after weekly visits!!!  Wishing you continued good health and dancing for years to come with NED....to your next stage in life!!!

    Major congrats Wendy!

Nothing like being let out of jail.  I think I felt that way with last radiation treatment.

I have 4 years and 4 months, but who's counting!!!  But I don't get free then as I will still have another nine years to go due to a study I am participating in.

Hope you have something wonderful planned! - Claire

Whoa!!  What's going on here??  How could you be released?  I thought this was a lifetime marriage with our Oncs.  I was diagnosed 8/2003 and have been taking Arimidex since 1/2004.  This August I would have been diagnosed with bc for 7 years and this January 2011 on Arimidex 7 years!  My Onc wants me to continue on the Arimidex so does that mean no divorce for me until who knows when?  I see my Onc two times a year and this May's appt. I think I am going to ask him how long this nightmare has to continue.  However, I don't believe that anyone is really a cancer survivor once it gets in their bodies.  But it does take years before a tumor can be felt or found on the mammo so why can't we be discharged and just do our mammos yearly??  Just wondering how this works for the majority of people who got bc.  Thanks.

Sherri:  It dawned on me that if I convinced my Onc to discharge me, I would have no one to check my breasts for possible lumps every 6 months.  I was told I don't need pap smears any longer since I had a partial hyster many years ago and the ovary that was left has shriveled up to a prune!  So I don't have any reason at this point to see a gyn regularly.  I don't trust checking myself so I guess it is better to keep going back regularly to him and he also sets up my annual mammos and bone density tests (for Arimidex SEs).   Sooooo I'll let him decide when it's time to divorce me.
