Parabens and Phthalates Free Products
Hello! So I just completed my 6th chemo, and start Tamoxifen in 2 weeks, and Dec 2, I go for my first radiation treatment. I've been reading Anti Cancer by David Servan-Schreiber, and am going to try to gradually change my everyday choices...so where do I find makeup that are parabens and phthalates free? Is it a specific line of makeup I can find here in Edmonton, Canada? Is it particular products? I love MAC...please tell me I can still buy and use MAC products! I heard some stuff from the Body Shop is parabens and phthalates free...I found deorderant there, that is aluminum free. This after, being told by an employee that one of their deorderants were aluminum free, and when I turn it around, under ingredients, it clearly states Aluminum was an ingredient. (You should have seen the look on her face when I pointed it out to her) Also.....skin care products that contain estrogens or placental by products???? WTF???? I think Dr. David Servan-Schreiber needed to be way more specific...I have breast cancer, and a 14 month old daughter, does Dr. David know how busy I am???? LOL Can anyone help?

Have you tried the organic section at the grocery stores? Our local Zehr's (AKA Loblaws) has a very large section that has everything from food, cleaning supplies, shampoos, soaps, body cream, lotions etc. I have yet to switch my makeup to Paraban free so I honestly haven't looked for that in the organic section.

I think our Whole Foods store has makeup that is paraban free, but I can't be positive. What about the Mineral make up lines? I still use the same make up, deodorant and other products that I used before.

Kellie ~ Are you familiar with this website? http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/
It gives the safety ratings for literally thousands of cosmetic items, and also lists the ingredients in each one. I've been surprised to find out that natural products I've purchased at Whole Foods, for example, have not been as pure or safe as I'd assumed. So now I usually check things out in that datebase before I buy them. Deanna

Kellie, hi there, I'm a fellow Canadian!
I read the labels on everything. I have found that companies are not consistent, some things do, some don't. I just find I need to check all the time. I also found my skin is a lot more sensitive now, so some things I have bought (costly!) turn out to be unusable. It has been a little frustrating!
Also beware of so called "Natural" or "Organic" lines - a lot of it still has parabens, etc. A lot of the Body Shop stuff has parabens, but they do have a new line that doesn't.

Burts Bees is one of the easiest to find anywhere. Look for all-natural and organic products in the grocery store and drug stores. At first, I went online and found lots of products but they were very pricey. Now I'm learning to just check out the natural products sections of all the stores and I'm pleasantly surprised to find so many moderately-priced items.
VitaCost.com has a nice selection of sunscreens, for example, that won't break the bank.

Thanks Everybody! There is just an overload of information...Do you know, I spend at least 75% of my day, thinking about cancer, reading whatever I can get my hands on...it is so overwhelming! I have good days (like today) when I don't feel overwhelmed, feel positive, feel I'll be around a long time, if I take better care of myself, in short, I feel great about everything. Then, I'll have days where all I can think of is death, how much longer will I be around, think "who cares what the ingredients are, or what I eat, I'm going to die anyway." and sit around and cry all day. NO ONE in my family or circle of friends can honestly relate with what I've gone through this year. None of them have cancer. Last night, was a bad night, and I talked to mom who told me I've completed chemo, I should be happy? Happy? Happy that I'm bald, and my eyelashes and eyebrows are gone? Happy that I have one breast and can't wear any of the sexy tops I used to love wearing to flaunt them? Happy that I had 14 lymphnodes removed and 5 of those were cancerous? Happy that as a result my arm feels weak and heavy and now I have to worry about lympdema? Happy that the chemo is shrinking whatever that is in my pelvis, but it's possible it's metasizes? Happy that I'll be medically followed for the rest of my life? ALL THAT SOUNDS AWESOME, I'M SO LUCKY AND HAPPY I'M DONE CHEMO. note the sarcasim...oh yes, what was this topic about again? Parabens and Phthalates....

Kellie, I know EXACTLY how you feel!! That's what's great about being here... we can all relate. I just recently decided that the stress of worrying about all this would probaby cause me more harm than the thing I was worrying about itself! So I pick and choose what works in my new lifestyle. There are many, many products I've given up and exchanged. But after trying every single deodorant I could get my hands on I found that I could not live feeling wet and clammy every day of my life- I was miserable. So back to my regular deodorant for me. I won't use lip balm that isn't 100% natural and organic but I won't give up my regular (mac!) eyeshadow. I figure a lot of lip balm gets into your mouth whereas the shadow just sits on top of your skin.
You really just have to make decisions for yourself and then be at peace. You can't stop living or worse, drive yourself mad with micro-managing!! Because you will go crazy (as you're noticing!!) Think about how many women are walking around on this planet smoking, loaded up with tons of makeup and hair products, without a care in the world... and they won't get breast cancer. There's a certain element of randomness and genetics that can't be denied. It's not our fault.
I hope you have lots more good days and you find many wonderful friends here at bco. Enjoy your little girl- what a blessing! (I'm on the ladies in their 30's board and quite a few wanted to have kids and didn't get a chance before the damn cancer interrupted their lives.)
((((Hugs)))) for you!!
