Grateful this Thanksgiving...

In past years when Thanksgiving has rolled around I feel I've only ever taken a cursory inventory of my life. This year I'm much more keenly aware of my blessings. I am grateful for the generosity of strangers that has rendered me both speechless and incapacitated with humility. I am grateful for knowledgeable doctors that have always treated me as Colleen and not breast cancer patient #226. I'm grateful for compassionate nurses who have cared for me with immeasurable tenderness and sincerity. I am grateful for the stoic strength of my family that has been a bulwark when I was in abject need of support. I am grateful for friends who answer phone call and texts in the middle of the night to offer comfort. I'm grateful for their unwavering optimism in the face of insurmountable fear and their boundless levity amidst tremendous sorrow. Most of all, I'm grateful for abundant hair, albeit a deliberately defiant and unruly curly mess.
