Had a double masectomy with TE and all went really well, and was told freeze test on nodes was good. .Thrilled the drains were out at day 6   Got the call I did not want today -

I was originally diagnosed with DCIS in four areas and chose a double.

The path report from surgery shows Grade 1, 1.2mm

Number of positive lymph nodes is 0/4 - - i think this is good

Final diagnosis is T1 NA0 -

WHat type of treatment will I need?  Most likely a few weeks till I can see the oncologosit.

Will I need chemo?  How long will it delay my reconstruction, I can not handle any more bad news.  This is just too much.

Notsure - do you know if your ER/PR or HER2 status???  That can make a difference in your treatment options.

ps  I sent you a private message several weeks ago regarding your recon concerns...just click on the [Private Messages] tab next to the [Favorites] tab

Do you know your hormone and HER2 status? Your next steps will be influenced by what those are; but at Stage 1, grade 1, and no nodes, you have a very good prognosis.

I had a similar situation.  My original diagnosis was DCIS, but I found out after the mastectomy (single) that I had 2 small (1.5mm) foci of IDC, changing my stage to 1A.  I already knew I was ER+/PR+ and they tested the HER2, which was negative.  In my case, they said that since I had already had a mastectomy with clear nodes I would just need to stick with the original plan to go on Tamoxifen.  You might want to find out if they would do an Oncotype test on that small of a sample (I didn't for a long, complicated reason, but wish that I had asked).

    I'm stage 1 grade 1.

I'm ER+, PR+. They treat that with a pill you take each day.

Her2 status is important to know. If that is positive you will need a drug called herceptin, given at the oncologists office. That will also put the option of chemo on the table....

If you are ER+, PR+, and Her2 negative, your chances of having to do chemo are slim to none.

Also, important to note. Stage 1, Grade 1, is a blessing (I know that sounds odd) if you have an invasive cancer. Stage 1 is the earliest stage an invasive cancer can be. Grade 1 is the slowest growing, least aggressive type that an invasive cancer can be. The prognosis for early stage is very good. Hang in there!

I agree with the other posts.  You have "good" news so far.  Knowing your ER, PR & HER2 status is essential before making any treatment decisions.

If you are ER+ (& HER2- as well, I think), you also have the option of taking an Oncotype DX test.  This test will give you an indication of the statistical likelihood of a recurrence based on the pathology of the tumor.  People often opt out of chemo if they get a low oncotype score.

    Hang in there!
