Contralateral Lump

I'm headed to my cancer center tomorrow to have a mammogram and consult re a new lump in my right breast (opposite the cancer).  I found it after noticing soreness under the nipple and under my arm.  The lump is hard and tiny...so small it is sometimes hard for me to find.  I'm wondering if anyone here has had an experience like this?

I have had a month to refocus away from health issues after finally having my appendix out late in August.  It has really felt good to regain stamina and have energy again.  I have laid a rock retaining wall and my DH and I redid our front entrance and laid a brick patio as well.  We held a huge anniversary party for my brother last weekend that was a blast. Life is looking up...now this.

Please send good energy my way tomorrow.  The caring support here always helps me.

Molly

Best of luck, and let us know how you go.

Good grief, this does not seem fair. I have been wondering about you, and glad to hear the appendix is no long with you. Well...at least you are not going to be fighting your way off the mountain tomorrow in an ice storm!

I've always heard that breast cancer usually does not hurt,(not in these BB-sized early stages, anyway.)

    Keep us posted.

Thanks to all of you for your support; I always carry the strength of this sisterhood into every dr. appt. and medical decision...and send positive energy back daily as I read the posts/updates.

I had a mammogram and  ultrasound. The mammogram showed nothing but the ultrasound shows a solid BB-sized lump among some cysts...I am really grateful the ultrasound was scheduled along with the mammo.  My breasts are really dense so the tests, as with this mammo, often don't show the whole/true picture. The lump could be a cyst with solid debris (calcification maybe) or cancer. My biggest concern is how very hard the lump is...not at all like the fibrocystic changes I experienced during periods. Either way, it is unusual as I am postmenopausal and on Femara. The radiologist was great; she scheduled a needle aspiration/biopsy on Wednesday...the day after my birthday.

I will keep you updated...I am within 6 mths of my 2-year mark and hoping this does not turn out to be a new primary cancer.  Getting to  2 yrs. post-surgery is an important benchmark for me...after diagnosis, we all mark time in some fashion, don't we?

Weesa...winter is not  far away and I think we should agree to only whisper the words "ice storm"...or better still use sign language...to avoid invoking the wrath of the ice gods this year. Last year, I definitely did SOMETHING wrong in that category :).  BTW, the radiologist also told me that soreness with a lump is often a good sign.

I'm hoping it is nothing too Molly. Oh, I can imagine how anxious you must be.

Glad they are moving fast on it for you. Try and relax this weekend, and know everyone is behind you.

molly, I hate scares like this! The waiting is so aggravating. I take comfort in the fact you always let us know as soon as you know.

Haven't the mountains this October been just incredible? The string of gorgeous days just seems to go on and on.It might be the weather spirits are trying to apologize for last winter.

Thanks for every comment...so much support and positive energy. It is amazing to be part of this stage 3 sisterhood especially since stage 3 majorly sucks.

I am visiting with my Mom (84) and sister in Charlotte until we head back to Duke Wed.  It will be the first b'day I've celebrated here in years.  It's quiet and peaceful here and has a way of bringing me back to my core.  I sleep in my childhood bedroom...can reminise about the cornstalk playhouses I used to build...the pecan orchard is LOADED with pecans and the pear tree is loaded with amazing heirloom pears. There is time to talk and read and remember. I am blessed to love home yet be able to go back home...to visit...Mr. Wolfe.  I am in a very good place to be ready for whatever Wed. brings and I'm optimistic it will be good news.

BTW, I have to disagree with whoever says you are only a number at NIH cancer centers. My onc. was one of the 'Ask the Expert" from the 2009 San Antonio symposium, a consummate researcher and internationally respected clinician. He returned my call within 30 mins. when I called re this lump on Monday and had me scheduled for mammo and ultrasound for Wed. morning. All of my docs (cancer and gastroenterologists) are available, attentive and highly competent....capable of giving undivided and compassionate attention and get things done. So much depends on the doctor no matter where you get treatment...some NIH centers really strive for individualized care and a holistic approach as well as a reputation for research and successful tx.

Thinking of all of you today....Molly

Hey Molly, I'm hoping all goes well for you.  It's so horrible to have to worry about everything once we get this diagnosis.  I'm so glad for you that you have that safe comforting place you grew up in to bring you peace.

    Wishing you the best.

Since my childhood home is long gone I'm trying to create that space with my house for my kids and grandkids.  I want them to be excited to go to granny's.  Not real big but have some wonderful forestland just two houses away...

Keep checkin' every now and then. but I imagine you don't know anything yet either.

No matter which happens, let's get together for a libation at my favorite pub. If it's bad news we will commiserate, and if it's good news we will celebrate.

Thanks for all the b'day and biopsy support, gals.  I'm officially one year older today with no  news :)

The radiologist and resident had a lot of trouble keeping the tiny lump (8mm) in view on the ultrasound to get the core samples. It seems surrounding cysts kept hiding it...I thought cysts diminished with menopause?? but they said I have a multitude in the area. They kept adjusting the needle and seemed mystified at times...then said "there's another one".  I questioned what they were seeing and the radiologist said "it is a second one about the same size and both seem to be part of the same process".....    She said she believes they got good samples and promised to call Friday if results are back, even if it is in the evening.  Otherwise, it'll be Monday.

I'm a little more worried now. They began by looking at the ultrasound pics and saying they thought it would be fine.  As it wore on, I sensed  everything looked and proceded a little differently than expected.  Part of my apprehension is PTSD (another surprise yesterday) from the 1st biopsy...you know, the one that changed my world. I don't have enough experience with these "scares" to keep everything in perspective...I'm happy to stay in the moment and not perseverate about information I don't have.

Weesa...I'll jump at an opportunity to meet and libate at the pub.  Driving up on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. yesterday the leaves were stunning with the evening light playing through them. What an incredible place to live, ice storms and all :).

I name each of you and send blessings and gratitude when I read your posts on this board. Will keep you posted as I know more and ask that you continue the day with fingers crossed  :).

Just got call for biopsy results:  Benign!  Radiologist said I have a dense fibrocystic area and believes the hard BB-lumps signal inflamation.  I will be rechecked in March with mammos and ultrasound.

Tonight, we celebrate my b'day and now this good news with my brother and friends at a great little French restaurant downtown. My brother just copied an email he wrote for his workplace regarding support and advocacy for breast cancer survivors and a cure: "My life has been touched by breast cancer since my youngest sister began battling this disease. It affects our wives, mothers, sisters, daughters and friends. We must all be on board to fight this disease and find a cure". What a day to read his email and then receive the good news from Duke!

Tomorrow, I'm  looking forward to attending the LEAF arts festival to hear Indigo Girls, Leon Redbone and stories around the bonfires, see a poetry slam and Contra dancing and eat lots of interesting combinations of local food and drink.

Hope your Fall weekend is beautiful and healing.  I am sending positive...and happy...energy to members of this site.

    Xx, Molly
